as a final question on my ‪@theorytalks483‬ episode with ‪@sadiapsychology‬ I asked her what her thoughts were on the latest drama in Star Wars where a new director for the Rey movie, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, claims it's time for a woman to shape Star Wars, as well as the response from those who can't allow others to have an opinion different than theirs.
Here's what Sadia has to say, as well as what I have to say.

I'm a longtime female Star Wars fan, who grew up with the entire original trilogy. I loved how Leia wasn't portrayed as just some damsel in distress, and how she held her own with Luke and Han, but never overshadowed them. They all worked together. 100% agree, we need quality stories and production, with the right people for the jobs (regardless of gender), but without these agendas.

Honestly, the best trios in Star Wars are Padme/Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Leia, Luke, Han. Simply because there's only one woman doesn't mean she gets overshadowed or goes as a third wheel. Quite the opposite, the three women named are some of the strongest and best characters in Star Wars. I wish more people could see what you said. Star Wars doesn't need agendas, it needs the right people who want to tell great stories.

I was about to say, isn’t it crazy that they act like women weren’t presented well in Star Wars before Disney, when Leia is the literal face of the Rebellion, and Padme proved to be one of the only people who stood up against injustice in the Republic? Not to mention that the most beloved character across Star Wars is Ahsoka Tano. All three of them were made before Disney got their talons on Star Wars.

Also grabbing a blaster from Luke's hand and shooting storm troopers. Watching a woman do that at the age of 7 blew my mind. I had grown up on western's and war movies that my parents watched. It was the first time that I saw a woman in a movie who wasn't a victim and who actively participated in her own self defense. TBH, the times since then in the past 40 years that has only happened a handful of times in a way that was believable.

The way I see it, when it comes to leading female roles in movies, it's all about subtlety. What made Princess Leia such a great character in the Original Trilogy is that her being a princess didn't affect the way she developed as a character. Once example where directors didn't do such a good job at this is in Avengers Endgame. That scene where they are playing keep-away with the Infinity Gauntlet and it was the female roles turn to keep it away. The Russo brothers could have made it more fluid by having the Gauntlet seamlessly pass to them without the whole line-up act.

Yeah, I agree. That whole Avengers Endgame scene was cringe and it screamed “Feminism”. I don’t think it was the Russo’s fault, either. They were only the Directors, not Screenwriters. But as soon as Marvel introduced that crap, you just knew (or at least had a feeling) where they were going to go with it.. And now, we don’t have the MCU. We have the M-She-U.

The sequels did great numbers because star wars is one the biggest franchises of all time and they used the og characters that everyone love with a passion to sell it when I saw rise of skywalker in theaters the whole theater booed the Rey Skywalker part at the end some even walked out I wonder if the new rey movie will do massive numbers now that the og characters are dead and with the bad reputation that Disney has now compared to back then.

@@GothPaoki wonder woman is a good example of a comic book movie, traditionally "male" space successfully appealing to both and making oodles of cash. Executives are happy to piss off and lose 20% of male audience tickets if they add 40% or more female tickets sold. But yeah, I feel like the most important and critical failure is the tone, not only did she say it ambiguously where it seems like she's trying to say there's no female characters in star wars... which is insane... But it's openly combative and inaccurate if she was talking about the directors chair which has also had a few women at the helm And unlike marvel and tons of other spaces, specifically KK herself was in charge of the C-suite at lucasfilm. Females have had plenty a fair shake in the Star wars universe and arguably more chances than most. In fact post-obi wan wasn't there a general suggestion from the fan base they should make a Leia series to cover her assent in the rebellion in live action?!?! They're sad the fan base doesn't cheer it's female characters with Barbie and Wonder Woman levels of enthusiasm But honestly I think they're just miffed that the fan base isn't populated with more women. Sadly nothing that's been attempted so far has helped grow that %, and they need to look harder at themselves and their role in those failures, and less blaming the fan base for not growing into something they never gave good soil with which to do that.

