One thing I love about this movie is Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan. Even though the prequel trilogy was still just a thought in Lucas’s mind, Guinness’s amazing acting makes you feel so much history behind his words. I know you love the prequel trilogy most, especially episode 3. But this movie and empire are my two favorites. I love the characters, the story, while campy in parts, is still quite serious and tense, and the special effects hold up pretty well. When the OT was re-released for the special edition in 1997, a lot of new special effects and scenes were added in, especially in this movie . That scene with Jabba was originally filmed with a man on screen, and they overlaid a CGI version of Jabba over him. They ran into an issue where Han walked around behind him, so they edited him walking on his tail to solve this issue. Even Boba Fett was also added in digitally as his character didn't even exist in 1977. Also Han shot first in the original version, not greedo. Even Obi Wan's scream to scare away the sand people was also changed. I highly recommend checking out the unaltered 1977 version if you can. There is also a Disney special on the making of star wars called Empire of Dreams, you should react to it!!!!

Its hard to put into words how important and groundbreaking this film is. Literally nothing like it existed when it came out. Sure, it was inspired by existing Stuff (1930s SciFi-Serials, Samurai Movies and so forth) but these elements were combined into something completely new, changing cinema landscape forever. This is, in essence, the first true Blockbuster as well as the Movie that started Franchises as we know them. In a Roundabout way, there wouldn't be an MCU without Star Wars and the Film Series it started. Its also amazing how well this movie has aged. Yeah, I know, the version you saw is not 100% the Version which amazed Cinemagoers 45 Years ago: Since the Special Edition-rerelease in 1997, this and its two Sequels have been tinkered with, adding new/previously cut Scenes here and some CGI there (although 90% of the Effects you see were done completely without Computers but with Models, Stop Motion, Motion Control, Matte Paintings and so forth. The Display we see during the Briefing before the Final Battle was about the extent of what was possible CGI-wise in '77). But I'm not only referring to the Effects, but to the timeless Production Design, the Sound Effects, the Classic Music by John Williams, the Camerawork and the editing. But what I *especially* like is how Lucas practically created a perfect narrative snowball which gathers Characters like lint - two fugitive robots run into a dead-end farmboy and are found by an aging general who leads them to a mercenary who takes them to a princess who gets them sucked into an entire resistance movement. And the stakes escalate relentlessly: Luke sets out one morning to find a runaway robot; seemingly by day's end, he's blowing up a space station that destroys entire planets. There is never a dull moment in this movie, it remains interesting and intriguing and plain fun from start to end and is absolutely perfectly paced. "The Empire Strikes back" is technically the better movie, but "A New Hope" is more fun and more rewatchable. --- As a sidenote, Tarkin might actually be one of my favourite Star Wars-Villains... or Villains in general. He is no physical threat, he has no force powers, he's just an experienced, absolutely ruthless monster in human form, hidden behind a thin Aristrocratic Facade of good manners and a sophisticated Accent. He committed the biggest Genocide in SW-History by having Alderaan blown up and probably slept soundly afterwards. Peter Cushing (veteran of many British Horror-Films from the 50s to the 70s) died in 1994 and so portayed the Character only in this initial appearance, but I like how every time the Character showed up in later productions, they tried to stick as closely as possible to his gaunt appearance, his Voice, way of speaking and his characteristic Accent, in a way honoring Cushings legacy. Christopher Lee, who played Dooku in the Prequels, was a close friend of Cushing and considered his own role a sort of tribute to his late friend.

There is comic book series based on the og trilogy, that is centered around what if something happened differently. And for New Hope it is what would have happened if Luke did not destroy the death star. The comic book series is called Star Wars Infinities. Also the imperial in white with the mustache in the conference room is Yularen from the Clone Wars and Rebels. I do hope he eventually rewatches Rogue One. Mostly for the Star Wars Rebels references, like Chopper showing up in a scene. I guess it would be good for him to watch it again after he watches Andor S1.

Some Clone Wars/Rebels connections: The Y-Wings used in the Battle of Yavin were stolen in the Rebels S3 premiere. The other surviving X-Wing pilot (apart from Luke) was Wedge Antilles, the TIE pilot-in-training Sabine rescued in the middle of Season 3. His friend, Hobbie, appears in Episode V, and Antilles appears in both Episodes V and VI. One of the attendees of the conference on the Death Star is ISB Colonel Yularen, who was the commander of Anakin's Star Destroyer in Clone Wars. He appears as part of ISB in the episode where the Rebels attempt to extract Agent Kallus. You'll see him again in Andor. Speaking of the conference room scene, there's an empty seat for Director Krennic from Rogue One. C-3PO claims he knows how to speak to binary load lifters, the kind of droid that went on a destructive rampage in the first Martez Sisters episode. When Leia claims Kenobi served Bail in the Clone Wars, it isn't just a vague reference to the Jedi fighting for the Senate during the Clone Wars; the first chronological episode of TCW, S2E16, actually shows this.

