Watching this in theaters in 1977 was literally a life changing experience. There was NOTHING like this before, it was well beyond any movie FX up to that time. The costumes, world building, sound design, all of it was orders of magnitude better that anything that had come before. When we bought the tickets, we thought we were going to see just another cheezy throw away summer space movie like all the rest of them. All was uneventful until the first notes of the theme music hit, from that point on, we were glued to the screen completely mesmerized by what we saw. I wish I could express in words how impactful this was, when we left the theater, we were never the same again.

@@pilarslittlestudio They had one year to create the special effects, but they spent half of that time constructing the groundbreaking equipment necessary from scratch. Cameras, special booms, computers (no handy dandy microprocessors back then), everything was built from the ground up. So, six months with nothing to show for it. There are two good documentaries if you are interested: "Empire of Dreams" which focuses on the Star Wars franchise, and a 6-part TV series called "Light & Magic" which focuses on the creation of Industrial Light & Magic. I love the fact that you give so much credit to the music. John Williams' score is perfect. Drawing from the opera tradition of 'leitmotif', each character has their own theme and every story/situation has appropriate orchestration... When people saw this in 1977 they never saw anything like it before. EVER. Even the music was something new. The special effects were like nothing anyone saw before. Most science fiction movies had spaceships dangling on strings. This was the first time where the ships were flying around and the camera was moving as well. It was AMAZING! People would wait for hours in line to watch this movie, then they would go out and get right back into line to see it again. The lines would go around city blocks and so was born the word: blockbuster. This movie literally changed the world. The world was stuck in the drab, gloomy and depressing 70s and then this movie came out and with it came the optimism of the 80s. I cannot begin to explain how big this movie was. It changed the film industry forever.

I was 14 when this movie released. Saw it with my family and we were all blown away. It is impossible to describe the impact of the visuals showing action and scenes literally like nothing ever seen on any screen (TV or theater). I can vividly remember the awed silence from the packed theater audience when Darth Vader's ship appeared in the opening sequence. The underside filled the huge screen entirely and went on for what felt like ages, the scene incredibly realistic as if an actual Star Destroyer was flying through the theater!! Every moment thereafter was a revelation in storytelling, characters, and above all the ground-breaking special effects. All these many years later, the emotions are crystal clear, which reveals how deep the impact. Then, three years later, I stood in line for an hour on the opening weekend of The Empire Strikes Back. That too was a first (waiting in line for a special premiere movie). The creation of EVENT movies and all the fun of hanging out with fellow enthusiasts (some in costume) began with Star Wars. Sadly, with theaters closing and very few, if any, truly epic movie series being produced, the current generation is tragically missing out, but that is another topic. Industrial Light & Magic originated with George Lucas and Star Wars. In an instant the entire film industry shifted. Bottom line, which cannot be overstated, is that Star Wars, and of course George Lucas, are rightfully credited with a host of trend-setting firsts.

I was just out of college when the movie came out. We didn't know much at all about the movie, but it was causing a sensation right from the beginning. I remember standing on line outside a theater on Long Island waiting for the next showing. One of the ushers walked the line and kept telling us, "The music! You're going to love the music!" Yeah, he was so right. Star Wars owes a debt to an old film called The Hidden Fortress by Akira Kurosawa. It involves a feisty princess being protected by an old warrior, and two arguing villagers along for the ride. The villagers became R2-D2 and C-3PO. The final battle was heavily influenced by a WWII movie called Dam Busters. And the whole thing took a lot of its look from Flash Gordon and other movie serials from the 1930s, including all those visual transitions. There's a whole movie history lesson in there.

So, I'm old enough that I actually saw Star Wars in theaters when it first came out. I was ten...and I don't think at the time I could even accurately tell you the plot of the movie. All I knew was it was the best thing I had ever seen. It helps when you realize there had been NOTHING like this on a movie screen before. Also, coming out of the late 1960's and early 1970's, the overall tone of a lot of movies was quite cynical and serious (a lot of serious stuff was happening in the world), but Star Wars made movies fun again! I will never forget those opening few moments - first the 20th Century Fox fanfare, then silence and in small letters "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...", then...THE STAR WARS title and the MUSIC!! Followed by the giant text scroll, and not just scrolling vertically up the screen but actually fading back into space. Sitting in a theater looking up at those letters, it was overwhelming already...And then seeing the rebel space ship fleeing - but fleeing from what? And then the MASSIVE Empire ship in pursuit - so massive that it took up the entire top half of the movie screen. Masterful and unforgettable. I remember people in the theater actually cheering at the end when Han Solo returns to take out Darth Vader - I mean actually cheering like we were at a ball game. And I think the decision to use a full orchestral score was the icing on the cake. I cannot imagine it would be anywhere close to the same movie without John Williams... Ah...good times...

You asked what this was like. Before 1977 we didn't have movies like this. Ever. Movies with spaceships usually looked like a toy hanging on a string. Blasters, lasers, lightsabers? There was no technology to make them look good on the screen so they were almost never done. We also didn't have things like video games today, so we didn't have computer graphics to see all this stuff at home. George Lucas showed the whole world how to make amazing movies, movies so visually stunning that nobody had ever even thought it was possible until he did it. And I was there to see it. I was 10 when I saw this in the theater and nothing was ever the same for me, regarding movies anyway.

