If I remember correctly, the gauss rifle fires its rounds (which are actually needles hence the name, C-14 "Impaler" Gauss Rifle") via a hybrid of magnetic force like a coil or rail gun as well as combustible material like real firearms, this is the most likely theory. Another theory states that the brass shells were there to store cooling gel/liquid in order to prevent the gauss rifle from overheating due to prolonged firing

Think I'll drop my own comment into this mess of a flamewar. In SC1, each campaign had its own story and purpose, a message. The Terran campaign was a cautionary message about how the enemy of your enemy is NOT necessarily your ally. The Zerg campaign was a fairly simple "hivemind" oriented story where you play as the bad guy, didn't have much of a message aside from setting up the Zerg as a powerful, singleminded force of nature; not necessarily evil but certainly a threat to everything else. But it DID help set the stage for the Protoss campaign, which was themed heavily around setting aside old hatreds and differences to deal with a bigger threat. At the time, it was a fairly new story concept in the RTS genre, one also seen in C&C2's expansion release a couple of years later, Firestorm. Warcraft III would also employ this overarching theme. And then there was Brood War's campaign, which was slightly more linear and interconnected in how it progressed. Brood War's overall story could best be described as a message that some forces are beyond our control and we shouldn't try to harness them. As DuGalle puts it, "The creatures we were sent here to tame...are untamable." The characters were also quite good. Raynor was your ordinary guy, maybe a bit more altruistic and brave but he's supposed to be the average good old boy type thrown into a very "grey" world where almost everything is morally ambiguous and he thus often has to compromise with the principles he values in order to have any hope of success at all. Kerrigan as a Ghost was a tragic figure, a soldier but also a woman, capable of fear, affection, annoyance, and devotion; a very human character. You felt for her. And then she was infested. In SC1 she was mostly a mindless power-mad thrall of the Overmind, but in BW she was the character I've repeatedly described as that biker chick who you love to hate but also unwillingly admire just because she's plain badass. Mengsk? Yeah, he's an asshole but he's a BELIEVABLE asshole in SC1: He seems to genuinely believe his cause to be for the good of all, but he also lusts for power, and in BW you see that his lust for power and his vengefulness outstrips his sparse idealism. He isn't necessarily evil but there's no place in a conventional Heaven for him, either. I was quite interested in seeing where SC2 would take this scriptwriting. Yeah, it stole a lot of stuff from WH40K but it was still in many ways a pretty original sci-fi story. It would be inaccurate to marginalize it as "a more hopeful ripoff of WH40K." Then I actually saw WoL. Shame. I liked Gabriel Tosh because he harkens back to the old style of SC storytelling as a "grey" character like a lot of others from the older installment in the franchise. But most of the characters I had so enjoyed watching for over a decade had been stripped of much of their identity. Raynor wasn't so bad because he had his moments where he wasn't all good, but what they did to Kerrigan and Mengsk is not acceptable, period. Both were transformed into transparently evil, two-dimensional baddie types. Mengsk isn't an idealistic if hypocritical ruler, he's just a powermonger who openly lies and terrorizes his populace. The game doesn't even try to show what little moral backing he has, and the news segments with Donny Vermillion were funny but also served to complete the ruination of the Dominion as anything other than "the bad guys." But this pales in comparison to what they did to Kerrigan: There were moments in BW where she acted like she had some remnants of a conscience, some part of her that still wanted to be human. And she was capable of fear, too, as seen in the briefing to the last mission of the second Zerg campaign. In SC2, she's this evil alien overlord megalomaniac. Almost no trace of her old personality, where she acted like the Queen Bitch of the Universe: A casually sadistic but cunning manipulator who did everything in style. Instead, she's just your typical "I AM YOUR GOD NOW, BRING ME YOUR VIRGINS" villain. Could've been ripped right out of a Power Ranger flick and you'd have trouble telling the difference. The hate WoL recieves is well-deserved, sorry. The game tries to make players think for themselves and feel like they have some control over how the story progresses. Gabriel Tosh vs. Nova was a good moment. You find out the man you've been helping has been using you, but the person who tells you has an agenda of her own, and is technically a sworn enemy. Although