I beg to differ. The ES games are known to be janky, stilted and inconsistent combat, they never update the engine and you can always count on NPCs doing that immersion-breaking lock-eyes-and-don’t-move thing with every single conversation in the game. They’re a sloppy company that’s always made sloppy games that happened to be good despite these flaws. I’m not as certain as everyone else seems to be that they can surmount these flaws - especially the nearly 20 year old game engine.

If it comes anywhere close to playing like Skyrim / Fallout 4 did but drops you into a galaxy with lots of things to explore and find then I'm gonna be over the moon with it. Then it's just down to if the main story / side quest stories will hold your interest. Also, I bet some of those so called "barren" planets have some of the best vistas and locations which are just crying out for photos and videos to be made on them. Kind of like the series you used to do on Elite dangerous. Some of those Ice world planets you showcased may have been barren, but boy were the beautiful!
@draeath
@draeath 10 ай бұрын
There's just SO much potential for modders, too. In previous titles, there was a lot more work involved in integrating new locations - and also compatibility problems between several mods trying to modify the same area to do so themselves. The whole model of traveling planet to planet (or even place to place on the same planet) throws that conflict out the window. (excepting mods wanting to touch static locations, like major cities...)

What makes Bethesda games different is two things. First is the way they structure their missions and quests, both the main ones and the side quests. In many games the main quest is like a main road through a city, and the side quests are just dead-end side streets, or curved paths that bring you back to the main road, so you have the feeling you are being directed through the game. Mass Effect is a great example of this. In contrast, Bethesda games are structured like a maze with multiple entrances and exits, and you can move about as you wish. This gives the player a feeling of freedom and makes their games much more interesting. The second thing is their engagement with the modding community. They know how much modders bring to their games so they open the code and make tools available to encourage development, which attracts really talented folks. Just wait until some of the masters of modding get into this game - they will add amazing content and missions to all those “empty” worlds, which is precisely what Bethesda wants.

I think what made Elder Scrolls and Fallout games more immersive than most RPGs (and what completely separates them from ED, NMS and SC) was that feeling that everyone around you had a life they were living whether the player was there or not. What broke that immersion was this issue of the player able to become the top dog in every faction they joined, and that the vast majority of the population knew who you were and what your mission was (i.e. "Dragonborn"). It shifted the reason for the NPC to exist from "they have their own lives" to "I exist to advance the player's quest". The story immersion became a parody of itself as a result. Based on what I've seen and read from Bethesda, it would appear that they have tried to strike a more balanced approach to a player's involvement with a given faction, so we may not be able to become the head of a dozen different factions at once, but that in some the opportunity to rise simply doesn't reach that high, or the player's involvement in a faction is always in the peripheral, rather than as a central focus of the faction itself. And though I have no direct evidence, I have repeatedly been left with the feeling that most the NPCs in Starfield don't know who you are, don't care, and that is not going to change with the progression of player quests and the like. I hope I am right about this, I think it's one of the primary immersion-breaking issues with both Skyrim and Fallout 4. Great video, as always.

I'm in my 50s and at this stage of my life I'm not consumed with combat or quests. My thing is exploration and having conversations with my viewers. A little bit of questing & combat is ok, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really mean anything. Thus I hope that I am able to roam around without having an encounter every 60 seconds. No Man's Sky was good for that but didn't have much civilization which made it feel very desolate. Looking back I think Star Wars Galaxies, my first MMO ever, was just right as far as having several communities spread across each planet in between the barren areas. Graphics weren't too bad either. A little bit linear.

ive seen people even hype up the shipping system between outposts, but i guarantee it functions almost identically to supply lines between settlements in fallout 4, you will likely have to assign one your ships to connect two outposts together, and at that point, they share resources between them, there will be no system of managing that connection, and at most you will see the supply ship land and take off, you may even see them in space depending on how the space map functions, and you will sometimes see them at the other outpost, but if theres anything more than that to it, then ill be surprised

