While reviewing the Holiday Special was fun, I don't think it would make sense to postpone this one further by delving into SNL skits for 20 minutes... So let's take a look at Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back! Which it seems likely a hell of a lot of people are going to be doing, due to recent circumstances...

Best movie and story of the entire saga. And Lucas never managed to recapture the same masterpiece magic again in my opinion. Kurtz and Kershner combined to save Lucas's ass. Great writing, crisp script, kick ass directing and solid character development with dark colors and tone sealed the victory of this one, and resulted in international audiences genuinely caring and wondering worriedly about the fate of the characters by the end of the film.

Kurtz, Kershner and add Kasdan. Lucas was more hands off here because I believe he was also working with Spielberg developing Indiana Jones at the same time; this was 1980, Raiders was 1981, so yeah, too much going on. The characters were allowed to breathe in Empire, which also helped. Also, IMO, Kasdan did not help The Force Awakens (though JJ Abrams also cowrote along with Michael Arndt). Either way, Empire will always be my personal favorite of all 9 main films.

Carrie was amazingly intelligent and refreshingly blunt--but also so incredibly charming and endearing while being humble and honest about her own flaws. Most people don't get past that she was a beautiful woman in a gold bikini, but she was truly a rare human being. The world is darker for her loss.

From what I can tell, when he said "I can't believe it." and Yoda response with "That is why you failed." was not because that he didn't believe that it was passable to do powerful feats with the force but more that he didn't believe that HE could do it. Like "Every one else is capable of but, there is no way I can do that."

Acharged Yeah it's weird. I wonder what he hates so much about Empire.
@msnorringtonsims6536
@msnorringtonsims6536 7 жыл бұрын
I'm actually not surprised that he apologized. Aside from seeming to have no idea what actually makes a movie 'good' or what fans really love about Star Wars, if you look back at the initial reviews of Empire, they weren't very positive. Most critics thought it was a poor followup and a disappointment. They didn't like the darker tone and thought much of it was a retread, believe it or not. It got a lot of shit and considering how wishy washy Lucas is, of course he'd follow suit and say it was bad. The same way he claimed to have no hand in how the Holiday Special came out *eyeroll* Also, back then, there were fewer critics to round out the actual viewing public so what they often said about a movie, didn't really reflect how the average person felt about a film. It wasn't until years went by, that the opinion of Empire as the best in the series grew. It was actual a sleeper hit. I remember growing up in the 80s and just taking it for granted. I honestly watched it almost every weekend of my life and had no idea how good it was. I just liked it. It wasnt until the 90s when common fans could connect via the internet that it became the united belief and shared understanding of how good a film it actually is. As for what Lucas hates about the movie, it's pretty obvious: it's the film he had the least amount to do with. It's someone else's baby. Sure, some of his original ideas are in there, his characters, his concepts (which admittedly is his core strength), it's someone else's story. Someone else was able to take his simplistic (yet engaging and forward thinking) hero's journey and refine it into a work of art. It's no wonder he resent the fact that of all the Star Wars films, the fan favorite is the one he didn't actually create.

The wrecked C3PO on Chewbacca's back is the only time in the original trilogy that Vader sees one of his former Droids. Vader should've approached C3PO and said _"The rebels never told you who created you"._ *"They said the Republic made me and that you destroyed them".* _"No, I am your creator"_ *"Perplexing, that's improbable"* _"Search your hard drives you know it to be true"_ *ANI!*

My thoughts on actors kinda differ. To me, once an actor is done with movies and/or entertaining you, then they are essentially dead to you. I can enjoy an actor in a movie, but after a few years if news comes out that they died then nothing really changes. You weren't going to get anything from them anyways. They still exist where you last saw them, but no more no less.

You know, I actually pretty well understand the despecialized editions for ANH (space battle additions being great in ANH aside)and Jedi, if only for a couple added lines of dialogue in Jedi and a certain force ghost, but I think the Empire SE is actually probably the best one. There's a few bits like the Wampa or giving Boba a clone voice that didn't need to be added, but things like the additions to the structure of Cloud City, the windows, seeing the citizens warned about the Empire, and that sort of update worked really well and didn't look out of place. Also, really speech at the end Decker. It's one I really needed at the start of this year.

The most funny "rumor" from the originals must be the one Fisher started herself. (allthough a young girl with a new big stack of shiny money could do this) During the Jabbas palaceshoots her and fellow actress Femi Taylor (the Twi'leak chick who gets eaten) who btw thought she had signd up for a pornmovie) didnt have much to do so they did what most of the alienactors did, smoked pot and was high as hell. Witch make Fishers acting in that place so much more funny as she prob thinks the room is spinning and the aliens are real. And her "Im here!" wasnt really part of the script. It just sounds like a momentthing....

codafett Agreed, while I despise The Phantom Menace and Attack of The Clones is mostly bad, Revenge of the Sith does have redeeming qualities. I'm not saying he should praise it or hate just be real and recognize the good when you see it and also point out the bad when you see it. Basically don't be an OT purist who thinks other than the originals is utter garbage.

Meh The Phantom Menace is okay by my standings but people took a massive load on it so much that when I decided to watch to again I felt like the movie was actually amazing. Then I took a step back, I read the script, the script sucks, the story the movie tells however.. doesn't, really. I'm not saying the movie used all the elements to there full potential and granted it's probably not going to move up too much in my ranking. Personally though, I think this one's extremely underrated and not just for the flashy new effects and moments people tend to like from this one. The movie had a lot of cool.. might I dare exclaim deep things to say in it that often get overlooked.

Lucas had Leigh Brackett--an author, screenwriter, and creator of one of two characters (Eric John Stark) Han Solo is based on--write the first draft of the screenplay. After her death, he wrote a second draft and subsequently had Lawrence Kasdan help him on the shooting script. As Lucas relates in his foreword to the most recent reprint of Brackett's last novel, The Reavers of Skaith, although he took the script in a different direction from where the dying Brackett went in her draft, he did keep many of her ideas throughout the process. Interestingly the Tauntauns are based on Martian draught lizards Brackett had Stark ride in her first story featuring him, Queen of the Martian Catacombs.

I give this film 5 "Bite the wax tadpoles" out of 5! Also, great review, Decker. I'm on board with what you exclaimed at the end about the death of movie actors. Very genuine and touching message.

About saying that testing the carbon freeze on some one with plot armor, it is good to do that when the one you want to catch has just a good plot armor.

Hey Decker here is something you can use for some jokes in your ROTJ review the fact that Wedge Antilles voice is different in each film in Star Wars he was dubbed over by David Ankrum in Empire the Actor Denis Lawson did his best American impression and in Jedi Lawson used his regular voice. Also Lawson is Ewan Macgregor's Uncle.
