THE VERY FIRST DIRECTOR on Stargate SG-1 was Mario Azzopardi, who helmed the show's 2-hour pilot "Children of the Gods" in 1997. The Malta-born director also worked on Stargate Atlantis, The Outer Limits, Total Recall 2070, Highlander, and many more shows we love from the 80s, 90s, and 00s.
In this clip from an extensive conversation with "Dial the Gate," Azzopardi remembers shooting the episode and dealing with numerous practical challenges - from the Vancouver weather in February to the show's ambitious visual effects (for 1990s cable TV), to a scratch that appeared down the center of the film that ruined the entire first day's worth of work. "After the first day it felt like we were a week behind!" he jokes.
