Sike. Battlefront 2 has a new anti cheat that considers any and all mods as cheats, effectively killing all the mod support that’s built up over the years. Mods were the only thing breathing life into the game after EA shot it dead and now that’s gone too.

By the books, squadron mates identified each other by call signs true, but while in the fighter they were identified by numbers. Squadron Captain was “1”, Lieutenant was “2”, and “3 - 5” for the remaining squadron members. I am looking forward to flexing my lore

You're probably not going to get that for a while unless every country does what Korea did and fibers up their entire telecom infrastructure. Having a game like Fortnite or CounterStrike where the players are just a box sliding around abiding by friction properties is easy enough since they're just a box. But rotating 80 different characters 6dof would take up a lot of bandwidth.

So this game includes the U-Wing, a starfighter class that I had never even heard of before, but it doesn't include one of the coolest classic Star Wars starfighters, the B-Wing... my favorite starfighter tank? Ugh. It had better be included in an eventual expansion or I will be ticked off. But even with that unfortunate oversight I am still *extremely* happy to see a new Star Wars battle flight sim; the lack of anyone releasing *any* of this genre of game for literally *decades* means I have been stuck still playing X-Wing vs TIE-Fighter from 1998. (And I most definitely *do* still play XvT.) And just last month I even got a new Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One joystick and throttle assembly for playing MechWarrior V... what perfect timing!

So my thoughts so far on SW:S: I generally like it, but I’ve spent more time remapping everything (both keyboard and joystick) to better match the old DOS X-Wing flight control style than playing to game itself. The preload-out configuration of from the DOS X-Wing series is still the most natural and intuitive flight system. The overall play style seem a bit Battlefront 2. I’d say it sort of 50% Battlefront 2, 30% Rogue Squadron, and 20% the X-Wing Trilogy. Personally, I would have like that to be flipped, 50% X-Wing, 30% Rogue Squadron, and only 20% Battlefront 2. I wish the story mode went with a Tour of Duty campaign style (from the X-Wing series) vs the Battlefront 2 story style. Maybe that changes later. I do like SW:S, but there’s no way around it, the X-Wing Trilogy is still a better Starfighter Simulator. Among the bigger beefs I’ve got with SW:S, too few playable Starfighter types. Joystick vs XBOX game pad: The game pad definitely gives more commands at your fingertips without having to use the keyboard, but the analog thumb D-pads just don’t feel as natural as a flightstick/joystick for flight control. But you don’t need the keyboard as much, if at all. Joystick: Using a joystick feels much more natural and gives much better fine movement control, you don’t over or under do your pitch and yaw adjustments *nearly* as much with a joystick. But you’ll likely need to take advantage of the keyboard much more (unless you’ve got a joystick with a LOT of programmable/mappable buttons). So if you’d rather have better general flight control; joystick, hands down. If you’d rather be able to ditch needing a keyboard for commands, XBOX game pad. So all and all I’m currently giving it an 8 out of 10 on a curve system with the X-Wing Trilogy been the relative 10 on the scale.

As someone who grew up with X-Wing, I am seeing cockpit elements that indicates this shares a LOT of elements with that ancient classic. Managing your power in the heat of battle, choosing on the fly the right balance of speed, firepower, and protection. AND GUESS WHAT?? I can tell that they incorporated that in those OG games, the fact that TIEs have NO SHIELDS! That's something that no modern games seem to acknowledge. You can tell because the X-Wing cockpit has meters for Engines, Lasers, and Shields, and the TIE has just Engines and Lasers! Nice work, EA. Now just don't shit the bed, please.

Battlefront 2015 had a shield ability for x wings and battlefront 2 has shields incorporated into the health bar, basically as extra health while TIEs don't have shields. Pretty sure the vulture droids dont have shields either but might be wrong on that