Im so confused with making Star Wars a boy thing from the get go. My first grown up movie was Star Wars that my brother took me too. I absolutely loved it! I got my first crush in Solo and was absolutely empowered by Leia. I always wanted to play with cars and action figures young but being a girl I only had baby dolls or Barbie. Now i liked Barbies but Star Wars with Leia gave me the ability to have a gun, and a millennium falcon. Leia wore couture gowns and knew how to kick ass. We had never really had that before. The thing is, there’s nothing wrong with being an activist. There’s something wrong with pretending to be an activist and using it as an excuse to generalize and disrespect men. Women like KK give feminists a bad name, and there are people who aren’t sexist, in this case, but don’t know what words to use right away when we see these… unnaturally powerful female characters, for example, in films in general. I was like that, something felt off about certain Marvel movies and I struggled to put it into words, but I knew something was bugging me and until I finally realized words like ‘unnatural’, ‘forced’ or ‘exploitation’ resonated well with what I felt instead of getting angry or something, I kept my mouth shut for the most part. I do wonder if Theory is struggling to find the right words a little when he talks about this stuff, though. That’s the vibe I get, anyway, when he says his input on the state of things. No offense, and I don’t blame him either way.

There is a problem with activists. It starts with being an activist for a real problem. Then it gets solved. Then the first thing the activist says is " There is so much more work to be done" which is just shifting the goal post so they can continue being an activist. It eventually gets to the point where the activist is just virtue signaling and being obnoxious for continued attention.

Luke is still a great character who fails alot and has to train hard and learn. He also has a realistic and belivable backstory to back up the things he can do. He is far from perfect, and well written. If you take Rey who as a scrap collector suddenly knows how to fly and repair ships, overpowers a Sith/Jedi's mind tricks besides learning of thr force a day ago. And even wins and knows how to use a lightsaber better then a guy trained since childhood. Not to mention going futher she booth saves herself, trains herself and just does force feats rivaling beings like Yoda with zero guidance or actual forcecpractice. Luke manages to barely levitate a rock, learns basic lightsaber combat. Loses to Vader and loses a hand because of it. Has to train hard to come back, and face a conflicted Vader. As a determent one would have beaten him again. And Vader had to save him from the emperor, because realism. It made all he did meaningful and relatable. A perfect being knowing everything was not.

Being a writer myself I know this very well lol. But just so people don’t take what you said out of context: I am in the process of writing a book about struggle through a tough thing and I’m writing it in a way to where it’s a big big metaphor for something that I went through last year (I was practically paralyzed). Anyways it was a huge struggle and I started writing the book as an escape from that and little did I know that what was happening to the character in the book, was also happening to me in real life. And I had no idea until later on so to restate. You’re okay if you write the story around yourself, but it’s not okay if you write it for yourself. I made it to help people get through things. She’s (the director) is making this to prove that “a woman can do it”. And for herself to be the “first ever female director” instead of making it for other people to enjoy or relate to. She’s doing that rather than the reason Stan Lee made marvel (rip) or George Lucas made Star Wars. I just wanted to specify that.

Nobody that I knew really considered themselves "fans" back then either, the fans thing is more of the current culture kool-aid stuff, with everybody needing to identify AS something and be in their little box. But no one would laugh at you for watching those films, from my experience, back then. And I remember when those movies would air on cable, it would turn into this HUGE event everyone would tune into to watch on TV, those days are gone now, sadly.

As a woman who's been a fan since i was a kid, i remember when it wasn't popular. Boys liked SW. Girls got made fun of for liking SW. That's my experience. And you know who made fun of me? Other girls. Boys didn't gatekeep, but the mean girls did alienate, and the neutral girls were indifferent. Thats just my experience. I think a couple boys tried to gatekeep, but it wasnt as big a deal. Then in high school, when ep 7 was coming out, i was overwhelmed by how many female fans i encountered after it came out. At first i thought it was great. (I had kinda hoped for a female alien jedi main character for a long time, because that was a side of Star Wars unexplored in the live action movies. Aliens and females were usually side characters, and Leia and Padme were polititians, not Jedi. When i was ten, i wrote a fanfiction about a female twi-lek slave who escaped from Jaba's palace and became a jedi, proving her race wasn't submissive or weak.) Anyway, some of the female fans who came out during ep 7 were legit. like, the new movie with its new hype made it feel safe to be a female fan, and those few girls were cool. They had their criticisms about the new movies, just like i did. But the fandom girls. The fan girls, who drooled over Kylo Ren and said Rey was their favorite character...they had no criticisms. No love or loyalty for the old material. Their preferences were as maliable as perpetually fresh clay. And you know what, i encountered life long male fans who had no preferences either. They were usually more liberal minded though. Only hard core SW fans had a problem with the new movies.