You have no idea how this movie changed absolutely EVERYTHING in movies and pop culture in 1977. It was like a sci-fi tsunami. Never before had an entire space-based universe been created for the public's entertainment. The special effects were positively mind-blowing at the time, far beyond anything that had come before. In fact, the special effects were so good, that they inspired one of the very first "Star Wars" parodies, called "Hardware Wars", which was probably the ultimate low-budget parody film of all time. It took the hi-tech ideal of special effects and reduced it to the cheapest (and funniest) interpretation of the original movie. The space ships were played by steam irons, egg beaters and tape recorders. The alien cantina on Tatooine was played by a real-life country & western bar in California. The Imperial stormtroopers were played by steam cleaners. The cast consisted of Fluke Starbucker, Auggie "Ben" Doggie, Princess Anne-Droid, Ham Salad, Chewchilla the Wookie Monster, Darph Nader, 4-Q2 (C-3PO) and Artie Deco (R2-D2), played by a vacuum cleaner. The film is still one of George Lucas' favorite "Star Wars" parodies. I highly recommend it.

It was jaw-dropping from the opening scene it was eyes wide Open what the hell is happening. Can't answer your question no. Nobody had ever seen anything like this before. The special effects the spaceships the lasers all of it was insane especially to a 10 year old. So the next day my cousin and I stood in line for another 6 hours to watch it again. So, welcome to the universe it's an amazing ride. I will give you no spoilers, but I will give you the order of watch. Episode 456, and episodes 1 2 3, then rogue one, you then solo. After solo you need to watch the animated series clone wars, which will fill in gaps and storyline which happened between episode two and three. Then Star wars rebels. After that the Disney series mandalorian. Then the book of boba Fett, then the series Obi-Wan. There's a few more series in there like the bad batch which is a spin-off of clone wars / rebels it's a sidewatch. As well as Andor and others but stick to the original list again welcome to the universe. It's a long and wonderful ride can't wait to go on the journey with you and watch you learn. ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦

There was never a movie with this level of special effects. Lucas had to invent many of the effects at Skywalker Ranch. Hollywood studios refused to make this movie, so George Lucas had to make it independently. Many people assumed it was going to be a flop, but turned out to be a huge success. We were all amazed by the special effects. One thing to note is that some of the special effects in the version you watched were updated in the late 1990's when George Lucas rereleased the orginal trilogy in the run-up to the release of the prequel trilogy. Some of it is nothing more than compositing the scenes again in a digital compositing suite, but there are also several scenes where the original effects where updated with CGI. George also added removed scenes (for instance Han's meeting with Jabba the Hutt, who in the original footage was played by a human, but in this version is replaced with a CGI version of Jabba as he appeared in a later movie) and extended other scenes. One of the most controversial decisions he made was that in the 1997 version he changed the Han and Greedo shoot-out. In the original version it looked like Han shot first, which George regretted, so in the 1997 version he had Greedo shoot first to make it seem that Han is just responding instead of taking the initiative. This lead to a storm of protest by fans, so for the BluRay release he changed the scene again so that it looks like the shoot at the same time.

i love how you're recognizing Star Wars influence on other things, like Avatar, etc... It makes me tense up just a little when I hear people say "This star wars scene reminds of some NEWER movie/show/character/scene. My immediate reaction is....'No, the new movie got it FROM Star Wars, not the other way around. Star Wars came out nearly half a century ago.'"

Saying this movie was huge in 1977 is an understatement. George Lucas and his vision launched SFX we know today. It also started Skywalker Ranch, the creative start to things like Dolby Digital and THX sound. Many movies, games and tv shows owe their start and success to Star Wars.

31:52 Thank you for sharing the information on your brother's nick name. Lucas named R2D2 because he was having a correspondence with one of his film team that they abbreviated Reel 2 Disk 2 as R2D2, and Lucas thought it sounded like a droid name.

I love your reaction! I can’t wait to see your reactions to the next movies. I would like to point out something. Regarding Leia’s kisses and hugs. Back then, perhaps more than nowadays, platonic friends would kiss each other on the cheek, or hug each other. So, Luke, or Han? You’ll just have to wait and see.

My mother was 50 when she made me discover SW at barely 8 yo. Oh and you can also be bullied at school for liking SW as well as I was. No pressure and enjoy the ride. C3PO actor is British and he plays the protocol droid just as he would play a British butler. So fitting, precious and pedantic. Some other actord are British, Peter Cushing as Tarkin and Alec Guinness as Obi Wan. Carrie Fisher tries to take her best British accent but she was American. Lord and Darth are synonimus, Darth meaning Lord in Sith language. Obi Wan as a Jedi (warrior monk, a mix of Templar and Samuraï in space) never owned R2-D2. he owns nothing apart from his clothes and his lightsaber. Hand and Leia flirting is so natural because the two actors were having some action behind close doors... R2 is an astromech droid, their goal is to repair and maintain ships in flight and can help the pilot in navigation as well. Leia's home planet was destroyed you saw it be pulverized. The Rebel base is on Yavin IV. The SFX tou see here were reworked with CGI in the late 90s, twenty years after the movie came out but the original ones were already astonishing for the day. R2 must be one of the favorite characters to many people.

