This was a really excellent choice by the show. Not only did they have the clones overthrow a Jedi as a direct precursor to Order 66, they chose and shaped a Jedi for this fight who is uniquely suited for combat against multiple Force-blind opponents. Pong Krell has two sets of limbs and uses two double-bladed lightsabers, which would allow him to directly survive, at least initially, the hailstorm of blasterfire that took down all the Jedi in Revenge of the Sith. Beyond that, the contempt he shows for the clones, even as he benefits from their inherent respect for Jedi, makes us really badly want to see him lose. Good writing.

You know what I noticed, though? Even though he has two pairs of arms, he seems to rarely actually use his other arms when wielding his lightsabers. Mostly, he seems to just use one arm per lightsaber, even when twirling then.

@@MarsellusWallace That’s a very good observation. Even though he’s got two double-blades lightsabers here, he barely does any deflection at all. This is more of a “walking between the raindrops” situation than it is a “catching the rain” situation. He evaded or simply ignores almost the entirety of the blasterfire and seems to only cut with one blade at a time instead of killing multiple clones at once. I wonder why? Maybe the animation was too costly or complicated. Still love the writing though.

Actually something I've noticed is that once order 66 was given the majority of clones' strategy for killing jedi was actually to continually shoot from multiple directions until its point blank range so the jedi doesn't have time to block the blaster bolts even if it increases the clone fatalities

Pong Krell is one of my favorite characters. Especially because of a few particular things about him. First you can tell he's been influenced by Sidious and may have been auditioning as apprentice. 1. "it's treason then" 2. "He and Palpatine lightsabers sound the same when flourishing 3. Double-backward stab through the chest like Palpatine did to kill Savage Oppress. 4. He shares the same "Sadistic Glee" laugh as Sidious, drunken with new power from the dark side.

And it’s very likely that Sidious manipulated events to have Krell test his mettle against the clones to see how well Order 66 would realistically work out. He likely understood that Krell was a dangerous and ferocious Jedi that could be used as a good test subject/disciple depending on how it worked out. If he survived, then the Jedi gained a new powerful enemy. If he was captured/killed, then Palps would be vindicated about the effectiveness of the clones in dealing with the Jedi. Sure, Krell may have believed that he’d be serving Dooku’s will per his admission to Rex, but remember, Dooku primarily did Sidious’ bidding during the Clone Wars

They are described as being little more than blurs of light during lightsaber combat or in battles against non Jedi. They only show you from pong krels point of view. Honestly, that might have to be something more akin to his species. You see in this fight he swings and controls both his staffs with ease, even going as far as constantly switching which of his four arms are wielding them. I always felt this arc was the saddest in the Clone Wars (even including the Trial of Ahsoka). In my opinion, the Clones themselves were the main characters of the series; it humanized and individualized them, and gave us normal people to relate to in the wars of the space wizards. Tbf he was at a tactical disadvantage if he had continued the engagement on the airbase, due to the open spaces and high quantity of clones. Retreating to the jungle was the smarter play due to how hostile it had proven to be to clones already, and the fact that he could engage platoons one at a time, since they wouldn't know where to find him, and would split up their search efforts. How he choked that kind of tactical advantage, I'll never know.

I know his character is made to be disliked but I can’t help but love the way he wipes out the clones when they engage him. The malevolent sound of his lightsabers whirling, his incredible reach when lashing out, the way the lightsabers just seem to cover his body turning him into a devilish whirlwind that clears out anything that gets near. It’s beautiful and ridiculously well made.

Also, he was kinda right about not trusting in the clones. In the end, they were designed to kill every Jedi, so if Krell was more of a negotiator and less of a brute, he might have warned the entire order about his concerns of the clone army, preventing the Jedi's destruction.
