Sorastro, I started with your first video over the last two days and have a handful of stormtroopers done. I am surprisingly happy with them. Your videos are excellent. Thank you for doing this. I am going to try to work my way through the entire starter set of Imperial Assault. May take some time though considering costs of paints and time, but with your videos I hope to do it.

Fantastic fine job on Skywalker. Regarding eyes, I find that using white gives a 'pop-eye' effect, and I think that the smaller the figure is, the less white should be used - I have painted a few 1/6 scale heads, and I don't use pure white for them either, because eyes are never white - they are either slightly pink (tired characters), yellowish (sick), light brown (for dark-skinned people) or even a light blueish grey (for healthy caucasian figures). For a figure at this scale however, I would simply mark the eyes with a dark brown line, since the eyes will be in shadow from both the brow and the eyelids and won't be seen, not even when looked upon directly. Of course, that's me and my philosophy regarding painting.
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+Kojak0 Thanks for the tips Kojak0! I'm always open to multiple ideas and ways of doing things and enjoy trying different approaches out. Looking forward to trying some less "pop-eye"-ish techniques now :)

@sorastro: sometimes you do multiple highlight layers, then wash. Other times you wash, then apply multiple highlight layers. Why/when would you choose one technique over the other?
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Hi! It depends.. I for quite textured surfaces (like scales, or hair perhapsI often like to lay down areas of highlight first, so that I can let the wash take care of articulating the texture for me (and it helps to smooth the layers a bit). :)
@docbun7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sorastro! This is indeed a nicely painted young Luke we have there. I was wondering - which images or reference material have you checked to get inspiration for his colors? Also, you mentionhe wears a stormtrooper's belt - where did you get that idea from? Thank you! Please keep on painting and sharing with us!!
@docbun7 жыл бұрын
OK, I bet this is Luke from Episode IV, after he picks up a stormtrooper belt on his way out of the Death Star (after the sewer bath, of sorts). So I get the belt. Which means he's still wearing his Tatooine outfit. I thought the boots on his outfit would be more "sandy" than "khaki", but I might be wrong there. I'm not too fond of the color scheme from the movie, though. It bears little to no contrast. Sigh. I'm still unsure of what I'll use. your luke sure looks good.
@docbun7 жыл бұрын
One more question since I'm at it: I feel like the "blaster holster" hanging on the side of the mini is a bit thin in its bottom part, in the sense that it has like a "3D cross" on it. The top part is the strap to lock the blaster in place, which is fine. The horizontal one is fin since it marks where the blaster gets inside the holster. However, what would you think of smoothing away the bottom (vertical) part of that cross, by enlarging the bottom part with green stuff? I think that'd look more like in the movies, but i'd like your opinion on it.
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Hi Yan Hey! I confess I hadn't noticed the blaster holster issues but I think if it bothers you and you have a fix in mind then you should go for it! :)

once again you've produced an excellent video. I've really enjoyed watching the imperial assault series. may I ask a couple of quick questions though, what brand brush do you use and size? I also notice that your tips seem to remain in good shape whereas after a while I get a little kinked angle on mine and can't work out why this would happen. thanks again Nick
@Sorastro9 жыл бұрын
+nick lucas Thanks Nick! I actually put details of the brushes I use in the video description; for this video I'm using mostly a size 2 (by Rosemary and Co.) that happens to have a very fine tip on it.. I'm not much of an expert on brush care though I'm afraid so apart from washing regularly in water and not letting the brush stand brush-end-up I'm not sure what advice I can give :)

Although I'm a bit late to the party, once more great work Sorastro. Painting tutorials, music and video composition all in all make a fantastic package. One question: how bad would it be to replace Seraphim Sephia with Reikland Fleshshade for shading mix used to wash the tunic? (just trying to avoid buying Seraphim Sephia just for this)
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+Bogdan Hodorog Thank you very much Bogdan! I would suggest Aggrax Earthshade as an alternative to the Seraphim Sepia rather than Reikland Fleshade :)

Speaking of brushes, how do you keep the tips of your brushes "fine"? It seems no matter how much I care for and clean mine, they always split and/or fray after a few uses.
@Sorastro9 жыл бұрын
+marc webber Hi marc! I don't do anything special - just wash them regularly in water, and perhaps give them a little twist on some paper whilst unloading some of the paint just before painting. Having said that I do find certain brushes keep their point less well than others and more expensive brushes do seem to last longer :)
@MrMortama9 жыл бұрын
Great Videos! One question: If I'm thinking of getting started with miniature painting, specifically Imperial Assault (base), would you recommend getting some kind of starter kit with colors of do you recommend I try to get the colors you used in the videos? I was thinking of maybe getting some kind of kit and in worst case having to supplement with missing colors.
@Sorastro9 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mattias! I would probably just get the colours I need for the units I'm working on; that way we won't end up with paints we don't actually need, and I find it easier financially to build up my paint collection gradually by adding a few pots with each new mini :)

Not including the extra time filming, how long might it take to do a figure start to finish
@Sorastro9 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Poulin Hi Stephen! That's very hard to say partly because the filming part does add so much time, but I also tend to lose track of time when I'm in "the zone" :) It also varies from figure to figure but if you want a very rough guess I'd say anything between 2-5 hours.

Hi sorastro, great video! What is the main difference between using the Sephia wash instead of the earth shade for the skin? And would you always recommend the earthshade for Caucasian skin tones?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Hi Gab! I Wouldn't usually use either Agrax Earthsahde or Seraphim Sepia for Caucasian skin tones - I would just stick to using Reikland Fleshade :)

I bought the army painter Zombicide paints along with barbarian flesh. Are Citadel paints notably better?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I honestly haven't tried that many Army Painter paints, but from the few that I have I found them to be a bit more "variable" in their coverage, but they are quite a bit cheaper and you certainly can produce a fantastic paint job with them :)
@SteinerSE7 жыл бұрын
For some reason when I painted the Bugman's Glow my result is much darker than this. I think my main problem with all the painting I do following the guide is the thinning, I either get it way to thin or way to thick, but never quite right for the wanted result. (like getting caking when trying to paint faces, which I'm guessing is too thick paint).
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas! It's better to be a little too thin than too thick.. just don't overload your brush to prevent the paint from running everywhere when it's that thin :)
