640 X 480 was the native resolution of starcraft. That was the TV standard at the time too. The player/crowd shots are what it looks like. Black and white movies and TV on real film can be scanned to higher resolutions. Early digital stuff looked fine in its time, but we can't upgrade it well. In the age of projection tube TVs, 20 inch diagonals in 4:3 was pretty standard. 36 inch were absolute heavy monsters, like several hundred pounds.

I am really suprised how fisheye even made it into the finals. Maps really seem completly unbalanced. Except for the Air map, there was no map that favoured protoss.

Btw the maps were not weird they were just different. I mean you want the same maps now so the games are all the time cookie cutter like? Why not change the style of maps from time to time and force players to learn new builds that are effective on that map? I want to see different maps so I can see different strategies...

Funfact: Back in 2003 i had to play Fisheye in the 2nd Round of the German Online Qualifiers for WCG. We tried to arrange a date for our game via ICQ and he told me he is on vacations for one or two weeks. Instead of getting a freewin i told him he should advance without the games, because he was so skilled and mannered and that time.

As a kid, these WCG vids of hundreds of people playing cs 1.6 in that huge arena was exactly what got me into competitive gaming. I can still remember the feeling, what a time... It was so magical. Felt like I had discovered a new universe out there

Can you do a reaction to best highlight ever made in my opinion? Its called "starcraft pimpest plays 2002/2003" or "[pG] Starcraft Movie". These are 21 year old videos and a lot of the actions was standard then. But this is just history. :D

I am from Germany and honestly the sc scene here just gave upafter this. Our best ever got crushed by a "c tier" korean player. We knew it was over. It really was like ..ok we go to wc3. Lets hope koreans never show up there.

Now that you're diving into ancient history. Maybe watch the documentary of the Norwegian player Slayer who went to Korea and won the KBK Masters Season 2. (2000) Players like Marine, Grrrr and IntoTheRain did also participate and he won. Documentary is called "Alias Slayer" He was offered to stay in Korea but chose to go back to Norway to finish school.

I have seen Fisheye in person coming to Spain and playing in a tourney in Valencia at that time. He was the slowest player possible barely making any moves and yet everything was so decisive especially on Nostalgia (map).

The problem is that the west didn't understand esport yet so it was the player base that moved on to other games* which impacted the emerging of talents * Also Blizzard didn't do anything to promote a community driven moderation ans management so the abandoned game became a mess of toxicity, abuses and hacking

I remember downloading replays from this WCG finals Ogogo vs FisheYe like it was yeaterday. I didn't have internet. Was just playing on lan partie and was downloading replays in the school. I also watched fisheYe after that live on Tournament "Lancraft" here in Czech Republic. He won there. He had Very low APM like 160. But He had all kinds of weird strategies..
