Starling and Herl Nymph (with hotspot) - Trout Fly Tying

An easy classic nymph, the Starling and Herl has been an effective trout fly for hundreds of years. This pattern can be fished as a lone nymph, as part of a two-fly rig, or swung as a wet fly.
Hook: #12-18 Nymph
Thread: Black
Rib: Gold or copper wire wire
Hotspot: Bright dubbing (ice dub) butt
Body: Peacock herl
Hackle: Dark starling wing feather
Savage Flies is a project (named after one of my homewaters, the Savage River in Western Maryland, US). I've been trout fishing for many years but have only been tying for the last couple and am learning more every week. If you have any pointers on techniques that would help, I would love to hear them in the comments.

Personally I really like the hot spot. Though I would probably tie it both ways. You already know my thoughts concerning the Peacock Hurl. Makes a great looking fly. Great video as well. Thank you Matt
