No matter how convoluted it got, the ascended ancient storyline was always interesting to me. When they got to talk to an ascended being, it always felt like a significant moment, and I credit the SG1/SGA writers for keeping these moments big by keeping them rare.

I think that is why I was so upset by when Atlantis was reclaimed by the Ancients in "The Return." The Lanteans, essentially the Ancients before they ascended, show up and pretty much kick the entire Atlantis expedition back to Earth. Only for them to be unceremoniously wiped out by Asurans. It felt really cheap to me to have these beings multiple seasons of multiple SG shows put up on a pedestal die almost instantly from the viewers angle. They could have taken the time to portray them as flawed, showing faults in the description painted in previous episodes, but they were downright foolish. Immediately sending away a group of experienced and dedicated people who comprehend the current threats of Pegasus far better than they could, and had survived those threats with a combination of scrounged Atlantean technology, duct tape and hope. They showed little to no interest in a group of people that their race had essentially devolved into over thousands of years. Also, there were no survivors of the Asuran attack, which irked me to no end. These were the people whose losing plan was literally settling the Milky Way galaxy. I could understand not keeping a huge number around because they were too powerful, but they easily could have had a few get lucky, only to learn the survivors were essentially low tier workers to prevent them from making things too easy and give a window into the Ancients like we hadn't seen before.

I love how Vala is asking perfectly rational questions and nobody bothers to answer her. I guess the writers wanted to poke fun at how dumb and inconsistent this law of non-interference can be.
@battlesheep2552
@battlesheep2552 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's inconsistent. As Daniel explained it to Jack in a previous episode, just talking to them is technically against the rules, but the other ascended beings don't care enough to enforce the rules in those instances.
@CatoNovus
@CatoNovus Жыл бұрын
You also have to keep in mind that while technically against letter of the rules, it isn't against the intent of the rules. The letter is "Don't interfere in the existence of lesser evolved beings." and the reason of that is evidenced by the actions of the Goa'uld and Ori. They eventually take on the mindset of being gods, and treat everyone "beneath" them as slaves. It may start as helping out(let me teach you about aqueducts and indoor plumbing), but then becomes "without me, you would be huddled in caves around scraps". The intent of the rule is to let lesser evolved beings determine their own fates, rather than to just leave them adrift. More "I cannot just give you information that would risk you and the people of your world annihilating yourselves." than "I'm a higher being, your physical existence doesn't effect me, and therefore, I'll just ignore it." They want to help, but also want the lesser beings to earn things as well. If we're not intelligent to figure out stuff ourselves, then we're likely not wise enough to handle the burden of those things. Edited to complete the logic.

Vala, in many cases, takes on the role of the "spectator" so she voices the doubts that the audience may have. Through her the writers can poke fun at their own writing and keeping the tone a little lighter, while making the audience not feel like obvious questions are left unasked. The non-interference rule actually always felt pretty logical to me - like any rule in a powerful cabal, it will be tested and bent because for the others in the cabal it is not exactly simple to enforce them and it doesn't make sense to punish minor infractions like talking and nudging. It's not like there's some highest ascended authority that will cut your internet privileges if you say something you shouldn't.

They can only interfere when whatever they are doing could have been done if they were human/on the lower planes. So when Daniel said he couldn’t help find the Eye Of Ra in S6, he did help, but by using the knowledge around him to find the eye, and not phase through the wall to find it. Morgan is using information that she could have discovered if she was human, which is allowed, and she is being rather held back on information.

She says that it was only after several thousand years after Atlantis was abandoned that Merlin saw the threat the Ori could one day become. Yet from the Star Gate movie we know that the original Lanteans came from the place as the Ori, another galaxy far far away a very, very long time ago. So how is it that Merlin, a mere 8,000 years or so give or take observed the Ori and decided they were becoming a threat?
@Frenki94

Merlin was a bit of an outlier in the Ancient society. Considering he was building a weapon and Morgan was sent to stop him, it's quite probable he didn't agree with them not using the Ark of Truth and not outright dealing with the Ori from the start instead of running away.

We don't know how long the Ori have pushed Origin like they would later do. We don't know when the Ori ascended, did they do it before or after the Ancients, or around the same time. We don't know what kind of contact the Ori and Ancients maintained after their breakup, but we know they had devices which could communicate between them and they still existed and worked at this point in time. Frankly there are many ways in which the Ori could become a threat requiring a weapon to fight them thousands of years ago, even when the schism between Ancients and Ori were millions of years old. After all it is suggested the plague which befell the Ancients in the Milky Way was Ori in nature, but given later information regarding the ascended Ori not knowing of the Milky Way's many humans, it seem the Ori assumed the Ancients wiped out by the plague when they left for Pegasus and wiped the galaxy with the Dakara device. Going by this information the Ori would have had to not be ascended at that point in time. So they must have ascended on a similar time scale to the Ancients, and probably later than the first Ancients, so the ascended Ancients could set up the "defense" of their human successors in anticipation of potential problems with the Ori. Personally I think the Ori grew to be a problem over time for the ascended, initially they were probably a non-threat but then they set up Origin and their threat started to escalate as their power grew with each additional human follower. Merlin predicted this threat would escalate indefinitely and decided that acting while the Ancients still had numerical superiority and could defend against the Ori was better than waiting for the Ori to become so powerful they could not be contained.
@barneyrubble4293
@barneyrubble4293 Жыл бұрын
I think the Ori had not yet ascended by the time the Ancients left the Ori galaxy and it was only after ascending that Merlin became aware of them and the threat they posed thus prompting him to return to human form.

There's quite obviously tollerances to what people do, it's literally how all of our society & law works, there's not many other ways to go about it, because ultra hard lines can very easily become blood baths, there's obviously inherent tollerances in everything. I mean just look at our fking world right now, the untold horrors going on right now & for the past 400 days for both sides, just meat in a pit of hell wrought purely by Putin, there's natural tollerances on both sides, what Putin threatens & barks at the world, & what the world does back.
