It really makes you wonder, just how many stood before Teal'c like O'Neill did and said the exact same words. Only for Teal'c to just shoot whoever it was because he knew the person couldn't make a difference.

Yes and if Teal’c didn’t do what he did, theres a good chance that he would still be loyal towards Apophis, whatever happen to the SGC might not be around anymore and there’s a chance Earth would be obliterated. That means there wouldn’t be an expedition team going to Atlantis, which means Tayla would likely be dead while trying to protect her people & Ronan will likely be dead as well.

The absolute genius of this writing is staggering. In the Movie, Daniel brought O’niell, a man who believed he was too far gone back to life, and here O’niell does the same thing for Teal’c. He can recognise the look of a man who hates himself for his actions because he’s seen that look everyday in the mirror. This solidifies one of the main themes of the series, that there’s really nothing you can’t come back from if you trust yourself. Still a piece of genius 24 years later

To be fair, they're pretty brainwashed and all they saw at first was the first prime shooting the first one and tossing the staff to O'Neill. Teal'c wasn't quite a god in their eyes, but they weren't primed to question his orders or actions, so even after he shot the first one they probably wouldn't realize his full intent until he kept shooting at them.

I love this scene because Teal’c as he’s walking amidst the ruins that is now his life, he is and was fully aware of what his choices and actions would cost him. He had already accepted his fate, so when Jack turns to him, Teal’c looks at him hopeless, because he knows he’s done, he’s accepted it. He’s not happy about it but he’s accepted it and he’s not expecting anyone to save him, he’s not expected any prizes or rewards, it hasn’t even cross his mind, so that when Jack essentially offers him a place to stay it was a lifeline for Teal’c. Teal’c to me is a hero because he does what he believes is right, not because of what it could do for him, but because he believes it is right. He doesn’t fight for the freedom of his people to be lauded as a hero, he does it because he was shown what freedom was when he had been in hopeless despair and he wants the same for his people.

Still going out on a limb, O'neill had no ideaTeal'c would do what he did. He could see the expressions on teal'c's face but he didn't know if Teal'c would turn, and at that moment, all he could do was ask and hope he got it right and that Teal'c would agree. If he didn't they would be dead, last chance, going out on a limb with leap of faith and it worked

Teal'c saw a chance for redemption with O'Neill asking him for help. You could clearly see his heart and soul could no longer bare the atrocities he committed in the Apophis' name. He saw in O'Neill his only hope for freedom. That's why he turned. In Threshold, while Teal'c is agonizing in delirium during the Mal'Sharan rite, you can see the scene where he talks with Bra'tac in front of the prison gate, and that scene would chronologically fit just before Teal'c turns, where Teal'c said " They have that little something else, a strength, and they have the will for freedom. " to which Bra'tac responded while smirking " I reckon your dreams of freedom will end you my friend. " - " Perhaps, yes. " " Pray they don't choose them to become hosts. That's the best we can wish upon them. "

SG1 had an abundance of great heroes but I think Teal'c is truly the greatest of them all; and if anything this scene, his debut, absolutely proves it. Oniell and the Tauri are Heroes of circumstance. Not to lessen or dismiss them as protagonists or defame their virtue;but they arguably behave out of the necessity of survival against a sudden and insidious enemy. Teal'c is the real hero because he had to make a choice. A very important and courageous choice that benefited not only himself and his people but all peoples of the galaxy. He could have simply killed Colonel Oniell and the rest of them outright like it was nothing but he made the noble and selfless risk of forfeiting his position of power, stability, privlidge and saftey as first prime of Apophis to do the right thing and rebel against his enslavers and right the wrongs his character felt extreme guilt and cognitive dissonance for participating in. That's true heroism. The Tau'ri, the Jaffa and even the Asgard would have been eventually defeated and enslaved by the Goul'd were it not for his decision. That's why this scene is meaningful. Shout out to Christopher Judge for developing and portraying this character so perfectly. Especially as this was the first true episode of the series. He is entirely underrated as a performer and not only Teal'c but the franchise on the whole would not have been the same without him. I want him to know that.
@Phoenix-214
@Phoenix-214 5 жыл бұрын
Let's not forget what happened at the end of this clip. Teal'c stayed there waiting to die because he felt he wouldn't be welcomed by the people he'd helped to oppress. He honestly wasn't expecting O'Neill to welcome him back to Earth. He probably felt he didn't even deserve it. In the moment he turned on Apophis, he did so fully expecting to die afterwards just for the tiniest sliver of hope that the Go'auld could be defeated. He asked for nothing in return, not even his life, not even the safety of his own family.

