Has anyone talked about the cheats for this game? You could play as a wampa, a snow trooper, and AT-ST and others! You could do all kinds of things like unlimited jetpack, super jump, wall ghost, all weapons. This is one of the best Star Wars games ever, making a top ten list for sure, maybe even top 5 and it doesn't even involve using The Force.

This game is in the same league as the films it's based off. You seem to go through every aspect of Star Wars: fighting in Space, fighting on ground, suspense, pod racing, I could go on and on. The graphics are good, and about the best you'll get for when it came out, and for a cartridge. My favorite level was "Gail Spaceport," where you get your jetpack.

I still remember finally beating this game with my little brother watching behind me in excitement haha i was probably 8 yrs old and he was six we had a blast playing it and now whenever i play it it seems easy but back in the day it was a fun little challenge. Oh how i miss the simple days haha
@Jack_804 жыл бұрын
i was better at it as a kid, but mainly because i played it more than any other 64 game. i used to play this on the hsrdest difficulty and replaying it recently normal mode was decently challenging. this game is pretty challenging at first at requires some practice to get good, which is why it gets some hate. many gamers these days want to get past everything on the first try, and if they can't the controls suck or it has terrible level design, or whatever other excuses they come up with to cover up that they just suck at the game or don't have the small amount of patience required to improve at it.
@ksldfhjlkdsj5 жыл бұрын
You know, seeing the footage here and remembering when this game released, I can't help but give this game credit for how ambitious it actually was. Make no mistake, it's a relic by today's standards but when you examine the game in the context of mid to late 1996, and consider that it was a launch title for a very groundbreaking new system, it accomplished a hell of a lot. Forget the bad controls for a second; not only was this game developed before the n64 controller design was finalized, as was mentioned in a separate video on the subject, but celebrated games that came along later such as Goldeneye were not a whole lot better looking back. Fully 3D shooters like this were fairly new territory even on PC and practically nonexistent on home consoles. Not only that but they managed to squeeze in levels involving the flying combat, arcade style rail shooting from a turret, the swoop bike level and the jet pack mechanics; say what you want about the 3rd person action levels of the game but I feel that those were done very well for the time and added a lot of freshness to the game. And this game-play variety hasn't been attempted a whole lot lately either which is a real shame, because as a kid this is really what I loved most about the game. A lot of the later Star Wars titles like the 3rd Rouge Squadron game on the GameCube, the later Jedi Knight series and the Force Unleashed have flirted with it a tad but we haven't seen it in a long time. This style really ought to come back, I think they could really use it to breathe some new life into aging game-play mechanics of games today.
@bradcarey307810 жыл бұрын
Played this when I was 8 or 9. It is one of my fondest memories of that era of gaming. Though after the first time I played the second level I could never play that one again. When I found the Wampa's in the cage, I was going to leave them in there. My dad was like "Psh, they are white wookies that the Empire imprisoned! You should let them out and they'll help you." I told him that I thought he was wrong... but being young I trusted him. So I did let them out... and they killed me. Scared the crap out of me! Dad thought it was funny -_- ... I always made him play that one for me after hah.

More whining and complaining about levels being too long? The Gall Spaceport was an amazingly well designed level. Why does everyone think they should be able to beat a game on a single playthrough? This game was extremely challenging, with many secrets to unlock and memorable moments. The levels where you are on foot are minimally cumbersome until you get used to the controls. Why is everything such a major complaint? Take the time to actually get good at the game!

Truly amazing game. I've never seen the PC cut scenes but personally even then I thought that the comic based cut-scenes were really well done, unique and beautiful. This was one of my very favorite games as a kid and I remember the first time I played it again as an adult, the haunting music and vivid aesthetics of these scenes, unlike anything else I really know of, was overwhelmingly nostalgic in a way that moved me. Not just some canned animation but a real work of art.

