I love how when Maul says "protecting someone" you can see the look in Kenobi's eyes go instantly to "I'm going to kill this man now." And not because he hates Maul for all the vile things he's done. Just so he can protect Luke. Then kills him in three moves. The true definition of mastery.
@darthroden
@darthroden 9 ай бұрын
The moment he found him and found out his name, Maul would instantly know who Luke is and why Obi-Wan was protecting him. He would turn Luke to the dark side and use him in his revenge against Vader and Sidious. Remember, the one thing that drives Maul is revenge, it has been since Episode I....in fact it was his only line.

i remember how much you hated maul after he killed satine in the clone wars. i think it speaks to how well the writing has been for him, that you were able to be moved by his death despite all the horrible things he’s done. really amazing how the animated shows took what was ultimately a nothing character and turned him into one of the most tragic villains in the entire saga. mauls final moments with obi were beautiful.

Maul's path kinda reminds me of Jinx from League of Legends, he got raised by someone evil and got brainwashed into thinking everyone else he knew was evil. He went through as much if not more than Anakin. The guy was raised to become technically Palpatine's son and ended up realizing he got betrayed his entire life. Maul never knew what is like to be loved but at least he got to experience his brother's admiration. Unfortunately conquering Mand'alor and getting revenge on Kenobi was his only way of obtaining some satisfaction in life. He was Palpatine's best muppet for a long time before Dooku arrived, yet another tragic character who fell right into his game.

and yea... another bs star wars moment..... 1 at the beginning of phantom menace they show they have force speed as the speed run down a corridor on the ship. But obi couldnt use it to get in the fight with qui-gon to open the door for him to get killed...... then qui-gon like many pathetic jedi gets killed by 1 light saber stab...... dont care what the excuse is..... oh he was stabbed through the spine. ok..... mauls spine and lower half was straight up cut off and he survived so argument invalid. then they have to make the obi-wan show explain why dark sider users keep surviving lightsaber death blows...... oh cause revenge does wonders for your will to survive...... sure....... sure..

If you rewatch the fight you'll notice that Obi-Wan strategically changes his stance from his classic one to Qui-Gon's stance, which Maul picks up on and Obi-Wan knows how Maul thinks knowing that Maul would love the irony of killing both master and apprentice with the same moves. With this Obi-Wan knows exactly what moves Maul will make, and the killing strike he used on Qui-Gon by stunning him on the head before stabbing him Obi-Wan was prepared for it and having thought about this fight for 30 years would know the perfect way to counter it (similar to how he knew the perfect offence with the high ground against Anakin in RotS). Obi-Wan wins the fight in one move, which is changing his stance.
@jmhaces

I love that he goes from his classic stance from the prequels with the lightsaber raised over his head and parallel to his extended arm, to his stance from the original trilogy that looks like a kendo stance with both hands holding the saber in front of him, and finally settles on Qui-Gonn's stance with the saber held in an upright position next to his head to bait Maul.

Steven Stanton is an amazing voice actor. He nailed the Alec Guiness version of Kenobi. AP-5 -aka Snape droid - sounds just like Alan Rickman. Never mind how he got Tarkin down pat. Let's hope Sam Witwer's vocal cords have recovered. I would be happy if Kiner wrote a full track for AP-5 to sing. That scene really cracked me up. The lightsaber duel in Twin Suns is my favorite duel in animated Star Wars. I can imagine Kenobi thinking "Old fool. Only now at the end do you understand." (rhymes with RoTJ) Finally, may Jess enjoy her break. Mine starts October 7.

I think "awe" is the word you were looking for. You are in awe of Obi-Wan Kenobi, as are we all. Maul started the duel against Kenobi off using the same move that he used to kill Qui-Gon Jinn, symbolizing that he never moved on from that moment in The Phantom Menace. Or, as the Prophets said to Sisko, "You exist here". The ease in which Obi saw through this and took out Maul is to show how far Obi-Wan Kenobi has evolved since that moment, while Maul has remained stationary the whole time. And, yes, the master of sass remains undefeated. "Look at you. A rat in the desert." "Look what I've risen above." Classic Obi.

Twin Suns is such a good episode. Uou get to see how much Obi Wan has evolved over the years and how Maul hasn’t. I was shook to see him interact with Ezra the firzt time I saw Rebels. I wasn’t expecting that at all. But the animated shows have expandedMaul as a character beautifully and I love that. That duel at the end became one of my favorite in animation once I had it broken down for me. It’s like poetry. It rhymes. And it says a lot about Kenobi’s character that Maul died in his arms like those he killed. I got so many chills at the Luke cameo with the force theme.

