One of the best thing about Stargate was seeing the technological evolution of the Tau'ri. Before the Prometheus was built, we saw the SGC find naquadah and trinium mines on other planets, steal Goa'uld ships to analyze their technology, and even being gifted some components from the Asgard for helping them. Seeing the Prometheus take off for the first time in season 6 was the culmination of a great adventure, and it makes this ship even better.

They really nailed a very fine line between long-form plots where you have to watch every episode, in order, just to know what's going on, and a completely detached, episodic format where the adventures are mostly just loosely-connected short stories. Stargate had it both ways: most episodes are kind of one-offs that someone new to the series can jump into it almost wherever they want, but there is enough continuity for fans who are more invested to tell where almost any given ep fits into the overall timeline.

@@TheArklyte They deal with that diegetically: Area 51. There are several episodes where they actually go into that, bringing back some of those "OP" tech devices showing them being stored / tested / reverse engineered at Area 51. But that was introduced early in the show before they even knew if they'd have a show. They hang a comedic lantern on it in later episodes.

It's chunky. It's inelegant. It feels exactly like something the navy/airforce WOULD build, and while it is outgunned it isn't helpless, and while there is a technology gap it's... surprisingly small, and mostly being a matter of powerplants, with humanity squeezing what they can out of such a small power core due to ditching the ostentatious 'temple ship' concept and going for something more reminiscent of a submarine.

It might be one of your favorite ship-destruction scenes, but it still ranks low on the realism scale. The concept of a ship exploding when destroyed is based on wooden sailing ships with gunpowder magazines being detonated by fires. A spacecraft would not behave that way. It would crack apart and experience local depressurization blowouts, but even with nuclear weapons onboard it wouldn't explode, because nuclear weapons only explode when intentionally detonated in a very specific way -- haphazard explosions nearby won't do the trick. Having said that, the only realistic ship-destruction scene I've ever seen was in Firefly when the IAV Dortmunder destroyed a private ship that had been overrun by Reavers. Everyone else goes for the Big Kaboom for visual entertainment.

The introduction of that ship also changed the game in the show dramatically - with Earth no longer just confined to the Stargate network. And they did a great job pacing it's introduction and the eventual successors (which, I am sorry but I must admit, I do *love* the BC-404 design far more, particularly as an evolution on a prototype design) and how they began to change the dynamic of Earth's role in the galaxy and their capabilities. It's a shame they ended when they did, as it felt like the show was beginning to pick up into a place where the Tau'ri would be a major galactic power among several peers and possibly verging on having the gate program go public as increasing numbers of countries began getting their own 304s. I'm also sad we never got to see an F-305 or a BC-306. Maybe someday.

There’s a fanfiction story that crosses Stargate with the original XCOM game (by original I mean the one made in the 90s, not the remake). In it there’s a mention of a BC-305 (or 306, can’t remember) laying waste to the Aschen homeworld in an alternate future. The ship appears to use much of the tech discovered in both galaxies (including being powered by that system-destroying reactor McKay tried to tame) because the Aschen were being… well, the Aschen. This time it was the Aschen sending a message back to tell their past selves not to fuck with XCOM

Who knows, maybe the 305 might look Ancient in nature?

I think the other 30x ships would be more specialized designs. Both the 303 and the 304 are do-anything battlestar-like capital ships that could act as carriers, duke it out with other capital ships in a slugfest, transport cargo, personnel, etc... but after the success of the 304, Homeworld Command doesn't really need another one of that type, at least not for a while. So the 305 might be a smaller cargo / troop transport, kind of like the Tel'tak (but of course armed with at least a few railguns and better shields, because it's a Tau'ri ship after all). The 306 might be a dedicated carrier with an enormous through-deck hangar capable of carrying dozens of fighters (and maybe even the aforementioned 305 could fit inside) but somewhat lighter armaments than the 304. 307 might be a destroyer, kind of like Homeworld Command's version of the Defiant. Basically a pair of Asgard plasma beams (and some railguns and missiles) strapped to an engine. 308 could be a bomber / gunship specifically for supporting ground troops in situations where sending a 304 would be overkill. And finally the 309 might be a human-made puddlejumper (of course armed with A2A and A2G missiles and railguns, without retracting engine pods, and built with a shield). Possibly with a swappable mission module in the back. Then when they have a full array of vessels, they can start pushing upgrades to these in the 31x series (with the 311 being a Tau'ri needle-threader, and the 313 maybe a dedicated missile cruiser with extended missile magazines instead of hangars).