Yeah the thing about SG1 and SGA is that they project the similar tactics that have been used throughout history. They keep an iris and keep the stargate in a closed and secure area in the case of infiltration. They also hide under their radar to discover technology and allies so that they don't alert them or concern them too much. Of course it was merely survival but they would still fight to the death against them like teal'c would. It is mostly luck but they do play it well and people that oppose the program realize that which is why they get alot of hate and problems but they are the most qualified to do these things.

It's interesting to see the characters not being fully developed as they turned out later in the show. O'Neil seems less like a joker and more caring and emotionally involved, Jackson seems way more emotional, teal'c isn't stoic at all and again emotionally involved. It seems for all the characters they flattened the emotions a bit, probably because the actors were let loose and giving their own interpretations of the characters. I'm willing to bet Richard Dean Anderson is also a bit of a funny sarcastic guy in real life. It's interesting to think about, the way he plays O'Neil here seems similar to how he played MacGyver. That character also was a very emotionally caring person, especially towards vulnerable people.

1:08 1:32 this Goauld was played by Adam Harrington, who later played the Tokra named Khonsu, who was undercover as a Goauld in "The Other Guys". In fact, in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, I'm just going to say my head canon is that it's the same guy. Throughout the course of the show I don't believe I ever saw another Tokra posing as a goauld that had risen high enough to have his own Jaffa force, even his own first prime, as well as his own Hatak vessel. To get to that level would have probably taken a number of years at least, and since "The Other Guys" was 5-6 years after this episode, the timeline fits.

One of the many things that I have always loved is the almost comical level of inconsistency with the power of Goul'd weaponry. We have seen those staff weapons hit people and cause easily survivable injury but at the same time they will also blow a hole in a wall. The first shot from a zat can cause you significant pain or just straight up knock you out. The ship based weapons will either vaporize another ship or cause small explosions on the ground that do very little damage. It's one of the few things that don't seem to matter to the continuity department. To be perfectly clear, I actually enjoy it. No sarcasm.
@among-us-99999
@among-us-99999 2 жыл бұрын
I think the SGC developed progressively better body armour against staff weapons over the years, while also getting more experienced at treating staff blast injuries. (and getting new tools, like the healing device) The ship weapons are probably adjustable to minimise collateral damage, or get dampened by the atmosphere.
@Blasted2Oblivion

@@among-us-99999 You raise some good points. Thinking back there was an episode where they actually point out the new armor that can save you from a staff blast at all but close range. This is amongst one of my most favourite scenes because if Teal’c never did what he did, chances are, SG1 would’ve been killed, SGC might’ve just buried the gate after that, then considering that Apophis knows about earth at that point, at some point, what’s left of SGC would’ve been killed and demolished pretty much the same way as that alternate reality. There would also never be an expedition team to Atlantis. Which means that Ronan would still likely either be a runner, working for the wraith due to the addiction, or died within a few more years after the moment that he should’ve met Shepard and the rest of the team. Tayla would still be with her people and possibly died as well while trying to protect them. Stargate Universe would never have happened either, meaning that they would not have been able to create that site that they had to abandon and the ship would not have been discovered by them. Not to mention that earth would not have been much of a blip on the Asgard’s sensors. So basically, where we had gotten with this series, a huge part of it is thanks in part of what Teal’c has done in this one moment.

maybe its just because ive seen the series and I know Teal'c but the look on Teal'c's face 2:25 is the face of s man who hates himself for doing what he does as first prime

I always liked the Jaffa staff weapons more than the Ori ones. The opening mechanism at the front makes them feel more like they're doing something.

Watching this I realise they redubbed Teal'c's lines for the final cut of Children of the Gods. He's much less gravelly in this, even with the off-audio.
@Jarsia
@Jarsia 4 жыл бұрын
I hated the final cut version of this scene. The music didn't have the same energy at all. Tealc didn't sound lost like here when he said he had nowhere to go. Here it was like he was saying "I've just thrown my whole life away", in the final cut it was more like "my landlord changed the locks". Finally O'Neill's plea to Teal'c carried a lot less weight in the final cut, like he was saying "You know the 2 of us could probably take these guys, just a thought". Here Jack saw a massacre was about to go down and and angrily says he can save these people, driving home the point that fighting back is an option to Teal'c who he saw was on the fence already. Following that was a forceful "help me", as if to say Teal'c has the power to stop this and if they die it's because he was afraid to act. Finally a quieter "help me" pleading with Teal'c to realize what's happening is wrong. Only thing they did better was speeding up the pace of them taking down the Kafka, as in the original version it feels like they completely ignored the only 2 threats in the room for way too long