I love how these two episodes are complete polar opposites of each other, yet each perfectly embody the different aspects of the show. On one hand, you have an episode that's primarily built around Chopper and AP-5 arguing with each other, starting off with an "Annie Get Your Gun" reference and ending with AP-5 getting a musical number, and featuring Josh Gad as a villainous nerdy hacker. And on the other hand, you have a dark and often rather unsettling adventure that climaxes with an awesome lightsaber duel straight out of a classic samurai film, and wraps up Maul's story in a perfect fashion. It's the perfect demonstration of the duality of the show's existence, and why it's so great

I remember some people were disappointed with the Maul and Kenobi showdown but I loved it then and I love it now: - Its brevity brings to mind samurai duels in Akira Kurosawa movies (major influence on Star Wars) and shows how skilled Obi Wan has become in his old age (and how weak Maul has gotten over the years of injuries, torture and madness) - Loved how Obi Wan was willing to talk and dissuade Maul from fighting but only gave in when Maul started to threaten Luke. Even then it wasn’t striking Maul down in anger but in defense of his charge. - Obi-Wan comforting Maul at the end. This is a being that has caused Obi-Wan anguish by killing his father figure, the love of his life and is now threatening the boy that’s like a surrogate son to him. Yet all the same Obi-Wan gave him comfort in the end.

Maul died the moment he said the word "someone"". This was the greatest Light Saber fight in all of Star Wars, it was a realistic representation of a true master swordsman vs master swordsman fight. When Samurai fought each other it wasn't a long drawn out acrobatic crazy moves fight, it was literally this, 2-3 strikes and someone was dead. When I first saw this I was a little disappointed but the longer i thought about it the more I loved it, and the way Obi-Wan tricked Maul using Qui-Gon's stance to make Maul try the same move he did to kill Qui-Gon against him was amazing.

The implications of the Lesson Ezra Bridger needed to Learn from Obi-Wan was "Family is Everything", being him the one to devote his life to take care of what remains of his, being Anakin not just his padawan but his brother and Amidala as his Sister, coming from rescuing Leia on his solo series and giving his life away for his friend's child's. The Lesson's loud and clear and Ezra is a really good student as we know he went and do precisely what Obi told him to do.

You know, I've always wondered why people in Star Wars, not just Imperials, seem slow to catch on when their droids are working against them for one reason or another. It took a while for Hera to catch on that Chopper had been taken over. Then you think about modern AI, and even just dumb recommendation/boost algorithms, and how many people just blindly accept what they're told by those algorithms, it makes total sense.

I also got into the animated shows after watching the Mandalorian s1. And I 110% agree with everything you said about Obi Wan. He’s been throuth so much and come out of it stronger and more enlightened than ever. Like he told Maul look what I’ve risen above. He’s an amazing character. The way you feel ablut him is very similar to the way I feel about Bo Katan. I mean she’s a very different character with her unique struggles and back story so the situations aren’t exactly the same. She’s also not as universally loved. I got introduced to her in the animated shows and thought she was really cool and bad ass if a bit foolish and unnecessarily ruthless during her time with Death Watch. But she grew on me throughout Clone Wars s7 and Rebels and I found that I could sympathize with her goals and way of thinking at least to a certain degree. This was especially true in Rebels when she was much more sympathetic and a bit nicer than Clone Wars. Then we saw her in live action and I lost my freaking mind because I thought she was cool and could end up having a really interesting dynamic with Din but not much more. And she still had a bit too much arrogance for me to want her as Mandalore again. I said before s3 that they’d have to work hard to convince me that she was worthy to rule. Say what you want about s3 and its problems, but I was fully invested by the end. My respect for her, which was already pretty high by the way, went up so much and now she’s my favorite Mando behind Din. I’ll stop there because this tangent is long enough.

I loved your analysis. Yes Maul is both victim and perpetrator. His life constantly shifts from one state to another making him a fascinating and complex character. The most powerful fuel for the will is not love, it is hate (which is but a variant of love), but in the end it burns you, it consumes you. That is why love is sometimes so difficult (portrayed by Kenobi), because it requires time, patience, dedication. You may not see the results... But in the end, it is worth it. ❤🖤

So many people have obviously explained and given their input on the fight between Obi and Maul, but there is one more little button that I'd like to add that is I guess pretty obvious but like to focus on: Yeah Maul had SOME clarity in the end, embraced by his mortal enemy, in his final breaths he got to see beyond. But it speaks to the tragedy of Maul that even in that clarity, his last words were of revenge. His hope that the chosen one can avenge them. All of them. And I think for Obi there is legitimate sadness for Maul for what he became. What he was turned into by the Sith, and how he was never ever to escape it.