The thing that I like about Prometheus was that the show itself admitted that it was kind of meh jack of all trades ship that was mostly just a prototype/technology testing testbed. It was not a warship due to its weak armament and rather vulnerable design and yet was used as one, It wasn't a carrier due to having very small flight hangars for dozen craft at best with no extra facilities for maintenance, training and housing pilot crews and yet it was used as carrier, it wasn't a troop transport or drop ship due to lack of internal space, a sense of reentry capsules and rather lacking design of loading compartment and ramps and yet it still had to do. It wasn't Serenity or Bebop, but it still marked the part in the show where Earth had to improvise and make do and not the part where everybody else opposing USAF starting to roll up dead to their knees be it Goa'uld, Azurans, Replicators, Ancients or Ori.

@@singletona082 to elaborate further on what I've said, Daedalus can't be a good: 1)battleship since hull form didn't change. There are a lot of blind zones, the hull is not optimized for reserve systems and they are too afraid to invest tech into their main armament ie ICBM sized torpedoes. Irl ICBM has higher budget priority then even the best fighter plane. In Stargate they don't equip their torps with either shields or hyperdrives. Which leads to dumb situations like in Atlantis; 2)carrier because it has very small strike craft complement, lacks specialization of said strike craft into scouts, fighters, bombers, attackers and interceptors, lacks expanded crew quarters and training facilities, lacks onboard production facilities to produce ammo and components for strike craft, lacks an ability to rearm and refuel strike craft on the fly or outside ie tankers, doesn't have secondary flight control bridge; 3)support vessel/FOB because it lacks extended shuttle bays, lacks shuttles that would allow to lift cargo and vehicles, lacks onboard Stargate to connect to SGC for resupply, lacks space for vehicles and extra crew. Daedalus fixed nothing. It remained "jack of *no* trades", but this time without excuse.

Loved the design and evolution of the BC-303. It looked, and usually functioned, like the prototype it was. Only thing I feel they could have improved on would be the 303 kicking off a process that would lead to the gates becoming public. IMO, the construction of an interstellar battle cruiser, when combined with all the other off world tech, would require too much secrecy from too many people and too many groups to keep it secret. I absolutely LOVE this sort of lore about the Tau'ri in Stargate. Every single advancement in humanity's technology is __EARNED__ with nothing just handed to them. They had standard FN P90s and typical handguns. They learned, they developed, they reverse-engineered captured tech, they made alliances and it all took a reasonable amount of time. By the time Earth took down the Goa'uld, it felt legit that Earth _could_ take down the Goa'uld. Earth tech now actually outpaced the Goa'uld's (partly because the Goa'uld stagnated after seizing/reverse-engineering what Alteran tech they could, and partly because the Goa'uld never really came together in force against Earth until we had the means to fend off attack thanks to their society and some plot armor…) There are ways Stargate is technically deficient (fighters in space move like they're planes for example), but the worldbuilding is not one of them.

I'm glad that Stargate took the show "there". Meaning they allowed the Stargate program to actually show "fruit" in terms of technological advance. They didn't just try to keep the universe static with what worked in the first few seasons, but adapted and expanded to show progress. They did struggle a bit with the power curve, tho, and started to shift the show away from the people and more towards the plot and the drama. And the halo ones show how a lot of their ships sizes have been made up by wrongly assuming fans. For instance I have the autumn class at 585m (590 max) long, scaled to pelicans from shots we see in trailers etc, and have them scaled next to the 303 and 304. Or the scorpion being 8.7m long. Its quite interesting.

Wish the size specs were correct... If it was that small it couldnt fit one f302, let alone 8... The actaul vfx model size is, Length - 520m, Width - 250m, Height - 180m (175m not inc the antenna) And thats the size its shown at in the vfx shots.