Honestly, I think of this is as close to perfection a movie can get to. Just knowing the behind-the-scenes, with nobody believing in Lucas, he constructs one of the most influential and successful franchises of all time, with expert direction, music, editing, sound, and effects, as well as his eye for iconoclasm. It is honestly just a pure distillation of what makes movies great in general, and is in my opinion the best star wars movie. It somewhat saddens me when young people disregard the film just because it's almost 50 years old, and instead try to prop it up with the rest of the saga and its newer films. Star Wars stands on its own.
@Bounsingonbongos1 Жыл бұрын
Regarding the sound quality of the 20th century fox logo at the start: Lucas used an intentionally old version of the logo and music (I believe from a Marilyn Monroe movie) as it was intended to invoke nostalgia for golden age Holywood, but would also contrast with William's crisp score.

That lightsaber fight hits a lot different when you're emotionally invested with those two guys. It feels a lot more significant. It's true that they didn't do sword fights the same way back then, partly because of the limitations of the special effects technology they used, and partially because you didn't see all that jumping and flipping outside of Hong Kong kung fu movies and Japanese ronin pictures in the 1970s. But more than that, Obi-Wan and Anakin have both gotten a lot older, especially Obi-Wan, and living out in that desert definitely aged him. Vader obviously wasn't going all out against him, and felt overconfident without the need to impress. He certainly wasn't a defeated wretch like when Maul encountered Obi-Wan in Rebels. Vader went in thinking it was going to be an execution, and that's pretty much what it was. As far as Top Gun Maverick was concerned, you better believe those similarities were intentional. I think the philosophy they took with the ending of that movie was, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't think it detracted from enjoying the movie either, it's just a little funny, since George Lucas also borrowed heavily from previous movies and film serials from when he was a kid, and he previsualized the fighter plane battle at the end of Star Wars by literally cutting together bits and pieces from old war movies.

@Gabriel_Cook Жыл бұрын
I was going to mention this. Anyway, I'll elaborate somewhat There were 3 Infinities comics one for each of the original trilogy films. The was also a comic series (actually more of an anthology) called Star Wars: Tales which was under the Infinities Banner which set them all apart from the Expanded Universe which is now designated as Legends. This was all before Disney purchased LucasFilm when the Expanded Universe (Legends) were pretty much considered Canon by many, though with different levels of how Canon from one story compared to another. Disney erased all of this content which is a driving force when it comes to irrational hatred for Disney Star Wars.

As I’m watching this and you mention porkins, it reminds me of the fact the same actor played a character named Major Eaton in Indian Jones

Both Star Wars and Harry Potter follow the heroes journey. That’s why they seem so much alike. That’s pretty much where the similarities end.
George Lucas jokingly said there wasn't supposed to to be a "P" in the title.😂😂😂

Remember that tentacled creature that grabbed Wrecker and pulled him underwater in Bad Batch Ep7? That was a Dianoga, same as the creature in the trash compactor in this movie! Now you gotta watch this one again to catch some of the prequel/Clone Wars/Rebels/Rogue One stuff you seem to have missed this time, like Yularen at the conference on the Death Star, and did you recognize the pair of Duros in the flight suits in the Mos Eisley cantina? It's the first appearance of Bane's race. But don't watch it again till you watch Kenobi and Andor. So great to take this ride with you, Primate!

Duros are genetically related to Niemodians, the Trade Federation mofos.

' he was the best star pilot in the galaxy and a cunning warrior. And he was a good friend...' That line hits so hard after seeing the prequels and clone wars. Everything that came after was kind of based on this conversation in Ben's Hut I'm looking forward to you checking out. Obi-Wan. It is flawed in execution, but the story is good. Kind of like the prequels in my opinion

14:50 he called him that because initially, Jabba was just a fat dude, George changed him to a Hutt later

All the Alec Guinness scenes hit much harder after having watched the prequels and Clone Wars. You'll find that for all of the original trilogy.

almost everyy single person i ask about a new hope says the same thing. first time i saw it or when i was younger, found it boring it was ok but when you rewatch it when your older or for a 2nd 3rd time you realize man, this movie actually was heat, i like it a lot. So no surprise primate said that.

The top gun maverick similarities I'm pretty sure are just a coincidence. On TGM they asked actual military mission planners to come up with a mission that gave them a real excuse that they would have to use fighter pilots instead of drones along with other things.

This movie still has such a magical feeling, but I can't believe you just talked through the entire binary sunset scene (probably my favorite scene in any movie, ever), haha. Anyway, as others have said - there are definitely a lot of cool things in Kenobi that will add even more flavor to this movie. There are a few things I was disappointed by but it also had some great moments/additions to the lore. (I feel the same way about BoBF which I actually thought was a lot of fun). RotS and ESB are tied as my favorites, but RotJ really is great too and I think sometimes I underrate it. The end always makes me really emotional and I suppose I'm at a point in my life where I value that as much as something dark/intense. Speaking of big screen stuff - if you ever get a chance to see a 'Star Wars In Concert' performance at a nearby symphony absolutely do it. They play the movie on a big screen and have a live orchestra playing the entire soundtrack and it's just an incredible experience. The atmosphere is usually a little more casual so people will be cheering/clapping (as a music nerd that kind of bugs me at times, but it's fun) and it's a really cool way to get the big screen experience. Just don't talk through binary sunset (I flat out cried when I saw it performed and the entire theater was stone silent for that part). ;)

Kenobi is pretty good. It could have been condensed some but it has some great moments.