No disrespect theory I’m a huge fan but I do have to say, you claim you are sick of the Star Wars politics and you are just over it, much like most of us are. The vast majority of people are extremely upset with how Star Wars has been treated including me. But You say you are going to focus on more George Lucas Star Wars and legends content but you kinda don’t. I feel like every time I come to this channel it’s the same thing low key. We know this channel will make money till the end of time because you have created something great and you deserve it, you earned it and I respect you for that. But you say you don’t care about this political stuff then why is it you always talk about it in a large majority of your videos. I understand u r frustrated like many of us. But you can still choose to focus on the lore we both care about. If you continue to cover the political side of Star Wars you will only bring in the people that are here for that topic, then wonder why your whole comment section is full of people painting you as a political bad guy. Look at the channels that’s are only lore focused, yea they don’t get insane views but you say you don’t really care about that. I think your lore videos dropped in views simply because you don’t make them like you used too. And as frequent. I’m not saying you need to make insane quality stories and edits that are expensive, just hop on the mic and tell us a story like you used too years ago. There’s still so much untouched legends content we would all love to see and I’m sure u would love to make. You can spend the time you take on political stuff and put it into lore and lore only. I think this channel was founded upon the aspects of lore and now it’s more like a pop culture channel. Mostly because that’s the subject you tend to cover a lot. But if you simply stop covering the politics and cover more lore and story then I think it would be a good thing, and you will start seeing the real fans that are here for you and your story telling, and not so much the passer by Star Wars “fans”. I’m here for you brother and there are many of your fans who are too. We just miss the old theory who didn’t concern himself with the social issues in starwars but just released back to back banger lore stories. Yes of course it’s important to post videos like this showing the issues with Star Wars. You are the biggest channel on the website so it’s important to speak out on the horrible things they are doing to Star Wars and the characters we all love. Yes I want you to voice your opinion on the atrocities that have been put on the brand. But try and not make it most of what the channel is about with every other video. I think that’s why most people put you in a bad light because that’s what it appears to be from the outside. There’s a reason there’s only 1 Star Wars Theory out there and that’s because your talents are unmatched. I know, and I’m sure many of your fans know that you are so much better then just a current event reporter. Many of us remember the golden days of theories stories and break downs and that’s all I’m asking for. Yes drop us some news on the current state of Star Wars but just don’t forget there’s so much more to Star Wars then just the politics. You can still go back to your routes and give us the lore we love, there’s so so so much in legends and EU content that people would love to hear about, more then anyone could even fathom covering 100%. Still I think you are the best Star Wars creator on the platform and you do do great work im not trying to take that away from you. You do fantastic work. But idk I’m just a guy on the internet. The problem I think with modern Star Wars is that it used to be an ESCAPE from the real issues of the world. The story did touch on some heavier topics, but because the story was the main focus and it was dressed up as a fun fantasy in space, it never bothered anyone. You could just look past it and enjoy the ride where friendship and goodness of the people triumph over evil. Now however, the story and the characters take the backseat as we are spoon fed these statements of what is right and wrong in the world today. It's baffling that they still continue down this path, when they've seen that it doesn't work and it's frustrating to see this beloved franchise being destroyed by these people who do not care about this franchise in the first place.

I think the psychologist woman is pretty incorrect about this idea of guys becoming drastically more feminine. I’m in a pretty left wing, progressive city in the uk and even here the vast majority of guys just dress pretty normally, certainly not ‘androgynous’ like she suggests. Often in my experience these quite effeminate guys are also pretty attractive to women.

