After spending quite a bit of time, I finally managed to get Fenix to the highest level in the game. In this video I explain my default strategy when trying to beat Brutal missions.
The strategy is focused around getting as many of the different Protoss AI Heroes out as possible. Them, together with the different modes of Fenix, make for an extremely powerful army.

Some things I've noticed myself: - Kaldaris seems incredibly powerful for how early on he is available. He might even get close to being as strong as Fenix' Praetor armor - Mass Adept seems incredibly strong. Half of the time the enemy targets the invulnerable shades, so even with the Adept's low health they can stay alive really well. - Clolarion is really good, and can easily hold off enemy attack waves on his own, allowing you to just send him to an enemy wave while you continue pushing an objective. - Don't forget Observers. Having them deployed in key points of the map allows you to easily deploy the Arbiter, then recall your entire army if the need arises. This can be really helpful on missions like Lock and Load, Oblivion Express and Miner Evacuation.

I like Fenix a lot, he's the first extra hero I bought. He's very similar to Karax, but with beefier units. Karax leans more heavily towards massing carriers supported with sentinels (zealots) because his anti-air is very weak, while Fenix encourages building basically every unit he has, which is a lot of fun. Karax and Fenix have amazing synergy together btw. Karax's healing carriers work amazingly well with Fenix's mechanical heavy army.

You go up against the ShadowTech enemy composition in this game, as indicated by early game reapers. This enemy composition features midgame liberators and lategame battlecruisers. The proper counter to ShadowTech for Fenix is to focus heavily on scouts and carriers - instead of building a ton of gateways at 12:10 you should have put down stargates, instead - gateway units are largely ineffectual against ShadowTech. Nice commentary and commander showcase, though.

How do you feel about the level 15 upgrade and focusing on two main unit types to capitalize on the 10+ unit req to boost special abilities? Say adept / immortal (adept for AA / Talis cleave and immortal for their damage vs hybrids) both at 10+ units to get that level 15 buff then just enough other units for your special ai personalities from the other unit types?

This is definitely the right build instead of the shown rushing-out-'hero'-units build. It has quicker build up, uses Fenix's talent, and easier to control.

What I would like to see more is Fenix in action without competent teammate that watched your back in every single fight. ...Without massing carriers. Had several games, some even just on hard, where my teammate was not competent. And there Fenix showed how he has problems carrying without carriers. Here we saw how Nova was in every fight and in most of those fight she was the one pushing. At that point you could just throw anything into that fight, even just pure Legionaries and it would end up the same. I would really love to see Fenix pushing alone with minimal support from other teammate and suceeding. Also thing to note: Even though they were not rushing, he was not even maxed out at end or floating any minerals. And that was with competent teammate which reduced losses quite a bit

iglidor I haven't tried brutal with him yet because I have him to only lvl 4 but he can still carry hard at lvl 4 with mostly gateway troops and some robo units with 0 carrier. As long as you don't lose all Adepts by AoE attacks and use fenix&sentry thing properly you should be fine on hard with even low lvl fenix (if you have 3 3 and 200 supply you can even just A move and still win lol)

not true, fenix is awesome and i'm only level 11 so i don't even imagine with 90mastery :D you use him and some ground with or without all 6 commandants, he beats everything, good thing to use your macro skills, it is quite hard but cool, the only thing that i find weird is the gas cost of disruptors, they could be great if payable :D

My question is not about his awesomeness or not. I mean he can always just mass carriers and solve everything with APM less then 10. It is about his ability to fight without help of teammate without carriers. Imagine if you from start to end had to intercept all attack wawes and make all pushes alone without help from your teammate. Since Fenix lacks any healing/regeneration/ressurection of his army, any unit he lose during early game will quickly snowball into lack of deathball in later part of mission unless you have teammate that cooperate and divide burden between both of you instead of leaving all work to you. Having great gas savings with 10th commander level power is nice but same as with Swan, without any mineral economy boost you will have slow start. And unlike Swan who has non-army solution for all stages of mission (early-mid-late), Fenix does not. Swan in early part can build turrets to defend and then fully recycle them back so he has no resource losses. In Mid game his Drop Bots along with Laser Drill keeps you stabilized. And in late game his Laser Drill powers cleans up anything that could threaten your army. On other side Fenix non-army solutions... Has great solution for early game through rushing one hero and spawning Fenix. Has so-so solution for mid game with Fenix where he is just able to deal with enemy wawes if you micro him hard enough. And then has absolutely nothing for late game. Fenix is not enough at that point. And unless you have death ball that can destroy enemy without any losses you are screwed. And that is what I would like to see. How would you manage to achieve Fenix Deathball without competent teammate without losing your army thriough game. Fenix can carry you at start but alone is unable to make any pushes against Brutal Strongpoints unlike Nova, Alarak or Kerrigan. He needs his army at all times. As I said above, look at this gameplay. Even with supportive teammate he was not even maxed out, did not even have maxed out upgrades and had no minerals and gas in stockpile. Now imagine if he would have to push alone.

