With all the special editions that Lucas has released over the years, nothing he has done, comes anywhere close to being as good as this! The original fight scene was in desperate need of an upgrade from the get go, unfortunately, everything that could go wrong while shooting the scenes, did go wrong. 1. Alec Guinness's lack of swordplay experience, as well as his age. 2. Severe mobility issues with the original Vader costume. 3. The lightsaber props, being incredibly fragile and constantly breaking. 4. Hollywood was entirely focused, at the time on explosions and gun battles and swordplay was very much a lost art in western movies. 5. Lucas simply didn't have the time or budget to invest heavily in the fight scene, or keep making props, or create a different more sturdy prop. People tend to forget, it's a minor miracle the movie ever made it to theatres, let alone that it became a international success and spawn an entire franchise of films and shows.
@kevinnorwood87822 жыл бұрын
PO Uh, allow to correct you on your first point. Sir Alec Guinness was VERY proficient in swordplay and stage combat. But because the Lightsaber props were so fragile, he wasn't able to showcase his skills. But you are right about his age being a factor.
@thegorn682 жыл бұрын
While I agree with your points, Lucas DID intend for the original fight scene to be at the slow, calculated pace it was. Mainly because it was inspired by Samurai sword technique and play. If you ever watch Samurai movies with sword fights, especially older characters, the strikes are few but meaningful. They don't swing their swords around like a baton. It's very, slow, methodical, calculated and with no wasted motion. A good example in a more recent film is watch the final fight when Uma Thurman faces Lucy Liu in "Kill Bill Vol.1", That's EXACTLY how Samurai sword fight. Tarantino watched a lot of Samurai films like Lucas did growing up. The other reason is he wanted it to show that Obi Wan was an old man and Vader was limited because he was more machine. This is in stark contrast to the lightsaber duels in the Prequel Trilogy where we see the Jedi at their peak as an order. Hence, the "lame" light saber fight in A New Hope. Of course, Lucas muddled all of that and sent a mixed message when you had Count Dooku, an older character than Kenobi, doing summersault flips off a balcony, etc. LOL! Oh well. What can you do?
@po52832 жыл бұрын
@@kevinnorwood8782 Can you provide any examples, since I am unaware of any other films of his that involved any kind of swordplay. While I'm certain he did learn a bit of stage combat given his years doing theatre, that hardly would make him "VERY" proficient. Not to mention there being a big difference between stage combat for a play and a well choreographed fight scene in a movie.
@po52832 жыл бұрын
@@thegorn68 Lucas's intent is beside the point, the fact is he failed to capture the esthetic he was going for. Nobody looks at the fight scene in A New Hope and thinks wow what an amazing scene. I wasn't implying that they needed to add in flips etcetera. The reimagining seems to be more in line with what Lucas had in mind, with perhaps a couple of exceptions. I would point to Obi vs Maul in Rebels, as another example of being more in line with Lucas's intent, but once again that's not what we see on screen by any means.

The thing about this is that it doesn’t fit at all with the style of the whole rest of the film. It’s way too frantic and over the top and it would really stand out from the rest of the movie. It’s a very “fanboy” version of the fight. If they could tone it down just a tad it could fit in better.

In 1976 when they actually filmed the first dual. The lightsabers were like fishing poles, and or telescopic pointers with litmus tape on them. So even if they were able to swing them around fast and wildly they would break very easily. Mark Hamil comments in one of the making of documentaries, that George Lucas told them to pretend that they were like heavy broadswords. So the fight was a tad better in Empire strikes back, and they got better with each movie over time, and since the CGI and Digitizing got way better, they could make them more like super speed Samuri fights. So yea this so fixes the concept.

The problem with the original '77 fight is that it looked like what it was, two old men having a basic swordfight. With how lightsaber combat was refined later on this edited scene would be really good if it was professionally touched up a bit and added to the movie.

I should mention is they had to show the other characters between the fights because Darth Vader and Obi-Wan they duel with their light sabers but they had to move to another location of the death star all the way to the location where Obi-Wan’s death occurs.

Unpopular opinion compared to the rest of the fandom: I actually think the original duel between Vader and Obi-Wan in ANH works well enough in it's own right. Sure, it doesn't have the intensity of the duels in Empire or Jedi, or any of the amazing choreography like the prequels, but it's just meant to be two old men reuniting after so many years. The reunion, not the duel, is meant to be the core of that scene, all while Kenobi buys time for the others to escape. That being said, I do really like this fan edit of the scene. It has some great music and choreography to set itself apart from the original and brings a much more stylish dynamic to the scene "Impressive. Most impressive." :)

It's certainly well done for a fan made production. It's interesting, though a little too absurdly energetic for my tastes. I've seen a lot of fans talk about wanting to insert this scene into the movie, but to me it just doesn't fit. It's the camera work, it doesn't match the rest of the movie, if this were to get dropped into Star Wars, it would stick out like a sore thumb. I'm content to leave the original fight as it was.
@kaiielle2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wouldn't want it to *actually* replace the scene, but it's fine to enjoy both!
@GeoffreyToday2 жыл бұрын
@@kaiielle What I would love to see is this kind of thing, but done in a style that actually matches the film. Like, I'm certainly not opposed to injecting some more energy into the fight, but I don't want it to pull me out of the movie either. if you search "REVISITED Obi-wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader" on youtube, you'll find the duel scene from a fan edit that has recut the sequence to create more energy. It's not a bad effort, though I'm not a fan of including the prequel score personally, it just doesn't gel with the score for ANH. Back in '76 when it was filmed, there were a number of things that limited the fight: The Vader helmet severely limits the performers vision, and the bulky costume was difficult to move in. Alec Guiness was in his 60s and just not up to the athleticism for a more energetically choreographed fight. The rational at the time was that it was a fight between an old man, and a man who was crippled and mostly mechanical. And of course, when they filmed Star Wars, Vader wasn't Anakin yet, he was still his own character who had killed Anakin. The switch to having actually been Anakin didn't come about until the writing of The Empire Strikes Back, so the duel as written for ANH wasn't written to have the same emotional content as it would have been otherwise.
@onemoreminute05432 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the faster pace and quicker camera cuts/angles doesn't quite fit the documentary style Lucas created for Star Wars. I think the best way to create a remastered version of the original duel would be to model it after the Vader vs Luke duel from Empire. But the fan edit in it's own right is really impressive. The production value is shockingly high
@shawnlittle30912 жыл бұрын
Some of the camera work is a bit ridiculous but they really should add this new improved version for a new Hope. Ever since Star Wars 1997 Special additions came out they have made some changes here and there some of the changes were Mmm really!!! But some were definitely necessary.
