This is why I love Thrawn as a character. His tactics are gambits designed to confuse his enemies and give him the upper hand. Whether it's keeping a Clone-Wars-Era buzzdroid around for a rescue operation or some other unorthodox tactic, he doesn't fight by the same rules as other Imperial commanders. His plans are always evolving and changing, and that's probably one of the best things about him. The most recent book he appears in("Thrawn" by Timothy Zahn, his creator) does an excellent job of showing how his plans may not make sense at first but slowly fall into place.

Boisegang It's almost difficult to call his plans "gambits". That implies he has a lot to lose based on the tactics employed if somebody sees through them at any point. Thrawn usually so completely outwits his opponents that its not a question of him winning, but just how badly his enemy will lose depending on if they see through his machinations during the final act.

See, this is the sort of stuff Thrawn SHOULD be doing: fighting intergalactic fleet wars with MINING EQUIPMENT. This is what we love him for. THIS is where he really shines. Not chasing one ship full of teenage Main Characters around, going like, "I'll get you next time you meddling kids....or not, I don't seem to really care very much!" Maybe he's getting paid per hour, so he's like, eh, no rush... Plus he makes it clear no one in the Empire has a clue how to operate an EFFECTIVE counter-insurgency campaign, not even Thrawn. ... Sheesh, even W. (who wasn't exactly the sharpest tool) rethought his strategy, and he only (only...) lost for ten years before he thought, hm, maybe this isn't working, maybe I should change this... The thing about insurgencies is it really doesn't matter how many ships you destroy or fighters you kill, there will always be more as long as the public isn't with you. Did anyone read the manual?

Hate to break it to you, but Pablo Hildalgo (head of the Star wars story group) is of the opinion that Thrawn is just lucky and gambles a lot. As is Filoni (lead writer of Rebels) I'm not kidding.

I just realized something relating to the warships at the battle. The MC80s at Sluis Van were made as civilian ships, turned into warships, and then turned into cargo ships. Kinda funny to think about

The mole miners themselves never penetrated into the NR ships. It was just the plasma drills punching through that vented the ships.

I'm missing the part where the mole miners and tie fighters manage to avoid Rogue Squadron+the full force of the defensive perimiter they have to pass to get to the ships. Whats the point of a defensive perimiter like that if its so easily bypassed? Unless the graphic was wrong and the "civilian" ship was already passed?

They were disguised inside a cargo transport to slip past the defense. The shipyards had been pushed to capacity due to Thrawn constantly hitting New Republic fleets and a lot of ships were in dock for repairs. To Rouge Squadrons credit they did check out the freighter before they got Star Destroyers dropped on their heads.

docgonzobordel I'm pretty sure the Mon Calamari ships aren't _only_ for Calamari. The Alliance would've have won if they could only use one race to crew their most powerful battleship..

Thrawn put the New Republic in a no-win situation. Do nothing and he walks off with a huge part of their fleet. Activate the drills and they'll destroy their own ships. Either way they lose while Thrawn is, at worst, a little less successful. Either way the New Republic has less ships in its Navy while he increases his odds regardless. THAT is a true military genius.

Gigas0101 In space? Spacetroopers. I don't think, Astartes's conventional (yeah, bolters are conventional) weapons would work so good in space. Recoil would make them spin around. On the ground/ship deck? Deffinitely Astartes

The star wars "legends" is a whole lot better than the crap they put out now...Kylo Ren is about the worst main villain of all time. Ok we seen Rey already can beat him in a fight in the first one and then they make him out like a incompetent child in the 2nd one so oh man wonder if they can beat him in the 3rd!?

where does the name sluis van come from? it sounds like dutch to me as both sluis and van are dutch words. and it bassically means when translated to english lock /locked / lock off.

In-universe, Sluis Van is the home of the Sluissi race of aliens, so I'd guess it's just their language's equivalent of "Sluissi Land" or something. Out-of-universe, it was named after Don Vandersluis, a friend of the author who came up with the planet. He certainly sounds like he's got some Dutch heritage, at least.
