To be fair, it was more that movies didn't bother with sci fi like this. For all the hype, it isn't as "original" as people sometimes think. Huge amounts of the story was flat out copied from a few different films from the past, and many of the sci fi elements already existed in British and US sci fi tv shows long before Star Wars. There is no denying it's impact, but there was plenty like it before in almost every department.

You asked how long it took for Lucas to develop the Universe, it's actually a really interesting story. I grew up in George Lucas' hometown (Modesto, Ca) and was introduced to Star Wars by my uncle in the early 90's. I fell in love with the story and the characters and became obsessed with Lucas and read/watched every interview and book. Lucas was really into racing when he was younger and ended up getting into a bad car wreck. He began writing what would become Star Wars while he was recovering, using his love of Japanese cinema, pulp adventure novels and sci-fi to build the world. I highly recommend looking into some of the interviews he's done.

The reason Leia is so sassy towards Han while they're on the Death Star is that she's a high ranking member of the Rebel Alliance. She was expecting a legit military operation rescue, not space cowboy with his "dog" and some farm boy in an old RV.

I agree. The genius of George Lucas changed Hollywood movie-making forever with Star Wars. The extensive use of blue screens and models at the time... there was NOTHING even close to these special effects... plus the sound... plus the music... the casting... etc. Spielberg and Cameron and others owe their success to the innovations/ingenuity of Lucas. Lucas did this on a "shoestring" budget (compared to other later blockbuster special-effect movies) with a lot of college students to help him. If I remember right, it was classified as a "B" movie. And the Star Wars franchise IS the biggest there is... and still keeps growing. :-)

One of the reasons that James Earl Jones voiced Darth Vader, was that they realised there were no visible black actors in the film. There were lots of black actors there, but they were all in costumes as stormtroopers or aliens. ( Lando is the first black character you see on screen) So they hired James Earl Jones, who had such a distinctive voice, and as he voiced Vader, a powerful, ruthless, leader. The fans loved it.

What I and a lot of my friends used to say, watching Star Wars never felt like watching films. It felt more like watching historical documents. They feel so real and genuine. Those first opening minutes with the text crawling across the screen, and the immediate explosion of action with this giant starship zooming overhead, the combination of the bombastic music, the novel sound design, and the practical effects, nobody had ever seen anything like it in 1977. It blew people away. The space genre was much more sedate and "serious" for the most part. Then these space cowboys exploded onto the screen in a flurry of blaster fire and grand orchestral music and changed everything.

You should put this in context, she's a newbie. In the scene where Han kills the green alien (Greedo) in the cantina the original release of the movie in 1977 Greedo never shot, Han just straight up killed him. In the "Special Edition" release in the 90's where the movies were remastered they put a lot of special effects in. and when doing that they added a laser blast hitting above Han's head from Greedo firing first. It's pretty annoying and it changes Han's character, it's not just a visual thing. I'm sure there's a video out there that will show the differences between the original and the "Special Edition" version of the original trilogy, but I wouldn't recommend watching it until you've finished the first trilogy.