You could only believe that if you had either never before played a Bethesda game, or if you are so focused on wanting a game like Star Citizen that you have convinced yourself that it will be that type of thing. I would so welcome a Skyrim in space. It’s all set in space with ships, planets, upgrades, missions, exploration…and more space sim players love. But, also add a MASSIVE open world limited only by the entire galaxy! This gives us as players so many potentially endless side quests of all sorts. Especially with Bethesda working with moders running with entire planets, galaxy’s as a canvas for the endless source of things to do. I’m truly excited to play Starfield, but also know Star-field will be my obsession, and will take up all my gaming time for months, years to come. My self and so many others Still jump into Skyrim to this very day; so many starts over and over again. Star Field could be much the same, but I see the game as just unending.

For me at least, there's a very clear line through Bethesda's mainline RPGs. They iterate, add new features (and remove others), but there's a very clear evolution. Looking at the mainline games only: * Morrowind: First 3D RPG made (not counting Arena and Daggerfall here). By Bethesda. Complex systems, closest to pen and paper RPGs. * Oblivion: Morrowind, but with more mainstream, streamlined systems and QOL additions. * Fallout 3: Oblivion, but with guns and companions. * Skyrim: Fallout 3, but with much better companions and a much more coherent world. Even more mainstream design. * Fallout 4: Skyrim, but with guns. Better FPS than Fallout 3, and now also base building and better crafting. * Starfield: Fallout 4 / Skyrim in space. And now also with Space Ships. Draws on elements from all their previous games. I don't find "Skyrim in space" to be a dismissive description, but rather see it as a culmination (for now) of the type of game they've been working on for 21 years. I'm very much looking forward to it, because I know and love the type of game that Bethesda makes, and I love the potential we get with modding, and a modding community with 21 years of experience working with their engine. But I'm keeping my expectations realistic. I expect "Skyrim in space" and nothing more or less than that, and I'm happy with that.

Looks less Skyrim in space. More likely Fallout 4 in space. Bethesda associating it with Skyrim because its their most popular title.

Once again, great insight provided by OA. Yes, game mechanics are same but the genres alone create their own game domains. Before PCs I played D&D, TSR’s Gamma World, GDW Traveller. You couldn’t compare game strategy and tactics in each environment even though they all used dice to arbitrate actions. So IMO Bethesda have covered off my preferred genres.

It's very clear it's closer to fallout 4 in terms of systems than Skyrim. Maybe the quest variety and size and the world being populated would be more akin to Skyrim, but generally Fallout was also full of npcs and quantity doesn't alter features, it just means more writing and voice acting. The new stuff is ship building and space combat which I look forward to trying.

People said Fallout 3 (and later 4) were going to be just oblivion/skyrim with guns. Even if that ends up being the case (and I will argue it didn't end up being the case with my examples)? So what! Skyrim in Space sounds fun as hell.

I have never played a single Bethesda game yet I'm quite excited with the game. Some would day that's the reason because of bugs of whatever, but I always wanted a space RPG on this scale since I first played Mass Effect.

I plan on buying this game eventually, but I think it will not be in the first year or maybe two. Not just because I never really get anything the first year, but from what the system requirements look like.. A new pc will also be purchased.

If 90% of the explorable universe was populated with life and lush planets it would be incredibly unrealistic, and also it would probably take 10 more years to develop

This, so much this. It's a ball of gas, a ball of rock, or a ball of ice. If it's a ball of rock and it's within a particular thin band around it's star, it might contain life. With a few possible caveats, that's it. 1/10 containing life? That's probably well over the actual percentage as it is. To have every planet, or even a majority, contain life would feel ridiculous (and one reason why NMS feels so . . . cartoony to me).
@pickle7769
@pickle7769 9 ай бұрын
@@SuperWIDEgaming I agree! Even planets IN the goldilocks zone have a small percentage of containing life. I appreciate Bethesda for grounding the experience! Can’t wait!
