It's a small thing, but you may have noticed, Kanan gets his eyesight back, right before the flames engulf him. He told her that he wanted to see her again, and that wish was fulfilled.

This is one of those episodes where I really looked forward to Jess' reaction. It is up there with Twilight of the Apprentice. In any case, Kanan ultimately kept his promise to Hera in Season 2. He saw her again, thanks to the Force itself. Depa Billaba would have been proud of her former Padawan.

Kanan had seen the future through the Force and he knew that in order to save Hera and the others he'd have to let Ezra take the lead and ultimately sacrifice himself, and he had made peace with that. That's why during that whole episode he's very calm and he's basically saying his goodbyes to Ezra, Sabine and Hera.

It also shows him returning to who he really is which is Caleb Dume. Its why he cuts his hair the way he does and why the Loth Wolf he sees keeps saying "Dume" it's telling him it's time to return to his true self.

I don't really know why, but it's not even what's happening or even Hera's reaction that always gets me, it's that brief shot of Sabine. Hera and Ezra can let grief take hold of them immediatly, she can't afford that, she has to get them out first.

Kanan's death is the most devastating event in Star Wars, on par with the finale of Clone Wars. It also elevated Rebels to the same heights as Clone Wars. The amount of emotion contained in that final exchange of glances between Kanan and Hera is devastating, the peace and acceptance in his eyes contrasted with the look of desperation, horror and heartbreak in hers, it's just...gah! Filoni really managed to stab us in the heart with this one, easily the most tragic scene in one of these animated shows since I think Satine's death back in Clone Wars

For the whole first six months after watching this episode, I would go about my normal day, and then remember in the gap between thoughts that Kanan died, and start tearing up. I never thought I would get that attached to an animated Star Wars character. Years later, I'm still sad about it.

Oh Jess my heart broke for you. Not from your reaction to the death itself, but seeing you try to process it and acknowledge that you’re still in shock. This is one reaction where not a single person will judge you for crying. I never did anyway, but you get my point. That’s the awful beauty of this show. You spend 2 episodes fearing for Herra and then… that happens and it just compleyely throws you off your guard if you’re not expecting it. Like you said their was a lot of build up and little hints that I caught since I’ve watched this before but are easy to overlopk. And the thing is up until the end of ep10 it’s just another episode of Tebels. Herra is rescued, she and Kanan banter some, but nothing else really. You don’t know how to ferl about the end right now. The show does a heartbreakingly good job breaking it down in the next few episodes particularly ep11. You get to see how everyone deals with the loss and it’s absolutely gut wrenching. I think this is the saddest Star Wars death for me.

So, as I had mentioned I watched this the day or so that it aired on TV. In the years since I have done no less than four re-watches of the entire series. In all of that time and all of those re-watches that scene never gets easier. And I always feel this pit in my stomach whenever I go to re-watch this series and then I remember "oh yeah that 4th season hits like an all-terrain tactical Enforcer( aka the tank that Rex wolf and Gregor were driving when they were introduced in relics of the Old Republic). And I know that I could spare myself the Pain by not watching this particular episode but you absolutely have to because it's a very important moment for Kanan. And it definitely delivers on a long-held fan theory about Kanan and Hera. Also you have to appreciate that a member of the iron Squadron is currently serving with Phoenix Group after the passing of his uncle. And if you think the weird has gone away just because you're in mourning just wait until the next few episodes.

Going through your Rebels reactions again (your enjoyment of this show makes it easy to do). Apologies in advance for the length of this comment. Three more observations, if I may: 1. While our Rebels heroes were focused solely on getting Hera back, Kanan knew he had TWO missions. The first, to rescue Hera. The second, complete the rebel assault's primary objective to destroy the fuel depot. I think THIS is what the Lothwolf "told" Kanan, and that Hera's rescue would be the catalyst that ensured the mission's success. 2. In the midst of all the destruction at the fuel depot, while Kanan was containing all the kenetic energy of the explosion, he found the way to complete the mission and save those he loved. 3. The most touching of all is the return of his sight. It takes me back to Kanan's promise to Hera way back in S2E21, just as he, Ezra & Ahsoka were leaving to Malachor, Kanan told Hera they would see each other again.

That episode really exemplified what a true Jedi should be. Kanan’s journey shows us what could’ve been for Anakin had his problems been addressed. This episode does a great job mirroring and explaining the concept of attachments in SW. Attachments in SW are not like ours, and they hold negative connotations, with reason. Kanan’s love for Hera and the Ghost Crew was strong and in turn gave him strength. The final lesson for him was attachments, and he passed because his love was true and free of fear. That’s a key point, because the love the Jedi encourage has to be free of fear and possession, because eventually it turns to hate. Kanan’s love was free of that, and when the moment, he let them go. By letting them go, Kanan got clarity and more importantly, saved them. That’s what true love is, selfless and fearless.