Twin Suns is one of the best episodes of ANY Star Wars... and it truly shows the real strength of Obi-Wan. Consider the number of times he could have acted out of hate, or revenge. Even in striking down Maul -- who has caused him endless pain -- he does so calm, collected, and becsuse he had to. And even in that moment, he holds him not as an enemy, but with empathy. His greatest adversary, the killer of his lover, and he can still forgive. He still -- much like on Mandalore when Satine was held hostage -- is capable of pitying Maul for the course his life took him. Obi-wan holding Maul in his arms, comforting him in his final moments? Looking down with pity and even regret? THAT is what it means to be a Jedi. Old Ben's greatest strength is forgiveness. Were that we all could be held to that mark. Honestly, it reminds me of another great sci-fi character: "You're all the same, you screaming kids, you know that? 'Look at me, I'm unforgivable.' Well here's the unforeseeable, I forgive you. After all you've done. I forgive you."

Maul and Obi-Wan's duel shows how Obi-Wan has grown over the years and Maul is stuck in the past. He's an old former Sith and, though still powerful, he's not longer as strong as he was in his prime and is still hung up on what is basically history by now, while Obi-Wan has come into his own as a Jedi Master and they're no longer anywhere on the same level. Maul was dead the moment he decided to fight Obi-Wan and implicitly threaten Luke's safety. While Maul is still fixated on his hate of Kenobi and the betrayal he and his brother suffered at Palpatine's hands, Obi-Wan cradles Maul in his dying moments and gives him a small measure of peace, just like he once cradled Satine and Qui-Gonn, both of whom died at Maul's hands, and he even lays Maul's body to rest.

Its ironic, for all the evil Maul did: killing Qui-Gon and Satine, all his obsession, in the end Obi-Wan held no hate in his heart for Maul, only pity. Remember back in Clone Wars before he killed Satine, Obi-Wan told Maul that he understood the choice to join the Dark side had never truly been Mauls. He also knew he had to kill him when he figured out about Luke. Maul, for all his obsession and his hatred, never truly grew in the time they last faced each other, while Obi-Wan was growing in the Force in ways Maul could never dream of in his exile. That fight was a perfect example of the tragedy of Darth Maul. He never truly had a chance.

The difference between Obi-Wan and Maul is the difference between the light and the dark side. Fans of the dark side often call the jedi stupid for following their strict code, they think this would just limit their possibilities. They believe that it's their purpose as dark side force users to use their power and break the rules, make the laws of nature bow to their will, and by that, achieving ultimate freedom while the jedi stay limited to their side of the force. But in reality, it's quite the opposite. The way to become stronger with the force is different for the two sides. It's obvious that a jedi has to seek for the light and a sith has to search for the darkness, but how should you react to the other side? If the jedi just stay away from the light, they're actually limited in power. To grow stronger, they have to get closer to the darkness again and fight it, risking everything they have. Obi-Wan had to watch Satine die in front of him, but he didn't surrender to the darkness, and after that, he survived order 66 relatively easy. But then his pain and fear were pulling him closer to the dark side again when he had to face Vader again in the Kenobi show. He was able to resist again and became stronger and wiser than ever. For the sith on the other hand, the way to power is actually that simple. Just move as far away from the light as possible, let go of anything positive that could pull you to the light again. With this method, you can gain strength much faster, even without that much training or talent. This is why some uneducated people believe that the sith are stronger than the jedi which is obviously nonsense since the force is always in balance and therefore their strength has to be equal. But the stronger you get in the dark side, the more you have to surrender yourself to all your negative emotions. And in the end, you lose the ability to make any rational decision. The dark side is controlling you through your emotions. The sith want to be free from the rules, but in the end, they are puppets of the force. Maul spend so long in the darkness that he couldn't make any free decision anymore. He was chasing Obi-Wan for no real purpose, because he had to. Because he was physically unable to choose a different way.

"He will avenge us". Who is us? In that moment Maul understood that him and Kenobi had a common enemy. Palpatine. Maul fueled and motivated by hatred, in to his dying breath, found a common goal with his enemy. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. But I'm still curious about us. Is it Maul + Kenobi? Or could it be Maul + Opress? I choose to believe it is Maul + Opress.

I think it’s not just himself or his himself and his brother or himself and Obi-Wan or all three of them, but everybody Palpatine had ever wronged. All of the Jedi, Grievous, Count Dooku, Ventress, the night sisters, the whole of the Republic, everybody.

10:00 Had to pause again just 30 seconds later to "buckle up" tho there's no such a thing on this ride right? Just your facial gestures on that very second should be your thumbnail frame, just saying. Ok, now you know what is gonna be about and you immediatly got who we are about to see just with the view of that sand and that celestial sky... May the Force Be With Us

Sure. Maul must have just wanted to commit suicide here because we saw how Obi was vs Vader a short time after this... 0 shot he could have beat anyone in a light saber fight. and thats the problem with all this addition content added after the fact. the originals did the best they could with the technology for the time but especially due to the practical lightsaber prop it just made for a really lack luster action scene

"Faux sci-fi" you say, as if the genre has ever been one homogeneous thing. Not everything needs to be like Blade Runner, Dune, or 2001. Science fiction/fantasy stories can all coexist under the umbrella of that term. Stop being pretentious (and also creepy to Jess).