The psychologic’s take is completely bogus here tho. She claims women like this new director for the Rey movie just want to be victims. That they don’t have real issues besides first world problems. But this director Disney hired is a Pakistani woman who has made a career on fighting the practice of honor killings in her country. For those who don’t know, honor killings are when a woman’s own family or spouse KILLS said woman because she has been raped. They see it as a shame on their family that the woman has to DIE over. That psychologist spoke on something without knowing the full context and just made a fool of themselves. As has everyone else who is hating on this new director.

I feel like what happened was, geek culture got big in the 2000s and all the suits got involved with these properties and started retrofitting the problems they faced in the business world - gender equality, representation etc - onto the fandoms, guilt tripping newbies, but it never existed before they brought it. Men never had a problem with female leads in films (terminator, Alien) games (tomb raider) or behind the camera (my entire generation loved Point Break, we didn’t scoff because a woman directed it). Basically geek culture got hijacked by big money types and mainstream normies who never understood or cared for it before. It’s gone.

The problem is, they are filling the writers room with "yes men/women" who are "young and enthusiastic" (and idealistic) and don't have the fucking faintest about what actually makes a good story. Or at least good characters. They can be pushed, manipulated, and shaped by the powers at be to being a mouthpiece. They don't grasp the origins, meaning, and purpose behind the original material, and it only becomes a dressing, a lampshade for gender-based shaming or virtue-signaling. Star Wars, among many other things, was a heavy inspiration for me becoming a writer. There were so many great characters, both male and female. I loved pretty much all of them. I've been writing for over 20 years because of that. I *dreamed* to write for Star Wars at one point. It would still be my dream to write a Star Wars novel or series. I devoured the movies, games, and books. REad and watched and played them over and over again. I wore out copies of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I've gone on to write my own stories in that universe. (Completely original characters and such, without touching on cannon except very vaguely way on the periphery.) Men, women, humans, aliens of all kinds of species. All of them cool, interesting, unique, strong but also vulnerable, flawed, with painful struggles. Watching them go through hell, but slowly clawing their way back up to their feet, rising to the occasion have been some of my favorite moments in writing and story. And very few have gotten to share in those stories. And the House of Mouse just can't seem to get it together. Sorry for the long rambling rant.

Sure I watched it with my little brother but I loved it no matter what, regardless if I was a girl. My friends are the same way. I mean, that's just me. Seeing Ahsoka as a little kid, I wanted to be like her. I didn't think much about it. I also looked up to Obi-Wan regardless if he was a man or not. What matters is that characters are solid and strong to tell a story.

Theory, I think sensitivity matters just as keeping an open mind. Just because she is a qualified psychologist it doesn't mean her inputs are entirely true. What she says isn't fact. She is a scientist in a way and you and I both know they provide THEORIES and they can be wrong. Misogyny does exist everywhere and it is prevalent in today's society. Systematically and sometimes even blatantly. Acknowledging that women don't have the same opportunities as men is a fact and always has been. Women are STILL sexualized, in constant fear of being harassed or r*ped, not getting getting a job because the fact that she is a woman, etc. A lot of this stems from misogyny and toxic masculinity. These are things a man won't typically be in the position of. While I don't agree with Disney 99% of the time, this should not be used as an opportunity to attack the political issues of the western world and the constant fact that women are oppressed. I just don't find it right that you call them sensitive or victimizers but then bring up the fact that you got bullied bc you were a man and loved Star Wars. No offense, but it is hypocritical. The real issue here is WRITING and Disney hopping on political trends and using it as a way to push for more viewers. It's not women, it's not the western world, it is and always will be Disney. You mention in order for us to progress as a society we have to focus on who we are as people but gender is a integral part of who we are as people. Keeping other's experiences in mind is so important to who we are. I don't think that is what you are doing entirely with your channel. As a result, I feel that even when deny it, you are slowly losing your channel to misogyny and toxic masculinity.

