I’ve had Starlink for about 2 months now and I love it! Same situation, no other options other than HughesNet but it was expensive and slow…. Starlink is a total game changer for people in rural areas.

Good to hear you again. Have heard great things about these units and the service. Unfortunately just not in the right area for it.
@AquaeAtrae2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. But you probably want to clarify that "Starlink + Portability" ≠ "Starlink RV" in several important ways. An RV subscription will never get prioritized service and can be throttled due to congestion no matter your location. Adding Portability to normal service sill guarantees "priority service" when used at your home location (though that can be changed). Only the RV subscription can ever be suspended though you will still be billed for full-months' of service, no pro-rating. Both are effectively the same price and allow for roaming. Currently, one cannot switch subscription types so they have to choose either "priority service" vs "the option to suspend". ;)

Thanks for the clarifications on the fine points. One of the disadvantages of speaking off-the-cuff and not having a script when making videos - sometimes I miss things.
@AquaeAtrae2 жыл бұрын
@@Commsprepper Understandable. I'm considering Starlink to augment my off-grid emcomms options now that the Gen 2 dish reportedly runs with as little as 45W. The RV option is readily available now and can be suspended indefinitely after initial testing for a month. Seems a worthwhile investment.
@AquaeAtrae2 жыл бұрын
UPDATE: The FAQ was updated to suggest that Starlink + Portability customers will soon be allowed a one-way conversion to the Starlink RV service. They just won't be able to switch back. But at least those who already have it won't be forced to buy new hardware. ;)

Whereabouts in West Virginia I come down to the south west part of West Virginia Hatfield, McCoy Ashland resort area the beginning of the outlaw trails. I don’t know if that helps for location but I love your set up all my God I want to live in West Virginia, so bad, and I have a side-by-side.😅😅

West Virginia has some of the worst Internet glad to see someone is helping. People all over the world are going to have Internet soon. Remote villages in Africa will have Internet for their schools and towns using one or two dishes. Imagine streaming video from the top of Mount Everest.

If you don’t mind my asking did you get Starlink RV or their standard Starlink residential service? I’m asking because I just ordered the RV service and am wondering how well to expect it to work.
@Commsprepper2 жыл бұрын
I am not an RV user. I have a residential account but moved my unit away from the service address and I am paying for portability. It is my understanding (I could be wrong) that portability and RV users operating outside of the assigned service address may experience reduced performance to favor those folks assigned to that operating area. This said - my system has been working great.

@@Commsprepper agreed the the 7300 and Dr7400 scs modems are excellent. I’m active on amateur and SHARES. Using a 300 ft loop at 20-25 ft agl. Several of us in NC do peer 2 peer when time and schedules allow.

I've been waiting on my area to be added to the availably list, but I didn't know about the new RV set up. Since you went the RV route, did they ship it quickly?

I use two different address. service address where available, shipping address retreat. Then I activated portability. I believe this path is no longer needed with RV. But back to your question - I had the equipment in seven days.

You are still reliant on ground stations which Must be near the specified location.
@Commsprepper2 жыл бұрын
I believe routing changes to optimize performance.
@absolutium2 жыл бұрын
The communication process alternates nodes not because of "improved performance" but to avoid lost o sight from ground transmissions. Basically it works as a completely unnecessary mirror which does nothing but direct your signal to a nearby "tower".