Thanks for Reaction! Honestly, after the fool Price decided to blow up the fuel reserves for the production complex and fighters, completely killing the entire project worth several million credits for the sake of one death, I facepalmed my forehead and didn’t even watch the end of the episode! On the second try, I finally watched the ending, and you know, it didn’t become a cooler moment for me. I understand why people were moved by the moment of self-sacrifice of Fives, Hardcase, Heavy, Thorn or Echo: they themselves made the decision to die in order to complete the mission. Nothing like that is felt here, because the governor made this decision for Kanan, against his will. Moreover, he did not have to die at all. Why the hell was he even staying on that roof? Oh, he was trying to contain the explosion? Ladies and gentlemen, the blast wave was already spreading slowly at first. Kanan (Caleb) had plenty of time to join his rebel friends and fly away within seconds of hitting the fuel tank. Rubric “Suggest if you criticize” In order for everything to look convincing and offensive enough, Kanan himself had to plant explosives around the perimeter of the warehouse, taking advantage of the opportunity. During the retreat, he had to be wounded in the leg or concussed in order to lose the opportunity to escape. And then, in the face of death at the sight of the paratroopers surrounding him, he would have to set the detonator into action, dying, but taking with him all the hopes of the Empire!

Just remember it's ok to cry. You know I have followed you from day one and remember have told you "hold that thought" on the comments. And finally here we are. Star Wars is meant to teach Thanatology cause The End is also part of the ride and Death is part of life. One of the things of being autistic is I can't be "antebellum" and gracefully pass on say the words. Remember my own reaction during covid lock in cause my first words are always the same: he's gone for real. If only my head could be polite and graceful like you dear. But I know I'm meant to remind others it is ok to cry for the pain is real.

That ending is the most traumatic in all of Star Wars. It absolutely wrecks me every time I watch it. But watching you watch it for the first time made it even worse. Kanan is the BEST Jedi. A Jedi so noble he was knighted by the force itself. It's the twisted hand of fate(or the(will of the force) that he got the ultimate heroes death. To use the abilities he was given to save everyone he cares about is the most honorable death. And the most sad. To watch his eyesight return to see Hera one more time was a gift from the force. And it was absolutely a gut punch of emotions. This was Star Wars at its best, IMO.

I dunno how much "weight" there is to this, but I heard that in production they were arguing over what Hera was going to say. There was... something else she could have said that would have been even more impactful. And you'll need to wait for the final episode to find out what. I know, I know... Spoilers. Much like Ash, Kanen never truly "thought of himself as a Jedi" for most of his life. It was only in the final weeks he realized it. What you said about clarity -- a clarity of purpose -- is very true in this episode. It reminds me of "you know who". Kanen was a Jedi on the day it was impossible to get it right. He made his stand. Not because it was easy, but because it was right.

This is a tough one! It's part of what makes the show great though. You start the series with this silly light-hearted tone and by the time you get near the end they can tear your heart out with stuff like this. The character arcs are amazing. Clone Wars was pretty similar.

Don't feel bad about being in shock Jess, I don't think anyone saw this coming in advance. This one blew everyone away. (By the way, you look great!)

I saw my other post was deleted... I will try this is another manner and hope this works, but if it is still a problem, my apologies. There is a video from Heroes Fan Production called "Kanan Jarrus | Jedi Knight [A tribute to Caleb Dume" - It is a wonderful tribute to Kanan and I'd love it if you saw it - and while it would be amazing if you reacted to it here on your channel, I just would love for you to see it. It has footage up to episode 11 with nothing beyond... so you will want to wait until AFTER you see episode 11 before watching it. It is a beautiful video and one of the best character tributes I have ever seen. Again... if there is a reason me mentioning this video is something that needs to be deleted... I apologize from breaking a rule... it was not intentional. I just wanted to share a video I really love about Kanan. :)

Absolutely. He even cuts off his ponytail he's had all these years as if to confirm to us his Masterhood. Caleb Dume - legend.

I am shamefully behind on watching these, but I see someone react to Jedi Night and I immediately click. Because that shit hurt.

Now imagine many of us watching this when they released it.... Rebels was not as lethal to its characters as some shows, but damn Rebel Assault broke many of us