I take issue more with what she started saying about the young men in the class she had being androgynous and ‘not being men that women will desire’ That’s pretty judgemental for a therapist for one thing. Secondly, we should be happy we live in a society in which people are free to express themselves however they like (for the most part) and third of all, it’s nothing new. It’s just the cycles of fashion that come and go. Look at the ‘New Romantic’ look of the 80’s. Those guys are now 50-60 and I imagine the majority of them are married with children. I’m not calling her credentials into question or anything but I don’t quite agree with the way she expressed that. Maybe it’s out of context, I’ll listen to the whole thing at some point.

I am a huge Star Wars. I love George Lucas's Star Wars movies wonderful characters, developed arcs, and well written stories. The Expanded Universe books and video games are amazing and gave us so much lore. Disney Star Wars has been choppy on its story telling. The Sequel Trilogy needed to honor George's Legacy characters from both the Original and Prequel Trilogies. At the sametime it needed to give Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo complete story arcs were we see then learn, develop, and reach their prime. Rogue One, Andor, Tales Of The Jedi, The Mandalorian seasons 1-2, and Din, Luke, and Grogu's appearance in The Book Of Boba Fett are excellent. I wish Obi-Wan Kenobi had followed John Jackson Millers's book more closely, Tamera Morrison had got to play prime Boba Fett in his series, and The Mandalorian season 3 story arches flowed well. Jedi Fallon Order and Jedi Survivor are perfect. George Lucas made Star Wars for "children, young teens, and the children in all of us." The heroes of Star Wars have always been men and women. For Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to say there have been no women before her shaping Star Wars is nonscence. Marica Lucas helped George write drafts and was one of three film editors on A New Hope. Carrie Fisher is the fiesty princess who helps with her own rescue. Leigh Brackett wrote the first draft of the Empire Strikes back. Each trilogy has groups of three leads - Luke, Leia, and Han or Anakin, Padme, and Obi-Wan. In the Expended Universe Mara, Kyle, Jaina, Jacen, ex cedera. As for woman director Brice Dallas Howard has already give us amazing Star Wars episodes and Deborah Chow gave us the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Seven out of ten people in the Storybook Group are women. Kathleen Kennedy has been the president of Lucasfilm for eleven years. The balance of women being involved in Star Wars never was an issue. The focus has always been on well written stories. Psychologist Sadia Khan did not critque Sharmeen Obiad-Chanioy in this video. She insulted all women from all Western cultures. As for Star wars fan ratios - World Wide 1 in 4 people are Star Wars fans, North America has the most fans with all other hemispheres are not far behind on love of Star Wars, and of those fans 59.33 men and 40.67 women. May the Force be with us all.

I can say 100% as a female, I grew up watching all the sci fi stuff my dad loved, and I ended up loving it just as much as he did. I was the only girl in all my year level's from middle school to high school, that watched SW and all other comic book and sci fi related stuff and when other kids found out, I got bashed for it. I was out casted simply because I liked something that everyone else thought was nerdy and uncool, but I never gave up on my love for the genre. Growing up watching the Original Trilogy on VHS, made a huge impact on me, and the movies mean so much to me even more as an adult. Which is why I'm so saddened and upset with what Disney has done to it, and continuing to do to it, it enrages me when I give certain opinions about what Disney has done to SW that is something so beloved by so many people, and still people that claim to be SW fans, like to tell me off, saying I should get over it and stop being in denial, I should state I do Not consider the sequel trilogy as part of SW, and I do not agree with the direction they are going. George Lucas owned all the merchandise rights after the first film and Star Wars has generated over 12 billion in merchandise sales versus 9.4 billion in Box office.") Prior to this, Disney was profiting from "princess" merchandising...as in Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and the such. They originally sought to market to the boys by buying properties that were overwhelmingly consumed by young males. Obviously, these ips have been subverted to replacing the male characters with female counterparts. My main point is the concept of Carl Jung's archetypes- "the original pattern or model of which all things of the same type are representations or copies". Throughout human history there are myths and legends that present archetypes be it Hercules, Hera, Thor to all the bigger than life characters that inspire people. "Archetypes are universal, inborn models of people, behaviors, and personalities that play a role in influencing human behavior. Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung's theory suggested that these archetypes were archaic forms of innate human knowledge passed down from our ancestors." Rock stars, sports stars, celebrities and film stars can all be considered archetypes. I interpret Jung's theory to conclude that they represent ideals for inspiration people espouse to inspire for improvement. That's a huge part of why people idolize others and have heroes. However, there are male archetypes and there are female archetypes. What Dr. Sadia Kahn points out "Women don't watch Star Wars" has to do with this whole archetype framework. It might be more accurate to say more men than women watch Star Wars....or Marvel movies. The utter failure of the film The Mavels might be attributed to the concept that you have archetypes that aimed to appeal to certain segment of the population that are in a minority. Or is it the aim to convince males to aspire to male archetypes played by females? Getting my point? I first began to ponder this when women's bodybuilding first gained notoriety and Frank Zane noted there wasn't an archetype for it....well, there certainly is now. It really comes down to understanding your audience and what they aspire to. Dr. Kahn's comment of how the younger males now look so androgynous shows the impact that these films have on culture.

