We got our Starlink "Better Than Nothing Beta" setup in the mail, and I figured that instead of doing one of those "unboxing" and assembly videos, I'd just get on a ladder during a minor wind storm and try to install this thing on the porch roof with some iron pipe and the pole mount kit. While the dish was plugged in. It'll be fine.

I'm in the same boat. Just pre-ordered, supposed to receive it mid to late 2021 (this year). It can't come soon enough. Currently our best option is CenturyLink DSL at 10 Mbps (max speed). They are starting to offer upgrade to a whopping 15 Mbps in our area, but my account is not eligible for upgrade. Will be glad to cut the cable to CL as soon as possible once I get Starlink up and running.

I've been addicted to watching starlink videos, Idk why. It is interesting to see how vastly different results people are getting with it. Most the vids I watched people were usually getting 70-90 mbps download on average and 20-25 upload and 18 - 30 ping and most of them were in extremely cold snowy locations. Its good to see that there's a way for people to enjoy getting city internet in the countryside and it can only get better with the 12000 satilites that r planned with only around 800 running currently.

You just plug it into a wall socket, plug an Ethernet cable from the Aux on the Starlink modem into it. Then, you plug another one into a wall socket in the room where you need internet. You can then plug a wifi router into it, giving you wifi in your dead area. Basically, it turns your house wiring into Ethernet cables. Way better than running lines everywhere!

I live in Northern Canada and saw another video of a guy in Calgary, Alberta, who actually broke his Starlink Satellite because he installed it on the roof (he set it up there with sand bags) and after a heavy snow fall the snow melted off the dish (which is heated) and turned into an ice waterfall freezing the dish to the roof and likely burning out the motion motors. He said Starlink was going to replace it free of charge, which is great, but it was a warning sign for me. I will be using both the Volcano Mount and the Pipe Adapter to make sure the dish lip is 3 or 4 feet from the roof surface so this doesn't happen. Micah's method would also work up here as well.

Any issues with the wind since you installed it?
@HomesteadBandwagon
@HomesteadBandwagon 2 жыл бұрын
No issues at all. We had another wind storm a couple days ago, and it's still in it's place. The occassiomal bird likes to sit on the dish, though. That can interrupt the signal.

We started seeing faster speeds pretty quickly. The service takes some time to learn how to hit the satellites efficiently, or something like that. We just posted a new update- kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJ-vc6uXi56dmJY

Starlink says to expect 50mb to start, with much faster speeds as they build out the satellite network. They already have a lot of coverage over the northern states, so those users should be getting higher speeds already.

How about mounting the dish on an existing plumbing vent pipe on the roof with that pole mount adapter?
@netwayne
@netwayne 3 жыл бұрын
It looks like the pole mount adapter he got from Starlink might fit over a plumbing vent pipe. I think I'd worry about tightening the bolts into the PVC pipe and also about the covering up that vent pipe somewhat with the installation kind of defeating the purpose of the vent pipe. Also, in an occasional high wind situation, think about the pressure on that big surface area dish that is secured to a PVC pipe.
@rickss69
@rickss69 2 жыл бұрын
@@netwayne Most pvc vents will be 2" or greater and no more than 18" sticking up from the roofline. That short of a piece would be as strong as metal. I believe one could overcome the vent concerns rather easily. The best part is no holes punched thru the roof and no need to remove when the time comes for roof replacement.

I know this is progress in general but this shit is 99$ per month. If he wants to get global with this it needs to be under 50$. Everyone would take it then. I would get it too. He needs to get quantity and compensate for money loss like that. This shit can kill all the greedy companies on ground very fast and leave them out of business.

@vashstampede8523
@vashstampede8523 3 жыл бұрын
@@HomesteadBandwagon Well in Europe data cap is thing of a past for years now. You get flat rate internet very cheap here. Its not the fastest (I have 30 Mbps down and 6 up for 30 dollars + cable tv in that pack). Problem here is that optical cables aren't installed on too many places. And Starlink is too expensive and inconsistent to be affordable. Guess that will change when they get more satellites in orbit but price is too steep. I dont understand the angle here. Is Musk trying to get Starlink to replace our every day internet or just to make it more available? Cause shit load of people around the world cant afford 99$ price tag for something that's not even working right.
