There were actually fairly minimal changes to Empire Strikes Back. The only really notable difference is the replacement of the Emperor with the actor who plays him in all the other films.

They also changed the editing at the end in the Blu-ray release with pointless shots of Vader travelling back to the Star Destroyer. Completely messes up the flow and the operatic John Williams ending (kind of like ET). You can't change that editing without messing up the score.

That wouldn't make much sense. Torture weakens an organism, after all, and lessens the chances of survival. And I think that Lando voiced his concerns on Luke possibly not surviving the freezing process after that. Plus, they either waited for Han to recover, or tossed him in a bacta tank before freezing him, as he could walk on his own again.

Rana's reaction to the "I know" line is funny, but she has to remember that it's perfect because throughout the movie up to that point, Leia had been the one who was denying her feelings, while Han was the one who was putting it all out there. In essence, Leia already knew Han loved her, but she didn't know if he knew she loved him.

I wouldn't call it perfect, but hey to each their own. Personally I've never really liked Han Solo or characters like him. Always find them annoying, arrogant and just far to in to them selves. I guess the line where confidence become arrogance is lower for me then people in general xD. Oddly enough I like Indiana Jones... maybe Harrison Ford played that character to be less serious and more goofy.

Hello There It totally was. I was 9 when I 1st saw Star Wars in the theatre & 12 the summer this came out. Our minds were pretty blown. But, you have to remember VCRs were just coming out around 80, my family didn’t get one til ‘83 or ‘84, so you’d see the movie & that was it. There were no ‘movie nights’ to watch the films & talk about them. And, while we’d play ‘Star Wars,’ there wasn’t constant news about the movies, so eventually you’d kind of forget about it until around the coming of summer break in ‘83, when we would hear Return of the Jedi was coming out & then we’d get all excited again. When my dad bought our 1st VCR, he got Star Wars free with it & I watched that movie pretty much every chance I got for about a year.

I was 11 when Empire came out. SW and then Empire were amazing. If anyone didnt get it their inner child must have been dead. The updated versions had mostly terrible additions. Han and Chewy chasing a few stormtroopers in New Hope to a dead end "cornering an animal" so to speak making them turn to fight made so much sense, thoughtfully psychological. Changing it to them running into a barracks was completely unnecessary, a change that diminished the feel of that chace scene.

Born in 1986 so I missed all 3 in theaters, but grew up in the mid 90's when there were only these 3 Star Wars movies. Everyone knew they were special, there was a mystique about them even all those years later. My dad used to sneak me out to the living room after my mom went to bed and let me watch them... they left a lifelong impression on me. When the Prequels eventually came out they were supposed to be "my generation's Star Wars" and, while I definitely like them, they just didn't seem like they matched up with the Originals. Now... the Sequels on the other hand... they completely devastated my dad and pissed off every one of my friends, coworkers and the majority of people I've encountered. The entire audience at my local theater walked out shaking their heads and swearing when the credits rolled on Last Jedi. After some reflection and talking with a lot of people about it, I'm convinced the Sequels were an intentional attempt at dismantling the Originals... too much had been killed off, rendered pointless or outright disrespected. We all went over to a friend's place that night and immediately put Empire Strikes Back on in order to cleanse our souls of what just happened. Thank god for the Originals.

6:55 "He got F&^ked up!" Fact: Mark Hamill was in a serious car accident after filming of A New Hope(first starwars movie) had wrapped up/finished, fracturing his nose and cheek bone. It also left a noticeable scar/and nerve damage in the lip area. Lucas wrote in the Wompa attack to give reason for Mark's/Luke's slightly changed facial expressions. In the third Indiana Jones movie(Last Crusade) we see the reason Indy/Harrison has that scar in the chin area. The movie showed it was his first attempt at using a bullwhip and hitting himself in the face. In real life it was yet another car accident in 1964. There were other reports/rumors over the years of it being a carpentry nailgun backfire.

David Ribeiro He discussed the accident with Gossip Magazine in mid-1978... What happened was that I was on the wrong freeway. I was way out in the sticks somewhere and there were no cars and no traffic, thank God. I was going about 65-70 mph... I was speeding, going too fast... and what happened, I think, was that I tried to negotiate an off-ramp and lost control, tumbled over, and went off the road. I fractured my nose and my cheek. He continued in the interview, though, to mock the rather overly sensationalized coverage of the accident... Yeah! I read in magazines, “Mark Hamill almost killed in auto crash.” And what prose... “As he dragged himself from the wreckage... the flames were higher”... you know?... “his nose slid off his face.” And I’m going, “Wow, this is great! But I don’t remember it!” On the DVD commentary for The Empire Strikes Back, George Lucas specifically denied that the Wampa scene was written to address Hamill’s injuries, noting that the scene had been written some time earlier. While Lucas is correct, I do not know if that evidence is necessarily rock solid proof, since the first draft of The Empire Strikes Back was written by Leigh Brackett in February of 1978, over a year after Hamill’s accident (and roughly a month before Brackett sadly passed away - Brackett’s screenplay, by the way, was later changed dramatically, as we detailed in an old Movie Legends Revealed about how Darth Vader was not yet Luke’s father in her first draft). That said, since Brackett’s first draft was written over a year before filming began on The Empire Strikes Back, I do find it a bit hard to believe that Brackett was writing a scene to address Hamill’s injury when A. Hamill had already done a film since the injury without incident and B. He would not be doing the film for some time, so writing in a scene in 1978 based on what Hamill was going to look like in 1979 seems like a bit of a stretch. www. huffpost. com/ entry/ was-the-wampa-attack-in-e_b_8035468 seanmunger. com/ 2013/ 07/ 18/ faceoff-the-squirrely-legend-of-mark-hamills-car-crash/ He also filmed Corvette Summer in between SW and the SW Holiday Special.

