The lord of the rings was a better trilogy, but Star Wars had a far far far greater impact. Star Wars literally changed our entire culture. Not to mention, it was a pure movie. Keep in mind, Tolkien created his world to present a setting for his first love, inventing languages. Tolkien is actually a master World Builder, providing a well formed, massive world with thousands of years of history. He even detailed the creation of his world, established the origin of the evil precedence which can be traced from the origin directly to the Third Age. The LotR is just a small window into his world, the equivalent of a few paragraphs within the overall recorded history of the world containing Middle Earth, the Grey Havens and beyond.

Star Wars was a new concept back then and they didn't have the challenge of adapting a book that has so much history and deep lore. Jackson and co. had to adapt a complex world and nailed it. Star Wars wins easy. As far as trilogies go, the second chapter is most critical. Empire was the sequel that took risks, told an original story, introduced all new iconic elements and managed to raise the steaks. Two towers only proceeded with what was already established in fellowship. The fact that it does nothing but build to what is only the first of two battles, and the main characters are now missing takes away any sense of danger. The battle of helms deep is actually a disgrace. Over the top bloated and self indulgent.

Lotr no contest. The characters are so much more well developed, the themes and messages aren’t the Star Wars-cliché, the cinematography, script, story, are all far superior. Plus the diversity of characters is certainly there with the different races of dwarves, elves, hobbits, orcs, nazgûl, etc. Tolkien wrote entire histories, and fully fledged languages for Lotr, I mean, come on. The only tie between the two in my opinion is the music

@@oldbean7150 I prefer it because if you look at like, the silmarillion and all the other things that have been added onto the world of middle earth it just feels like more of a complete world with a history and different events and characthers and gods and..... etc.

I love both series but did you really give worldbuilding to star wars over lord of the rings

Personally I think LOTR was far better than Star wars for several reasons...but I think mostly because I've always preferred fantasy over sci fi

First of all, I wanna say we are tremendously lucky to have both near perfect trilogies, and we really shouldn't focus on which one is better. They are different and fantastic in their own ways. However, if, gun to my head, I had to choose which is better...I would have to pick LOTR, simply because every movie is amazing, there's no weak point. Of the six movies in both trilogies, Empire Strikes Back is my favorite. If Return of the Jedi had really stuck the landing, Star Wars would win this. ROTJ isn't terrible, but it does not have enough going for it to cement itself as the best trilogy ever. Star Wars has higher highs but lower lows. For shear consistency, I give the slight edge to LOTR.

"You know what? I've had enough of you. Your simplistic analysis of the trilogy aside, The Lord of the Rings was a massive achievement. And even the Academy recognized them that they gave Peter Jackson the Best Directing Oscar - an award your little friend George "Toy Boy" Lucas has never--and will never--win. Bones."

LOTR no question, not even a contest. Just the source material makes it impossible for star wars to win

"Just the source material makes it impossible for star wars to win" Not true! Look what they did to the Hobbit! That had a source material at least the equal of LOTR, but they botched that terribly. I'm not saying LOTR isn't better, just that there have been some epically bad adaptations of great source material.

Lord of the Rings tops Star Wars by light-years and worlds combined. I watched this when I was a young teenager and it has been such a part of what I love in my life.
