It's actually surprising how much the strategy for this game differs from AoE2, despite so much of it being a one-for-one copy. The fact that most units are ranged, that basic troopers don't cost gold (or the gold equivalent), the addition of flying units, the fact that buildings need power to work efficiently, the addition of shields that make defensive positions WAY more durable... I kinda wish I could see it played at a competitive level.

Yea people discredit it when hey say it’s a reskin. There are definitely some balance concerns (jedi are obscenely OP for republic, trade federation has a wood collecting debuff that makes them unambiguously the worst) but man it’s so cool

While definitely not as popular as AoE2, this game used to have a very niche competitive scene. If you're interested in competitive gameplay, I recommend checking out Lucky Llama's channel on KZbin: there are a lot of good commentary and analysis of recorded games.

Now that I'm home I can just info-dump. The color of the laser the unit shoots tells you what it's effective against. Red = Troops Blue = Mechs Green = buildings There are little lights on the buildings that tell you if it's powered or not. Red and blinking is powerless, and green is powered. Any building without power works at 33% efficiency. Fortresses and town centers have built in power cores. Gugans have actual submarines, and can build prefabs under water, and a mobile shield generator. You can use workers to repair each other, unless your Civ doesn't use robots. The wookies have a tech that let all of their troop units regen. There's a cheat to spawn in the death star, it's a quote from when they first see the Death star... The empire has a tech that let their Assault mechs target air.

Man, this sure takes me back. Animal Nurseries spoiled me hard, as food never became an issue lol. I loved the way they implemented different unit types, as well. In regards to modding, Expanded Fronts is relatively well-known to really flesh out this game... and there were a couple other WIP mods I knew about, which was to implement the Yuuzhan Vong and Mon Calamari factions -- I've no idea what became of those, however. May the 4th be with you, in any case, SotL!

I loved Galactic Battlegrounds! What was so awesome about it was that you could create your own battles with your favourite characters. I love to see Galactic Battlegrounds come back with Revenge of the Sith. The Sequel Trilogy. The Clone Wars. Rebels. Rogue One. Solo. The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.

There's the "Expanding Fronts" mod that adds post-RotJ content (New Republic & Imperial Remnants, First Order & Resistence) and gives the Geonosians their own faction so the Confederacy can have more Episode 3 stuff (like say Magna Guards as an unique unit). There's also Black Sun and the Zann Consortium, though I'm not sure where they fit in the timeline again.

Though oftentimes against real players it will be positioned in a way that reaching it will be extremely difficult even with cannons. So sometimes you just gotta muscle through the shield generator since if you can pop it that's sunk ore which is a lot harder to recover than the 200 Carbon to replace a power generator.

Sith Apprencies are not really monks. They are a melee unit. They needed upgrades to unlock conversion, but IIRC the Empire was block from that (being not a Force Heavy faction).

Yeah, almost everything (almost) has a 1-to-1 comparison in AoE2. Troop Center = Infantry (sorta) Mech Factory = Cavalry (sorta) Heavy Weapons = Siege (and good anti-air) Jedi/Sith = Monks (sorta) War Center = Blacksmith Research Center = University Fortress = Castle In this game though, there are some oddball things. Air units, for starters, but Bounty Hunters exist to counter Jedi/Sith, since they can fight and Monks can't. They needed a counter. Almost every troop has direct counters mentioned in their tooltips. Strike mechs destroy infantry, mech destroyers beat other vehicles (mechs and siege), and most of the infantry are specialized like pikemen.

I remember playing this when I was a kid. My cousin had left it at my house and I was already very familiar with aoe2... my dad was a very good player in the days of the conquerors. He played against the hardest AI until he could consistently out-produce them. He liked 1v1s more than team games and changing diplo games cus he always got teamed up on and accused of cheating cus he was so good. Kinda wish he could get back into it now but idk. What I find fascinating about this game is that they have both airships and regular water ships. And that the water cruisers are some of the best artillery in the game. I sank a ton of time into this game with my friends; the expansion adds more factions, and it was always fun training clone troopers as the Republic with them popping out almost as fast as you could click the button.

That game had some very interesting elements like the animal nursery, the power core and most importantly (to me), a unique model of each unit for each factions, a part of me wish that having different graphics for an unit depending of what faction made it was a thing in DE but who know, maybe it will happen in the future with one of those events ? HD had the whole Independent Architecture mods that covered it so it's definitively not impossible to do.

Fun fact about the air units: Your faction choice can make a _real_ difference. All the "good" guys except for the Gungans can research shields for their air units, which gives them a second health bar that regenerates. Tie-Fighters don't stand a chance against X-Wings in equal numbers. The final trooper upgrade (available to most factions) is also really fun because it's not just a numerical upgrade: The Repeater Trooper trades in a few attack points for a _much_ higher rate of fire (since he's toting the blaster equivalent of a machine gun) The bombers would've been overall more useful in this match. The fighters are mainly for use against infantry and other aircraft. The heavy weapons factory also has what is effectively the ram from AoE2 (the "pummel", which basically uses a giant blowtorch), which would've been very useful agains tthe shield generator and fortress.

Ive been waiting for this video for my entire life. Everyone always talks about how they grew up with AOE 2. Not me! I played galactic battlegrounds for years before even learning about what AOE 2 ever was.

seeing you play my childhood game brought me much joy. it also made me realise how similar yet different the two games are. I only played STGB as a kid when i was about 5-10, I thought there was an equivalent of everything in AoE2, I thought power cores were guard outposts or something but nah, they just don't need to worry about it. (all buildings research and build units at reduced efficiency, power ups it to 100%) shields are a thing, not sure how little me tried to rationalise that. flying units... well if the ewoks can do it then the huns can to. about 80% of the units are ranged but in AoE2 its about 30%-40% I thought monks could also convert people.

There's barely any footage of it on YT, especially made in the last few years. I'd love to see a Definitive addition/HD reboot licensed by Disney with elements of new canon and to restore some of the older bits from the campaign: both parts of Ecchu shen jon's arc, the gungun union of bosses,, Vader retrieving the AT-AT prototype, Han helping the wookies take back Kashyyyk , and eventually the Rebels taking back Coruscant.

Pummels are the equivalent to battering rams, and cannons are equivalent to trebuchets. You can carry infantry in the AT-AT (assault mechs). There's an expansion that adds the Clone Wars era, the CIS and Republic.

This whole video was so good. The plot twist half way through, the death star ending and Spirit telling me it's said "AT-AT" not an "A-T A-T" only to not say AT-SSSSSST and calling the AT-ST a chicken walker instead.

Actually air is not really that powerful, its very bad against defenses and anti air batteries are very efficient. Mechs are op and some uu are broken

Air power is hard countered by anti air rockets. They're super fragile. The Galactic Empire civ is way OP, their unique unit doesn't cost Nova (gold) and is super strong. It would be like Japanese Samurai in aoe2 not costing gold.

Air units are good for quick raids, hit and run attacks. They are rather neutralized if the enemy has enough anti-air torrents and units, though.

I loves this game a lot. My favorite parts were the completely different designs for each faction, and the whole generator-thing. Never played it online, but it must be quite good, especially when it comes to defend generators from raiding.

Tbh i was a HUGE starwars kid and played this for literal years before i even knew AOE even existed…..but let me warn you, if you try this game it WILL ruin AOE for you, there are so many different and unique ways to play this game compared to age, its a shame this game is so unknown and under rated. With each civilization having unique starwars skins and evil civs and good civs even providing a difference between jedi and sith it feels like a truly unique experience every time you play a different civilization. Definitely worth the play.