Maybe a controversial opinion but the first special edition of Empire has a lot of improvements in the visuals including the Hoth battle and especially Cloud City, but most importantly replacing that googly eyed version of the Emperor.
@CaesiusX
@CaesiusX 5 жыл бұрын
It has been my experience that your opinion is not terribly controversial. And you can even see it here in the comments. However, I happen to disagree. I think the Cloud City effects look terrible. Yes, the Falcon flying through the city looks really nice, but wasn't needed. It didn't add anything that we didn't already get from existing shots. And when they're running through the city and they superimpose the sky behind them. . .Well, to me it looks dreadful. I wouldn't have minded the change with the Emperor if they hadn't altered the dialogue as well. Adding the Vader scene with the shuttle at the end completely destroys the flow of the moment and the musical cues John Williams had set up so perfectly. But that's just me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There are plenty that like the adjustments to The Empire Strikes Back special editions. I attribut _some_ of that approval to sheer relief. Relief that Lucas didn't get as ridiculous as he had with the other films by putting whatever cgi thing he possibly could in every single frame.

@ColdFire Episode III is decent but it's still riddled with the same issues as all the prequels: Bad acting and terrible terrible dialogue. I mean no SW movie is great at dialogue, but none of them are as bad as the prequels either. It's the best of the prequels for sure at least but it's still nowhere as good as ESB or ANH. And RoTJ being a very good conclusion of the arcs and themes of the trilogy I also consider it superior (although that part isn't Ep III's fault, it's the fault of having two terrible predecessors).

@@cristiansaucedo4707 You're right of course, but my concern is that the OT already gave us some important clues about the events of the prequels and Lucas essentially twisted and screwed those clues so hard when he eventually made the prequels that they have become unrecognizable. E.g. Anakin being a great pilot, good friend, etc. All of that was severely undercut by Lucas' decision to make Anakin a snotnosed little brat. And don't even get me started on the so-called "clone wars"! In George's version the clones were completely incidental to the war, so why would it be called that? The prequels depiction of the Jedi is so inept (to say the least) that they become actively unsympathetic! All of them - Obiwan, Yoda, Mace, etc.- completely contrary to their depiction in the OT they are all self-righteous, dogmatic wankers without any humanism or personality! And that has to be the unforgivable sin of story-telling: making your heroes unlikable and (worse) boring! And making R2 and 3PO eternal parts of those events just makes the whole universe feel so much smaller and less imaginative too. I don't care HOW bad the sequels are, that doesn't make the prequels and Lucas' choices there a single iota better!

empire has hoth the insides of cloud city and dagobah...i think the sets alone are why we remember it so fondly ...its so nice to look actual sets not just cgi...they aren't fighting training rebelling on a green screen they actually built sets to work on which inspires the actors so they aren't just told that they can fix it in post with cgi around their acting

Harrison Ford is in 3 of the best sequels of all-time!! Empire, Last Crusade, BR2049!

Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger are both essentially sequels to Hunt for Red October, and I enjoy all these Jack Ryan stories. Ford knows how to keep a character going strong, despite what the filmmakers might do around him.

Luke looks so different in this movie compared with New Hope because he had been in a car accident and his face got messed up. The injuries that are shown on his face were real and the reconstructive surgery changed the shape of his face. They try to attribute it to the injuries in the opening scenes but he already has them from the start of this movie. The original script for this movie was written by one of the only women pulp fiction writers (Leigh Brackett, who also wrote the script for the Humphrey Bogart movie The Big Sleep). Most people may know other pulp fiction writers (like Edgar Rice Burroughs who wrote the original Tarzan books and Robert E. Howard who wrote the Conan the Barbarian books) but few know Leigh Brackett but I think her books are among the best. I recommend the Skaith books. They are collected into an anthology called The Book of Skaith and are great. The main character (blandly named Eric John Stark) is described as having almost black skin but blond hair and blue eyes (of course the artist who did the cover art made him white, contrary to the actual description in the books). Leigh Brackett deliberately made future racial characteristics completely different from what people expect because she figured in the future they would be completely different from now. An amazing and underappreciated woman.

Imagine being alive in 1980, and seeing that lightsaber leap the extra 10 inches into Luke's hand before there was any sign that was a thing the Force could do. Everyone remembers the twist ending, but think how much that one shot would have blown your mind 15 minutes into the movie before we even knew what Jedi really were.