Totally agreed. The smell of the N64, every little sound from the music to grunting when you take damage, that weapon loading like click when you pick up ammo. The textures and camera angles which you often have to fight the controls over lol. I remember how difficult and intimidating many parts were as a kid, the initial Hoth battle where you have to tie the AT up. Then the Wampa’s in the base and AT in the hangar, that was scary but more so the AT because it was so hard to beat. Boba Fett was so cool and hard to beat, but it made him feel accurate to the lore, a badass, and I remember being jealous that his jet pack was better that yours. And IG-88, I fell off those trains getting to him so many times lol, to face the stuff of nightmares, I mean those sounds he made and leaping at you to fry you with a flamethrower. Those two boss encounters stand out in my memory, the way they fit into the story and gameplay, difficulty and the sheer aesthetic effect, they were excellent.

I saw this game in the late 1990s when my family was looking at houses to move into around Long Island, while we never did move out of the home I am still in now, I recall this one family having two TVs and two N64s, the one that I remember not being used had the Shadows of the Empire label on it and I wanted it bad, even though I knew nothing about it other than that it was Star Wars. I went to FuncoLand in Levittown, NY, found the cartridge with the label, and bought it. I liked it a lot, I already had Rogue Squadron, but the on-foot levels in SotE were fun, even if the controls weren't perfect. They need to remaster this game for all consoles including PC. It had to be the second to last great multimedia chapter in Star Wars history. The stories and games that came out after Episode II were great, much more fun than the prequel and sequel trilogies themselves, and the first planned sequel trilogy isn't even done yet.

The first thing that impressed me when I plugged in this cart back in about April 1997 was how the real instrumental theme tune was pumping out of a cartridge. All the music from this game has been ripped straight from the movies and way better than anything I heard from Tie Fighter for the PC! As my N64 collection grew this one took a back seat but I still used to go back to it for the Hoth first stage.

I remember a lot of people not liking Dash Rendar but I never really cared I was too young to really understand why they didn't like him. I remember playing the Hoth level and thinking it was amazing. I wanted a game that was just the flying sections and then I got Rogue Squadron!!! it was like a dream come true. Back in the day Star Wars game always got made with a lot of care and attention. it was rare to get a bad game unlike today with Disney and EA. sad times. I am happy I lived through the golden age of Star Wars games 1997-2006 (start with Shadows of the Empire and ends in 2006 with Kotor 2)

Loved Dash! Nice review. You were honest with yourself; this game was so fun and replayable!

Great review - I agree with all of it. I played the Hoth mission a ton, and I was always disappointed by how short the turret level was.

This was one of my first n64 games and I loved it. I still think its one of the best Star Wars games ever. I liked the variety of level types with flying, gunner, "motorcycle," and rail-shooter, as well as walking levels. I also liked that you used a blaster. I don't care for light saber battling as much as shooting.

I played it as a kid in the late 90s when you had to go to "the kid" to get the scoop about video game quality. We had a video game barter system and we would trade in the neighborhood. Your neighborhood was social media in those days.

IMO the best Star Wars game on the console. I'm not a huge fan of the movies, but I do like the universe. And this definitely felt like I was part of the universe instead of just using some Star Wars themed stuff in Star Wars themed places. Episode 1: Racer also did a pretty good job with the universe immersion but I felt this one was just so in depth.

I played the PC version when I was maybe six or seven years old. I recall playing this everytime I get back from my kindergarten. I am not sure if I have beaten the game as I only remembered getting stuck in level 8, the Imperial sewers. Sadly, I lost the disk when I was moving to a new home. I cried when I discovered that. haha.

I played this mostly in first person and it seems to help the feel of the controls somewhat to me. Great game.

I remember playing the first level to death. Playing a scene out of movie was so awesome. But what was cool is i had read the book long before i played the game and it was damn fun game. Some frustrating parts (fighting the Diagona) but still a fun title for being a part of the crop of the first titles to come out on the N64..

