For those of us who are older, you may remember the 1999 Star Wars Episode I videogame. It had a Mos Espa level which was basically a primitive open world game where you could go around solving random quests, could interact and have a chat with almost every town NPC, had to trade for ship parts (or you could just kill the owners and steal them) or you could just go off the beaten path. If you went too far with your evil deeds or went on rampage, everyone on the town would turn hostile. There were multiple ways to solve the level (the goal was to get Anakin the podracer parts he needed to finish his repairs, and get Watto to agree to a bet on the race for the T-14 hyperdrive generator), it was great. It's sad that a forgotten 1999 game with blocky graphics still feels more open world than this.

The Phantom Menace game from 1999 is so good. There are a lot of youtubers who try to present it as "so bad it's good" or "janky" and I think those are just kids who can't get over PS1 graphics. The game is just straight up a well made, well thought out, well executed game. The only flaws the game has is the ending, because it was made alongside the film and they didn't know how it ends so the final few levels are a bit rushed and based on guesswork. But every other level is just made with such soul.

I still play The Phantom Menace every once in a while, 25 years later. Mos Espa is my favorite level for exactly the reasons you describe. Podrace Arena is also, good, fighting Jabba's champion, tracking down the thief. You're correct, that felt more open world and there was freedom of choice. Game would fail you for the death of essential characters like JarJar or Anakin, Shmi. But in the Gates of Theed level you find a mother who has been seperated from her son. You can reunite them, or you can murder one or both, the game gives not a shit. Nice to see other fans of this game. It was popular to shit on for a long time, but I always liked it.

That is actually a thing since Assassin's Creed 2. You were able to disarm enemies and use their weapons but you couldn't carry those 2handed swords and bayonettes in AC3 while running and jumping across roofs, it made sense. So they just kinda kept it in lol It's like they're still using the same engine but just kept fiddling with it making it worse.

Black Widow is an example, she has peak human strength, agility, and stamina, and is an expert in many forms of martial arts. She could take out all these armed people/stormtroopers with just her strength and skill, something all the avengers can do. Now what martial art class, serum/alien pill, or boxing class did this character take to achieve this level of strength in the game? I’ve watched people play this and just forget the gunplay when they c enemies and go “It’s Clobberin’ Time!” and just run up and deck everyone. For her..how is that possible?

Custom characters. Unlockable/purchasable ships ingame. Customizable loadouts/guns you find or buy on different planets. Optional missions/quests you choose whether or not to take. Black Flag style locations you can sneak into and rob on different worlds, where different ships or loadouts can aid you in whatever tactic you want to use. Small scale coop where you and a couple friends can fly or heist together as a gang. This is basic stuff that would have made this game SO much better...you know...Outlaw stuff

honestly, yeah. If anything, ubisoft always did the same game+ over and over. If you played far cry 2 before 3 (most haven't) you would know it. Same thing for the assassins creed series. Maybe there's some exception with titles like beyond good and evil, but that game was just following a trend anyway.