Tosh could've argued better for his own side, it was a fairly hard decision, objectively. Nova could be lying, Tosh could be lying. Neither are very trustworthy. Unfortunately, this decent writing doesn't extend to the other two choices: Both the Haven and Char decisions were bullshit. Hanson, if she was a more realistic character, would know there was nothing she could do for the infested colonists in Haven and tearfully let Raynor kill the infested while she works to save the rest. Even if she could cure the virus, the infested would probably just die from the changes caused by said virus. And of course, she earlier says "Conventional wisdom says a cure is impossible. The virus mutates too quickly." Behaving irrationally like she did during the choice and forcing you to attack your old, valued allies really made no sense: It was drama for the sake of drama and for the sake of giving you a "choice." And you could've actually taken both of the options in the Char decision: "Hell, if this platform's so important, why not just nuke it?" "The nests are burrowed deep into the superstructure. Surface detonations won't do it." And just after that, you find out the objective of the mission is to destroy the cooling units for the platforms. On the surface. Nukes would've worked for that. Would've saved the lives of some members of the strike team and allowed you time to go underground and kill the Nydus Worms. It doesn't help that the decisions are also never wrong: No matter what you do, it's the right decision and you get to feel good about it. I liked Heart of the Swarm. It wasn't perfect. It's still a shadow of what SC1 and BW were. But it returns to those gloriously dark days when not every single action you take is somehow justified, even if it's actually the wrong decision. (Not to mention that being the equivalent of the Bugs in the Starship Trooper movies for a change is actually just plain fun in the dumb, "Let's destroy everything and revel in our power" kind of way.) Kerrigan is different than she was as any of her previous forms: As the Ghost, as the Queen Bitch of the Universe, or as the boring alien overlord of WoL. But given what happened to her, her character makes sense. She has a conscience and she hates much of what she has to do, but not enough to redeem her from a moral standpoint. She's still an antihero instead of a "good gal." Her story is about getting revenge on one man and killing hundreds of thousands, even millions of people to do it. Yeah, he's an evil bastard who needs to be put down, and so her actions could be justified, but she's not doing it to liberate people, she's doing it for revenge, plain and simple. It also shows her coming to terms with her role - her destiny - as the one to save the universe from Amon by wresting control of the Swarm away from him. Of course, Mengsk is still disgustingly two-dimensional and Narud was another intellectual snorefest. I was also disappointed by Stukov. Don't get me wrong, I liked Stukov in HotS and think he should've been given more important roles outside of Skygeirr Station. It's just that while he wasn't ever an especially well-developed character, he's nothing like he used to be and while that may make some sense given what happened to him, he still seems like he's changed too much for that. On the plus side, Dehaka was a very interesting character and the development of Zagara's character from yet another snorefest overlord into a competent leader was also good, and Stukov was still a good character overall because he provided another human perspective on the events of the story that in many ways complemented Kerrigan's. I hope Legacy of the Void will ditch the pseudo-mysticism of the Protoss we've seen in SC2's Zeratul and return to how Protoss society looked in SC1/BW: Sort of mystical in Zeratul's case, and in the case of the khalai Protoss, pompous and arrogant but down-to-Earth. I would've been too cynical to hope for that after WoL but HotS has given me some reason to hope for the better.
@Myrskylintu10 жыл бұрын
Having actually read all that, I must say that you more or less captured quite sharply the essence of each installment to the series. I'd like to argue, however, that I kind of liked the semi-mysticism that Zeratul missions had going for them. In case of the Dark Templar, they should indeed be a bit mystic, but concerning the Khalai Protoss, I would like to see that kind of approach you described - slightly arrogant but down-to-earth, too. Especially Fenix's quote from the first Protoss mission in original SC1 inspired me greatly. "Even though we have marched across hundreds of worlds together, I never could have figured that we would be fighting here on Aiur. The Zerg are indeed worthy foes". The way how he there describes the Zerg as worthy foes is just pure bad-assery. It's like, "Never give up! We fight unto the very end for death and glory! Arr!"

