Hi Starlo. As an angler who bait drifts for Trout in streams I also keep my finger on the line. As it isn't always possible to walk backwards I lightly pinch the line between my thumb and index finger and retrieve the line through them. It has the benefits of keeping tension on the line as the bait drifts back towards you and also keeps the finger feel for any taps or takes. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Chris.

Nice work Starlo, unfortunately I couldn't catch a worm to save myself, just wondering on your choice of reel for beach fishing, i would of thought 2500 is to small, my lightest beach fishing reel is a 4000 just incase I land something big. Anyway hope you have a great Xmas.
@StarloGetsReel25 күн бұрын
@@peterwilson835 I quite like fishing light, although a 3000, with its extra line capacity, would probably be a smarter choice than the 2500. I find that the vast majority of fish I hook in the surf weigh between a couple of hundred grams and maybe 3 kilos, at most, so the smaller reels are perfectly adequate. I’ll probably come unstuck one day, though. 😉 Merry Christmas!

Starlo - a suggestion and a question. When rigging, filming lying on the bait is good, but please please each time after a first rig or change of rig, can you show the final setup and talk through the rig from top to bottom - lines, swivels, sinkers, hooks, floats etc and hold it up for a clear shot of the whole thing for a few seconds? I watch you and Roger a lot and learning heaps. But as I’m new to fishing (self learning at 53 ) there’s a lot of assumed knowledge when talking through rigs etc without showing. Until I’m familiar with all the right terms, equipment types, knots, sizes etc - describing just leaves me wondering the exact rig. A 30 second talk through and shot of the exact rig setup would be SO useful for newbies. Second - my question. Isn’t that ‘bench’ the rising tide is rolling over at the beginning the EXACT drop-off (over the bench edge) you’d want to cast into at full high tide?
@StarloGetsReel24 күн бұрын
Thanks for that! Some really good suggestions, too. I'll definitely try to incorporate a bit more of what you've suggested in future. It's a fine line though (pun intended), as the more experienced fishos tend to yawn, hit fast forward or skip to another video or channel when I show and explain a running sinker rig for the umpteenth time! Hard to please everybody, I guess... As for that "bench" I was indicating, it was actually high and (mostly) dry on the very top of a big high tide, so it's not going to go under, but I'm sure there are similar structures further out, under the surface. Cheers & Tight Lines!
@scoutylugs24 күн бұрын
@ thx Starlo. Even just holding it up for a clear full-rig shot of say 1-2 seconds without the need to explain each bit - you usually name it all as you go, and I totally get you don’t want to explain a running sinker each time (lol) - but if after you’ve spoken about the rig and baiting, just a clear shot of the whole rig and newbies like me can go back, reposted and look at a clear end result for a few frames. 👍 Cheers

Great info Starlo. Do you think there's an appreciable difference between an old fibreglass surf rod (like mine from the '70's) or the new Shimano spinning rods like the ones you're using? Any point in upgrading or is technique and practice 99% of the game and having the latest/greatest gear only a minor component? Thanks
@StarloGetsReel25 күн бұрын
Biggest differences are all-up weight, feel ,and responsiveness. Newer gear might not catch more fish, but it's a LOT more pleasant (and fun) to use, as well as being less tiring to stand and hold for a few hours. That Shimano Dialuna rod I was using probably weighs about as much as one section of your old glass rod. Personally, I'd find it VERY hard to go back and would probably fish less if I had to use heavy, old-school gear, but each to their own.

Hey Starlo, you talked about the perfect size salmon for eating; don't your dogs find a lot of bones in the small ones?
@StarloGetsReel13 күн бұрын
@@Onda-v1t those half kilo to kilo ones are way too good for dog food, although the dog certainly does love the bloodlines I trim from the fillets. The way I prep them, there are no bones in the finished pieces. It’s funny, most of the folks who diss’ Australian salmon as a table fish have either never actually tried them and relied instead on what they’ve “heard”, or have very little idea about how to correctly handle, prepare and cook fish… I’m wondering which camp you come from? 😉
@Onda-v1t13 күн бұрын
@@StarloGetsReel Hey Starlo, I'm in Port Stephens, one of your old stomping grounds. It's rare to catch the small ones on the beach here. We mostly hook the monsters that you're hoping are jewfish until they start jumping out of the water. I'm in the camp that has tried every cooking method, baking, frying, barbeque, etc. As you know, their nickname is fishcakes, but for all the fuss, I'd rather buy a can of tuna for the mix or even buy a frozen pack of Bird's Eye fishcakes. 😊 So for me, they are catch-and-release, but if you've got a good recipe (apart from fishcakes), I'm in the camp that listens. Yes, I did bleed them. Cheers.
@StarloGetsReel13 күн бұрын
@ all good. I guess everyone has different tastes. We just do the small, boneless pieces in breadcrumbs or panko crumbs and shallow fry. Nothing special. They’re delicious, in our opinion. But the bigger ones have much darker, stronger tasting flesh and you do need to do something different with them (or smoke them). I mostly let them go these days. 👍
