That was some damn fine acting from Mark Hamill once Vader dropped "I am your father" line. Luke knew the moment Vader said it that it was true, but it's so horrible he doesn't want to believe it. Hamill's facial expressions really drive all of that home. Luke indeed *knows* it to be true.

The kid got some stick at the time, but I always thought he did well with a very difficult role, so central to the first trilogy. Unconvincing backstory (possibly intentionally), clunky lines, weird relationship with Leia, strange mixture of all-knowing superhero and naive teen. Hamill found it difficult to get work afterwards, he was too famous. He didn't get "Amadeus" because Milos Forman didn't want Luke Skywalker playing Mozart.

Well, they both had just been told extremely shocking and life changing news about their families. Vader learning the family he tried so hard to save with Padme was lost because of himself, and Luke's mental image of his father as a heroic jedi betrayed by the ultimate evil being shattered when he learns that the monster he's fought for so long actually IS his father. Both are pretty fair reactions.

For those who have not experienced this the first time or already knew that Vader is Luke's father, this plot twist is really significant for Luke's character development because up to this point, Luke believed that Vader killed his father, and after he killed Obi-Wan as well, he was hell-bent on killing Vader. However, now that Vader is revealed as his father, there's now a sudden conflict within him. He's now torn between killing his father and avenge Obi-Wan, or saving him and return him to the Light, which is considered impossible by everyone, including Vader himself. His inital hatred later turns into pity by the end of the movie, and he eventually made a resolve to save his father. This scene also humbles and matures him, and made him into the gigachad we knew and love in Return of the Jedi.