Man, this was seriously TL;DR, but I have to say I knew you "got" it from the first couple of sentences. Pretty much spot on. It was always a pipe dream of mine to write a spec-script for an SC movie - I'd hire you as my screenwriting partner in a second, for what that's worth, lol.

AzureTemplar Fenix was basically Worf. He was a badass everybody liked and no doubt real good at parties downing Dragoon tank fluid like a champ. Ain't no Texan could keep up with THAT one at the bar. And yeah, the Dark Templar ARE kinda mystical, but the way WoL handled it was still a little wonky. I positively cringed when I heard, "A...Protoss and Zerg hybrid. Gods, an abomination! Who created this atrocity?" What, did Zeratul forget about Duran? The man who caused him to disappear for most of the interbellum period between Brood War and Wings of Liberty? Not to mention the writing was trying too hard to sound mystical. DTs did a little of that in SC but they didn't lay it on THAT thick. They were also more down-to-Earth, and more clever in how they phrased themselves. While they could be poetic, they were fine with flatly stating things if it was best to do it that way. When they WERE poetic, they were better at it then than they were in WoL. You'd have to read the early novels to really get what I'm sayin', though. Zeratul was described in "Starcraft: The Queen of Blades" as being a living riddlebook. He talked in riddles, and he wasn't hidebound about cracking jokes at everyone's expense, including his own. He was basically a wise old mentor figure. I understand his personality's changed a lot since he killed Raszagal, but I wouldn't expect it to be in the direction it's gone, either. ***** I appreciate the compliment, Neal. It's painful, man, looking at what's become of Blizzard's work in general lately. Not unlike CoD (Also an Activision franchise), they've sacrificed good writing for generic and drama for the sake of action and drama. For instance, I was a longtime player of the Warcraft RTS titles and I never got into WoW, but I understood and appreciated what they were trying to do in the vanilla version way, way back. They were giving you a chance to explore the world laid out in WC3. Then every expansion afterwards was about some "epic" large-scale conflict with the end goal of defeating some Big Baddie at the end. The only expansion I liked at all was, surprisingly enough, Mists of Pandaria. Because it tried to return to the roots of exploring the world and having an influence on it at a lower, more day-to-day level. But it, too, suffered from Big Baddie Syndrome, it just minimized the symptoms by paying less attention to Garrosh until near the end. And look at Starcraft II. Both games ended with...an "epic" battle against Big Baddie. Whoever's writing the scripts now (Chris Metzen, right?) is basically copy-pasting the skeleton of the same fuckin' plot they've had since The Burning Crusade in WoW without once taking a break from it, and plastering a different-flavored skin on it each time. It's mind-numbing how lazy it is on a basic level. And yeah, previous Blizzard titles also had final boss battles to determine the fate of the world but AT LEAST they didn't make it glaringly obvious who it was gonna be against from the start or near the start. You weren't expecting to fight the Overmind until WELL into Starcraft. You didn't even know it existed until the second third of the game. Same deal with Archimonde and the Burning Legion in RoC. And I don't think the ending of Brood War was at all readily apparent until you were halfway through the Zerg campaign. The very LAST part of the story.

@@justnoob8141 I know it is really late reply but, the C-14 is confused between a Gauss and Rail rifle. A Gauss rifle fires a circular disc shaped projectile using high powered magnets. Once launched the projectile is then malformed by the force of the launch into a slug A rail rifle follows the same concept except that the magnets are used to assisst the acceleration of a projectile. So the C-14 uses good ole badass bullets that when fired the magnets along the barrel further accelerate the spike using less power than a Gauss rifle.

@kishin901 If you someone have Super Advance Power Armor Mk2, someone have Super Advance Power Armor Mk2 Destroyer. It's like AP rounds vs Tanks or bullets that can penetrate bulletproof vest, etc. And Zergs are evolving to be more offective killers, so yeah... Armor piercing needles...

I wonder if Marines in SC ever learn how to aim
@justnoob81416 жыл бұрын
VindicareAssassin they did. Zergling just as fast as leopard.
@johnangeles9504 жыл бұрын
Can you even aim with that large armor?

Warfield killed that hydra with ONE PUNCH
@Ricktofenable7 жыл бұрын
Shas'O Swoll i mean the marine suit has hella strength but no one is that brave to be in a zergs face like that
@julianacasas98944 жыл бұрын
@@Ricktofenable Because zerg are too fast,strong and aggressive so it's rare for the marine to fight them in fistfight yeah they can kill a zergling or hydralisk in one punch but most of zergs are too fast. Man i wanna see some marine has skilled in close combat and can give the zerg hard time to kill it. (Lol imagine like that)

As for SC vs SC2 - I just finished first chapter of SC, and I must say it is a lot more challenging, and requires a lot more microcontrol. What to say only about enemy ghosts locking my ships all the time, science ships using EMP, and powerful base attacks, in which I loose half my army.

One of the most high tech armor that takes as solid minute to properly put on And it gets torn apart like tissue paper At this point you got to ask your self Why the fuck do they still wear armor when then could just wear their pajamas and still get the same “protection”

The level that leads to this was a bit dissapointing in that there's no REAL rush to go save Warfield. The only way he can actually die even on Brutal (which in the human campaign really lives up to the name) is if you destroy him yourself.
@KaiserMattTygore9279 жыл бұрын
WorldWalker128 Which is why I liked this mission, I got so fucking bored of RUSH RUSH RUSH in every other mission, I was able to build what I wanted and attacked how I desired. Gates of hell was one of the few SC2 missions that felt like SC1.

@megaeber some of the mercs are left over UED troopers. But brood war kind of ended where everything was the same as it was at the end of Starcraft 1. so there was no need to really go into it.

Battle knife, iron fist... Warfield is technically a melee unit.

@MassiveDynamic3 Think it's FRAP, because the cinematic in Starcraft 2, save the intro and ending, are done with the in-game graphic engine, not separate movie file.

Was that hydralisk just burrowed in the terran trench the whole time? Hydras can't move while burrowed. I imagine it was like "Shit, my team's just killed all the other terrans. Better kill the general before anyone else killsteals."