I am a female and I admit I did not get into Star Wars movies or any of it until the new movie with Rey came out out. However I still grew up with Star Wars in my house, and had to watch the old movies and the prequels over and over so it was nothing new to me. I just didn’t get it until I got older. I was intrigued with Rey .. and then disappointed with the end lol but hey I still enjoy all the other movies now. 🤷‍♀️

There's a big difference between, "Kids are going to feel uncomfortable. They have to, or they'll never learn, or become disciplined." and "I enjoy making kids feel uncomfortable." It's always possible the quote I'm hearing is taken out of context, but what has Disney done to earn my benefit of the doubt?

Here is a take, why can’t her message of activism be about anti war, or environment, or something else? Nobody cares about gender activism, everyone is equal in the west gender wise. I’m not talking trans as some people have issues there. The Middle East where she is seeing insane inequality is different than how the rest of the world works. Activism is not going to change how that situation has unfolded. Those people do not listen to reason, only war and death. Putting some gender activism in film will not change those places because it will just be banned. Do not make content for those who won’t watch it. Make content for the people that enjoy it. Do not have an attitude like “I love making people uncomfortable”, the whole rian Johnson messing up fandom by taking a dump on Luke’s legacy was terrible and I think Disney needs to be careful if they want future Star Wars stuff to succeed

Fun fact: Star Wars wasn't popular in the 90s. I remember my mom giving me the 90s version of the Star Wars VHS box set and I remember the vibe of it being this obscure thing. Being a 90s baby I can confirm that Star Wars wasn't popular back in the day and what we're seeing now is a bandwagon hopping party aka a fad. 😒

I'm a 90s kid too but my experience was much different. My dad introduced me to Star Wars and me a few of my friends and most of my cousin's were really into it. It was still considered nerdy I think and it probably always will lol unlike something like gaming which used to be nerdy but now is just a normal thing

I lost friends in high school for enjoying things like Star Wars, Video Games, Anime, and in general enjoying more intellectual things over things like sports. (Not saying sports doesn't take intellect, because I know it does, just a frame reference). Right when I quit playing soccer and started playing video games, and working to become a 3D generalist game designer, I lost my best friend. It was also due to the fact that I didn't and still don't do drugs and didn't and still don't drink, that also was a factor, but a lot of it was that I wasn't considered a "cool" kid since I wasn't out all night ruining my life, wasn't interested in sports, and although I wasn't fat, I didn't exactly have a 12 pack. I isolated myself for the most part, didn't trust anyone, and couldn't take about the things I enjoyed to ANYONE. No one would care to listen, I even felt like an annoyance trying to talk to my parents about what I enjoyed sometimes. And now, anyone can openly enjoy anything. It feels almost unfair to an extent. I went through hell as to not conform to the majority, and now people can just do it. It's great that they can, but it feels so unfair. Thankfully I found my place in college for game design, with like-minded outcast all around me. Everyone always wants to play the victim when nothing even happened, when to others terrible things happened, and they have the right to play the victim. I don't even consider myself a victim, what happened to me was a consequence of standing my ground, and I have and will continue to reap the rewards of that the rest of my life. Although it's something as simple as my entertainment and hobby choice, it really grew my determination to not conform just because it's popular, and that has helped me as not just a Man facing a terrible man hating world, but also it strengthened my resolve to not conform to the world as a Christian. It may be easier to conform, but then you are just like everyone else. I enjoy many things because they aren't popular, I have no interest in being like everyone else, and day by day I look for others like me to enjoy this life with. I've found many great friends because of my unpopular interests, and hopefully someday soon I will find a woman romantically that can accept me the same way my friends and family do. People suck, bad things happen, cry through it and move on.