Could you possibly answer this question: what’s the effective firing range of the rail guns in The Expanse? We know 1,000km is basically point blank for them, with no time for an enemy to react.
@N1lav3 жыл бұрын
Theoritically it is *INFINTE* because out in space Newton's Third Law is the biggest son of a bitch. " Objects in motion stay in motion until acted by an external force ". TLDR; Those slugs will hit someone somewhere and give them a bad day. This also applies to the PDC bullets.
@jimmyryan58803 жыл бұрын
There is no air in space so its infinite but the enemy has more time to move.
@tn_bluetick2313 жыл бұрын
@@N1lav I know they’ll go on until they hit something. But I’m talking about actively trying to shot a ship in a combat scenario. Like is 10,000km too far because the enemy has time to react?
@tn_bluetick2313 жыл бұрын
@@jimmyryan5880 I know the slugs will keep going. I’m talking like if the ship is 10,000km away does that distance give the target enough time to evade completely, or can you still lead it. If I remember right the ships in The Expanse can’t stop on a dime and can only turn so hard before you pass out.
@Mezinov3 жыл бұрын
What would you define as effective? If you simply mean the ability to hit a target and do damage their range is in practical terms limitless as once you have fired the projectile its velocity, and thus damage potential, will remain unchanged unless acted upon by a large bodies gravity or atmosphere. The suns radiation, interstellar gas, and 'cosmic wind' will all have an effect on the projectile over astronomical distances but unless you are trying to hit another planet in the local cluster this isn't really a concern. If you mean in ship to ship combat then you are limited by the enemies capability to maneuver and react. We don't know the Expanse railgun velocities but on Earth we tend to fire prototypes at 2-3km/s to find a balance between barrel wear and kinetic energy. That means anything within 2-3km will be hit within a second - so if you are firing at a ship completely controlled by a human you would have a high certainty of hit within that range envelope. There is the caveat that the average human reaction time is 250ms so assuming they detect and are alerted to the shot, and their ship is sufficiently mobile/responsive, they may be able to have effect on the point of impact of the shot by attempting maneuvers. A computer can react hundreds of times faster than a human and so if you are firing at a ship that can take autonomous evasive action then your range shrinks dramatically. If we assume the ship takes 10ms (a low, but not exceptional, time for modern computers) to detect the shot, calculate, and execute an evasive maneuver you are looking at an effective range of 200-300 meters for a guaranteed "hit where I shot" impact and a larger distance for a "hit the ship I shot at" impact which would be determined by the other ships mobility/responsiveness. Beyond the speed of the projectile the diameter of the projectile and the diameter of the specific target (for example; the enemy ships reactor vs the enemy ship captains coffee mug) will have great effect on your probability of damage. A large projectile fired at a large target will be more likely to produce a positive impact versus trying to fire a BB sized projectile at similarly sized target because even during maneuver there is a larger window in which the large projectile will overlap with a large target. So in the end for ship to ship combat your effective range will vary depending on the specifics of your railgun and the capabilities of the target.

I'm pretty sure the fighters leaving the wing pods was an animation error. The wing pods were the hyperspace window generators and the hangar was meant to be below the man fuselage. Basically the wing pods weren't wide enough to fit an F302.

The 304 is more sleek and seems betther thought out. The 303 had two engines while the 304 has more engines in a more distributed array, rhe bridge is also lower and closer to the center of mass and you can see an overall increase in "aerodynamics" and something less boxy

@@nahuelleandroarroyo I get that but you got appreciate what it represents its crude but it represents the first real functional design for earth. It's the first ship capable of interstellar travel, intergalactic travel and let's not forget the most important thing for us humans gravity. Already those 2 qualities make it a really good start considering.

Seeing USS Prometheus for the first time really made me screaming in joy since this was the first time Earth could've fought Goauld on equal footing instead of fighting a glorified guerrilla warfare and cowering behind daddy Asgard when thing gets tough That said I kinda realized(after rewatching SG-1) that before Asgard retrofit USS Prometheus is basically Hatak in different clothes. It uses primarily Goauld technology, uses Alkesh hyperdrive and like a Hatak, it was Earth's primary ship for space warfare. It can also house F-302 fighter like how Hatak could store death glider