It is no wonder that you enjoyed the music of this movie. With 25 Oscars and numerous other awards, John Williams is without a doubt the greatest composer in film history. He did the music for almost all of Steven Spielberg and John Lucas's films. The music of this movie won him one of his Best Score Acadamy Awards and has been selected by the American Film Institute as the greatest film score of all time. As you go about reacting to all of these movies, many of the best movies have scores by John Williams.

Although you caught early that the plans could be stored on R2D2, back then the general public wasn’t used to the concept of storing data on a machine. Even that detail gave it a technological/futuristic feel.

The film you watched was enhanced from the 1977 version i watched in the theaters but yes, it was jaw dropping in 1977. Truly revolutionary not just in effects but the story telling. George Lucas created the space fantasy genre. There's actually some great documentaries on the making of Star Wars. The challanges they went through were incredible. It's actually amazing it came together the way it did. Glad you love it like our generation did/does!

I was 6 when this was first released. I don't specifically recall thinking about flying cars but for sure thought about and discussed with others about the tech of the future after seeing the movie. In particular, I recall wondering about stuff like the hologram message that Leia recorded and put in R2D2. I recall me and my friends thinking that was cool and were optimistic about it becoming a reality. Then again, we were 6 so what did we know. But the film definitely sparked talking about things of the future - both kids and adults alike. I mean at the time if we had been asked about the tech of 2023 back in 1977 that would be 46 years in the future so a lot could happen in that time frame. I'm sure we would have come up with some wild stuff. I'm sure the same could have been said if people in 1931 had been asked about tech in 1977 (46 years later) the same would have been true. You asked somewhere in there when Obi-Wan was sneaking around the Death Star what he was doing. They couldn't escape in their ship because the station's shields were up - preventing their ship from leaving. So Obi-Wan went to the place where he could access the controls for the shields and lowered them - hence allowing the others to get in the ship and fly away. You mentioned the other films such as the sequels and the prequels. You may want to ponder some on what order you want to undertake the Star Wars journey. There are many differing opinions on the order in which to watch the films for the first time. Some watch in chronological order (prequels then originals then sequels), some watch in release order (original trilogy then prequel trilogy then sequels), and some do machete order which is Episode 4 and 5 of the original trilogy then the prequels (Episodes 1-3) and then back to Episode 6 of the original trilogy and then the sequels. I myself am biased towards release order because like I said I was 6 in 1977 when the first one was released and have seen every film since in the theater as it came out. So with release order you kind of get the experience of how they were first presented to the audience. But you can do another order for sure. The thing that it will change is which spoiler type things you learn first - so the order of information reveals. My only other thought to add would be that probably doing the originals and prequels (in whatever order) first before the sequels may be useful in understanding the sequels better since some foundation information is spread out over those two trilogies. Just going into the sequels with only the originals under your belt might make it a bit rougher. But, really, you'll see them all eventually anyway and you can always rewatch in a different order later. Just might be something to consider before continuing.

Hey Pilar, Star Wars producers used sound stages in the UK and hired numerous actors that were based in England. Chief among them are Sir Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin). Guinness is one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema, winning a Best Actor Academy Award for The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Yeah, like I've read years ago, it's almost like 20th Century Fox fanfare preludes to Star Wars main theme. I saw Avatar at movie theater and for example the 3D was indeed impressive; for example a scene with those "mechs" running, and the dust they were kicking backwards seemed to go towards the audience. What a blast it would've been to see also this one in cinema.

A Padawan is boarding the "Tantive IV." What will this modern viewer think about this "old, long, slow-moving, character-centered, jargon-filled, no-DFX" movie? 5:56 Welcome to Tatooine, did you bring you own water? 6:51 A Jawa collecting scrap metal. 7:33 You are watching the George Lucre version, with DFX not seen in 1977. Those are Imperial Storm Troopers riding Dewbacks. 9:57 In 1977, I got a "Is this all there to Life? Stuck on Tatooine for another season" vibe. Flying cars, like Nuclear Fusion, has been a pipe dream for decades, and just as likely. 10:42 A Bantha, being ridden by a Sand Person. 11:22 A Krayt Dragon call. 14:09 Dark Side Choke. 14:39 Imperial Storm Trooper interrogations can be...ruthless. 15:41 Jedi Mind Trick. "Chewbilly"? 17:00 Don't mess with a Jedi. 18:41 Going to Light Speed, captivating audiences since 1977.

I saw the film in '77, back when it was just _'Star Wars'_ prior to addind the "Episode IV" to the title. Flying cars have been predicted since the 1960s, if not earlier, and my friends and I certainly had high hopes that we'd at least have levitating, if not fully flying, cars for everyone by the year 2000. After all, hovercraft were already real, although rare and somewhat specialized.
