Star Wars Outlaws - Release Date - BIGGEST Space Game of the Year?

Star Wars Outlaws now has a release date, which is 30 August 2024. The question is out on whether this will be a great addition to the space game genre, or will be perhaps be something else?

This would solve a bunch of the furore over recent games. Its not much of an issue for me because im not just a gamer and tend to only pick things up when they are at least 75% off on steam. Im not recommending that for everyone. The game industry couldnt survive. Thanks to all the big spenders funding the games I will play half a decade from now.😀

Last time I bought something from Ubisoft, it came in an actual cardboard box with a cloth map... (Might & Magic X). Similar story with EA, just without all the goodies and "just" a DVD case... Dragon Age Origins XD I guess those are already eligible for being called retro games by now, depending on how you define that.

My "perfect Star Wars game" would be a remake of Star Wars Galaxies with modern graphics. Fifteen (?) years after the official servers closed SWG still holds up on private servers. They just had a good combination of elements that other games rarely get right.

There are 3 Red Flags that should concern everyone concerning this game, Disney, Lucasfilm, and Ubisoft. One of those 3 entities will find a way to screw up what is a great concept for a Star Wars game and I have tempered my expectations accordingly. I won't be buying it day 1 if at all unless word of mouth is absolutely phenomenal.

Problem with this modern star wars stuff is that they don't look like anything like Star Wars, if feels like Mass Effect: Andromeda situation... a lot of stuff from the same franchise, but with stories that doesn't fit the original work, and by the way, the amount of content wasn't ever a problem to Star Wars before Disney, you could find some pretty wild stuff in the expanded universe (now legends...).

a quick answer, no it will not succeed. Yes it'll probably be the biggest space game of the year given the fact that it's star wars and star wars is the biggest space franchise on the planet.

a more detailed answer is: This game was directed by Julian Gerighty, Mathias Karlson and Draghici Bogdan. Julian's two previous credits as director are The Division 2 and The Crew. Both games that have no lasting impression on the gaming industry. Mathias is known exclusively for The Division 2. Draghici Bogdan is the only director with credits worth anything in the industry, but all of the good credits are for visual effects or generalist artist, not directorial. this game has three untested directors, one of whom isn't a director at all but rather a special effects artist (which has value, but little in the directors seat) Its two writers, Nikki foy and Navid Khavari are both ubisoft writers responsible for some of the WORST stories in ubisoft history Far Cry 6 and its DLC and Watch Dogs legion are their main credits, none of which are very well received outside of the Vaas DLC for FC6, but i'm certain that has more to do with Mando's acting as Vaas than it does with the writing overall. It's cast is terrible outside of Dee Bradley Baker, the lead actress has zero quality credits to her name and is primarily a children's voice actor. (which isn't a bad thing, just a sign of overall quality) there is absolutely nothing of value behind the scenes of this production and if it weren't for the need to fill a diversity quota, i doubt this game wouldn't have made it this far into production.

My perfect StarWars game, or at least very close to, was actually Jedi Fallen Order. I liked Survivor a lot too actually (no, I don't want to discuss the technical issues. :D ). But yeah, that's what I want for games when it comes to StarWars: Third or First Person Lightsaber action... I lost count on how often I replayed Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy over the years. For Outlaws we'll see what Ubi does with it. I kinda hope it doesn't fall prey to the typical Ubisof Busywork Formula with questionmarks all over the map and all this stuff, but we'll see. I got to admit that I enjoyed Ghost Recon Breakpoint quite a lot recently, in spite of its Ubiness, so I have some hope for this one. :) One thing we absolutely can expect at least is a stunning open world. I gotta admit that Ubi's worldbuilding is pretty awesome most of the time.

Yeh, looking at the game play, it reminds me of AC / Lara Croft / Starfield set in the SW Universe, which on its own merits will be very enjoyable, but not a radically different enough addition to the space genre to entice me to pay full price on pre-order, particularly knowing that eventually, it will be discounted on the Ubi store or through Steam at some point in the future anyway, (and usually after they've patched up the original release)! And absolutely YES, someone needs to develop a sandbox ED / SC style game set in SW Universe, that is the way! :D

Unfortunately with an IP like Star Wars, I don't think we'll ever see a sandbox game. If we examine the the various movie settings, they are always well developed and usually follow the paradigm of mega structures. I don't see how these worlds could be generated procedurally in a sandbox galaxy far, far away.

As long as the player ship is more than simply a loading screen to fast travel between planets then i'm still interested, i expect the game will treat it like how AC Odyssey treats naval combat where it's clearly not the focus but is just im depth enough to be enjoyable as a side activity.

Whilst I love the Star Wars IP, I do think that it’s overused to hide poor games and is generally sort after for a safe profit. With the video game community in such a big uproar with the quality of games, this could quite easily be a great political tool to show developers/publishers that we won’t tolerate crap games and/or be bait and switch tendencies. At the end of the day, it’ll be down to the player base to decide what they are willing to put up with, not my individual comment. I just want games that are fit to play!

About 1/25 if not 1/50 Star Wars games are actually decent. Though some have been INCREDIBLE (Kotor, SWG, etc). Game companies just have NO idea what potential they have in their hands and BLOW IT. It should be relatively simple. You've got a gold mine to work with and can do SO MUCH with it. Yet NO ONE does.

15+ years ago I'd trust anything Star Wars, wouldn't hesitate to preorder. Sadly it's a very different animal since then and factor in Ubisoft, it's a dead duck for me. While it's called "Star Wars Outlaws", there's no way Disney will let you play an actual outlaw. You'll just be yet another Rebel operative doing whatever the rebels tell you to do. Boring and bland. Expect another bait & switch just like Jyn Urso dressed as a TIE Fighter pilot in the Rogue One trailer or Iden Versio being a TIE Fighter pilot for all of two missions in Battlefront 2. Disney won't let you play the bad guy.