Man, I used to tune into this channel so often! Loved how this dude was breaking down theories and making his own fire content!! And the reviews were tough, but honest. There was also a lot of care and patience because we wanted better. But recently, it feels so negative here. Like we are happy to recieve trash because it us something to debate, tear down, and get clicks. Feels like Geeks and Gamers or Critical Drinker. I know negativity and divisive politics gets more clicks, but this used to be my escape, my happy place lol. Star Wars has always been very political, but the reviews and breakdowns have taken on a political life of their own now. Review bros are now being looked at as political thought leaders because "woke" has been rebranded as a dog whistle to attract angry people who care more about dunking on liberals, women, and minorities than getting a good movie or show. I will bever forget the reaction people gave when they saw a black storm trooper. At that point, I knew we were struggling as a fan base.

Lol this woman's take on "Western Women" victim hood is laughable. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is from Pakistan....hardly the west. She's also made (pretty damn good) films about the actual gender-based oppression there and gotten two Oscar's for her trouble. Will she bring that to Star Wars? I have no idea. I will say that nobody gave a shit about the fact that she directed Mrs. Marvel for Disney Plus. For all of the issues that show had, directing wasn't one of them. I also didn't find that project to be heavy handed at all politically. So she said she's bringing a female perspective. So what. Should story be the primary focus? Of course it should. But is she not allowed to celebrate and be proud that she's the first to do something? This is so overblown. Critical Drinker had a much more nuanced take on this.

There's another elephant in the room that I haven't heard anyone talk about -- she praises Kennedy and says "It's about time" as if the absence of female SW movie directors wasn't Kennedy's fault to begin with. Kennedy had five opportunities to hire women to direct Star Wars movies and she just didn't. Granted, there may have been pushback from Iger or Horn, but they allowed a no name like Rian Johnson, who's only qualifications seemed to be that "Kathy liked him." Someone like Rachel Talalay could have directed a decent Star Wars movie. I'm not sure how good at action Talalay herself is but there are a lot of women directing SciFi and Fantasy TV shows who love the genre and have actually made similar things before. I've been saying for years they should have had Jane Espenson write Episode VIII with someone like Talalay directing. Espenson has a background in SciFi and Fantasy TV (notably Torchwood and Once Upon a Time). She ALWAYS writes the backstory episode. She's always explaining mysteries and tying things together -- which is what you needed after the Force Awakens. I'm sure in her heart, Kennedy believes she supports women, but if her actions are anything to go by, it seems like her main goal transcends gender. It seems like she hires people who are LIKE HER, regardless of their gender. People who are Cinephiles and/or Activists, like Chinoy, and who either aren't nerds, or very mild nerds like Rian Johnson. People who prefer 1883 and The Offer to Lord of the Rings or Guardians of the Galaxy (not that that's a crime but Star Wars is first and foremost a nerd franchise; the world is full of good writers and directors who are also nerds). The fact that Kennedy would choose Chinoy, rather than female Star Wars directors she already has like Bryce Dallas Howard or Deborah Chow, kind of speaks volumes. It's not simply about women. It's about hiring the "right" women. It's about hiring activists and cinephiles, and if they're not nerds, "Eh, whatever."