I get what you're saying with Karax and Fenix, sometimes after my sentinels kill some units they turn into legionnaires, maybe that has something to do with the campaign where Karax leads the purifiers

I think Kaldalis rush is best rock clear because you can go gateway into early double gas and still clear expansion almost as fast, as well as having Kaldalis after.

Fenix-Nova have a very high mobility it seems.. they can just teleport however they want

TIL: 1. Probius is being built when you are have all champs 2. You need to rush rocks with Kaldalis (thanks comments!) 3. There is no cooldown on mass recall - so you can teleport multiple armies (if they are split)

You could probly go with an infantry-heavy build, while you use the more expensive units as a very sparse-number, support role. At least for the first bit while you'd then just work on ALL upgrades. Essentially just have one of every hero, but focus more on mineral-heavy infantry while the gas is mainly used to replacing heroes, and primarily upgrades. Don't have Fenix yet, but I REALLY want to.

Whateve builds, 1 thing I like about Fenix is Arbiter. He can use Zealot/Dragoon on one end of the map to defend/attack. Once done, change to arbiter and recall the entire army to the other side of the map. Great for defending.

I have a great idea for some future videos. You should rank your favorite Co-op commanders from 1-12 One being your favorite and who you think is the most fun to play. Then in a future video you could rank the commanders on their Power 1 being who you think is the strongest and 12 being who you think is the weakest regardless of how fun they are. You could break down each video and explain your reasoning behind each ranking. Might be long videos but if you edit it well (Which Im sure you would) You could do it in a 15-20 min video. Would love to see your opinions!

Great vid as always, Lowko, but one consideration: I know this strat was intended for co-op general, but I'm suspicious about this strategy in terms of mutations. This build you have is indeed great because regular brutal co-op gives you enough time to tech up. This isn't really valid for weekly brutal mutations, in particular ones that have early aggressive mutations. I know, I know, mutations sometimes forces you to play particular commanders, but for this vid I was expecting a safe, middle-of-the-road build that accounts for all situations, but I guess that kind of composition is really dependent on individual playstyles. Anyway, thanks for the cool strat! I'll probably try it out as I get Fenix to lvl 15.

Patrick L. mutations don't force you to use specific commanders I beat every mutation with every commander. I upload all my videos to youtube. I even have a best build order for Fenix. don't believe the nay sayers Fenix is good.

Judging by end game stats, Nova carried the game. Also I'd love to see this strat on maps where you need tons of dps, not just slow removal of enemy bases. Can you kill trains with that? How does it work on the new map where you can't expand early, especially if you want to do bonus?

Alexander Prokhorov It is pretty good when you built a carrier fleet. My ally left me on oblivion express on the last 2 trains and I was able to finish it by focusing down one train and teleporting the fleet to the next. I was also able to get both bonus trains. Carriers are pretty good at dps-ing most things and the Fenix Arbiter suit is useful to counterbalance the slowness of the fleet. While building the economy for an army, Fenix first two suits will help with either clearing rocks, first wave or even the expansion or bonus with sufficient micro but it doesnt have much impact late-game compared to other commander abilities. I still think it is an okay commander just because you can produce cheaper late-game units.

Ignoring enemies on Oblivion Express isn't something you can always do as Fenix with carriers, so you jut got lucky. Fininishing the game by focusing trains is not good. Good is clearing enemy bases and killing trains at the spawn location at level 0 mastery. Vorazun can do that with F2-A-click and zero deaths. The only case where focusing objective is actually correct strategy is focusing shuttles on the last wave.

I just said those were the last 2 trains, it was a calculated risk that relied on the carriers' dps and I won because of it. Vorazun is OP and most people agree, she bursts down everything ground with mass DTs and relies on the ally to clear air most of the time. Fenix is not supposed to be OP. His strengths are the fact that he can get late-game units earlier and Fenix himself provides some support to help with that. Hell, he even have champions to encourage different unit comps. Also I disagree with your last phrase. You and your ally decide when it is the optimal strategy to focus the objective.

I'm honestly not sure where Fenix sits on the co-op meta right now, but I find he's really strong. I predicted he would be the strongest commander since Vorazun, but I'm not sure that was an accurate prediction yet. For certain, though, he is my new co-op main. I think my favorite unit comp that I've tried so far is Adept/Colossus, at least for missions dealing with the Infested. Warbringer and Talis (and their backups, obviously) are great for clearing those guys out, and they kill the Blightbringer and Eradicators with ease. I've yet to test this comp on Dead of Night, though; maybe they'll be able to push out during the night and even bring down the Virophage when it spawns.