I always loved playing this game as a kid, and since Star Wars Racer has been rereleased on modern consoles, I wish they would rerelease this game too,, even if it's the PC version, i don't care, just please bring the game back

I remember this was one of the first N64 games I played as a kid. I remember being so hyped for it as I love Star Wars a lot. For some reason though, I never really played it that much. I loved the concept of the game but I remember always just being really frustrated by the controls. It always felt like it took forever to do anything and it all just felt very slow. Like whenever you try to trip up the AT-ATs, it always felt like it took forever and then it was frustrating if you let the hook go too soon and then you'd have to do it all over again. I also remember being really terrified by the wampas as kid. I'd love to play this again as an adult sometime to see if I'm any better playing this game now. I could only ever manage to make it to that train level before I kept getting killed all the time. I do agree though the music was so beautiful and I lost track of how many times I used to fire up the game just to listen to the theme song.

Excellent. I've got to say though the best Star Wars game imo is Knights of the Old Republic. Cracking story line with a twist that rivals, if not beats The twist in Empire Strikes Back..

My first glimpse of this game was playing only the first level at a party and deciding it was a must buy. I also bought it and got to the 2nd level and thought 'what the hell?' I thought it was insane that there was a cheat to skip the vehicle levels when they were by far the best parts of the game. The Sewer level creeped me out so much I never finished it, but whenever I got tired of the way Rogue Squadron anchored you in planet atmospheres, I'd boot Shadows up, ignore the main theme (seriously- they went to some serious effort to find the only part of the whole Star Wars soundtrack that sounded deathly boring, only to use it as a theme) and go through the ridiculously complicated procedure to unlock all levels. Think I had to press so many buttons at once I was using my chin on the joystick to unlock stuff. Anyway- I'd unlock the skyhook battle and just play that- swooping around in space blowing ships up. The ability to change the Outrider into an X wing or TIE Fighter was an absolute stroke of genius, and I could pretend I was playing on whichever side I wanted.
@benjaminasks32538 жыл бұрын
+brok2 Wow I totally remember using my face to tilt the control stick halfway left and right to get that debug mode and other tricks like changing the vehicle on the last level. It was amazingly freeing to be able to go after xwings in a tie fighter or try to take out the star destroyer towers.

Another awesome review Glenn! This was one of my favorite 64 games as a kid, but after recently going back to play it, the controls really didn't hold up for me. This one definitely needs an HD remake - even if it's just the first Hoth level.

now that would be cool although i guess you should check out my next review in star wars month RE the comment about hoth :P

Belive it or not, I think it's actually quite scary to imagine the amount of effort needed to make the animated intros (Not the 'RetroWareTV' logo.) for each individual review, which by the way, I feel that the Duke Nukem 3D intro looks like the best. This is the level of effort that is not a necessity for making a good review, but it makes a solid review (Like this one.) stand out from the others in a quality standpoint. You are doing everything right, never forget that. :)

This was an awesome game back in the day. Factor 5 would later perfect the air combat formula of what this game teased. The balance of game styles was very fresh, giving the game high replayability.
@ZachAttackIsBack7 жыл бұрын
The first level was amazing. Went back and played it again and that level still holds up. The on foot sections ... don't hold up too well. Like most N64 games, the controls are archaic by today's standards. We are spoiled by dual analog sticks. I loved my N64 back in the day, but my nostalgia bubble gets popped every time I pick up that controller.

Lol, I remember my cousin told me you were able to play as skywalker with a light saber if you completed the game on the hardest difficulty and collected everything. I was so pissed for months after I did just that I never played this game again.

I know this game had it's flaws but it's one of my all time favorite Star Wars games. The levels were huge and awesome, to call the foot levels "filler" is ridiculous, that's the bulk of the game and the most enjoyable part; even though the "Hoth" and "Skyhook" levels are probably the two best levels in the game. SHOTE had serious atmosphere and was even pretty creepy - The IG88 level is intense, especially with the noises he makes, and the Boba Fett level had an erie feeling to it. All in all one of my top 5 N64 games.