The hero upgrades for each unit gets a bonus to dmg (slightly different for each hero) up to +10 for having 10 more of the same unit. But if i recall correctly its on a auto cast skill for most of the heroes

Contrary to what people say, getting all the champions is a fairly viable strategy, of course it is more difficult and if you have the extra resources of course add on more carriers. Also people don't realize something about his energy consumption. You will be using his melee (forgot what it's called) and dragoon suit the majority of the time, so whenever there is no action happening, or you're fighting a fight you know you can win, switch to the air arbiter suit to let your other two recharge energy and health. It's a lot more effective to use this once you get the talent that boosts it by 15 percent.

Fenix definitely need energy regen upgrade. He becomes sort of useless meat shield in late game if you use a lot of abilities on early game and he is currently way weaker than even Nova in terms of both burst and sustainable dps. (And considering Nova has 3 commander abilities on top of them you see how weak it is for Fenix to have only his 3 suits that runs out of energy in like a 30-60 sec of combat and takes 8.3 minutes to fully recharge) Therefore we need either a New commander ability or significant buff on his suits combat ability (which I think boosting energy regen would be easiest way to achieve) His army is definitely some of strongest in co op with his champions but Fenix himself can't support his army as well as Nova or Vorazun can (I know Kerri and Stukov r top tier too but their not top tier for having op army so I'm not gonna compare them with Fenix who has strong army but very weak commander abilities)

Better yet, skip the gateway and don't build a cyber core until you want to upgrade. Just start with a stargate/scout, research mojo, and get a fleet beacon. Carriers all the way.

I don't see him being weak, but playing him forces you to either mass carrier, scout or making everything. Mass carrier is low on damage against high armor and is most stable, mass scout is fragile, making everything requires you to keep an eye on what you need at the moment, really tired to play like that. Fenix is so weak compared to the demo videos and other heroes. You can't fight an ultra, There is a 1 sec cooldown on the dragoon overcharge, the attack damage is so low compared to the campaign...I'd say he is only good clearing low tier units. I use him to stop small units running past my carriers.

tbh what makes him midcore is mostly lack of strong commander abilities I think. All he really has other than champions r himself and his energy regen is too crap to go max skill usage for even half of the game.

With mass carriers the commander is on point tho, all he has to accomplish is to hold from minutes 4 to 10 where the carrier number stack up. After that interceptors removes almost all army lost and the army count stack up steadily. If the internal cooldown of activated dragoon charge is removed, I think he can be the top of the middle commanders.

That map is probably the easiest map in the pool. I'm not saying Fenix is weak, but he's not as easy as you make it seem. Since the Bel'shir map, they've all gotten increasingly more difficult where just sitting back and upgrading, won't work. But the real kicker is your ally. Sure you can count on yours, but in solo que, it's rarely that smooth. Between those 2 things, I can't just sit back and crank out upgrades, while still trying to defend/push the objective. Which is where my problem with Fenix comes in: his ground army is too expensive. If I'm making units, with a ground army, I can't upgrade. It's one or the other. Surprisingly, his air army is insanely cheap. you can both upgrade and crank out Scouts like it's nothing. Then when you've chronoed out the upgrades, you can top off the army with as many Carriers as you can make. I feel strongly that his only viable choice is mass air. Ground is just too damn expensive.

If you do a Fenix guide, shouldn't you not use mastery ? (or only 6 points) Because 75 mastery change the way you can play in Brutal. it allows you to make mistakes without hindering mission success, no ? So not everyone can imitate you in your video since you got so much of an advantage !

From my experience, Karax and Fenix don't fit that well. Both have almost no ground units that can attack air. I even lost a mission because of that. Of course you can build around it and the dragoon suit as well as the bombardment skills of karax do help. But it might still prove to be a problem, especially on faster missions.

Personally i have the opposite opinion, all of fenix units are mechanical and benefit from the healing beam from karax and you can easily mass adept to take out the air armies, add in fenix with well controlled AOE in the dragoon suit, cloak from arbiter or the damage reduction with sentries and they can take out the air armies quite easily

Okay, mass adept might work of course, but are they powerful enough? Because the basic damage of a standard adept isn't that great and I never played Fenix, so I have no idea how good his ones are. My experience is from playing Karax together with a Fenix on the newest mission (where Amon wants to awaken that powerful hybrid thing). We both went for many robotic units and then the struggle began. I guess one guy just has to go carriers and then the commanders could work relatively well together, even though both are rather slow at building up armies. P.S: Artanis seems to work really well with Fenix.
