Mario 64 was probably the first video game I ever played as a toddler in 2003. It's a little hard to describe the sense of happiness I feel, seeing this game worked on in such a unique way with so much love. My jaw is officially on the ground, had no idea the GBA was capable of this

The new camera makes a MASSIVE difference!! People securely underestimate how much the camera does for a game’s feel. It’s one of the absolute most impactful elements!
@jsbarretto
@jsbarretto Ай бұрын
Agreed! That so many early 3D games had a fixed angle camera is unfortunate. One of the things that made SM64 so groundbreaking was the dynamism of its movement, and the camera was a big part of that. It's important to me that I replicate that same feeling here.
@Arcad3n
@Arcad3n Ай бұрын
@@jsbarretto Yeah! And the way the camera zooms and shakes during special animations like opening key doors or dying is still so uniquely high quality to this day. It’s wild that Nintendo’s first n64 game set the bar so high.

@elio7610
@elio7610 Ай бұрын
@@jsbarretto the problem is that the player's control over mario's movement is relative to the current camera angle, so if the camera angle changes then mario starts changing direction too. this can be very annoying when the camera automatically and unexpectedly changes angle while the player is navigating a dangerous area. this can be solved either be having mario's (or any other character) movement direction instead tied to something other than the camera angle or by the camera angle only change when the player makes it change. it is not necessarily something to worry about in this project since this project is mostly just replicating the original SM64 experience rather than improving it or anything but i am just saying. i actually found this problem more noticeable in Gex: Enter the Gecko than SM64 but it is an issue in both.

This comment 100% on the mark. Sonic 1, 2, 3 are better games with widescreen, purely better and that’s completely true. My favorite cameras in video game history are the pikmin 1, 2, 3, and 4 cameras. They are freeing and forgiving yet limited, very elegant

@jsbarretto 14 күн бұрын
@@Mrcoconutgun I'm not really sure what you mean by 'proper' here
@Mrcoconutgun
@Mrcoconutgun 14 күн бұрын
@@jsbarretto I'm referring to 32 bit consoles of the 90s, namely the playstation one and sega saturn. They're able to render basic 3d models, the gba on the other hand is not capable of that. I've always thought of the gba as an upgraded super nintendo (16 bit console) in terms of graphical capability. The nintendo ds is much more of a "proper" 32 bit handheld than the gba. No hate on the gba though! It was my first handheld, and some of my fondest gaming memories are with it.
@jsbarretto
@jsbarretto 14 күн бұрын
@@Mrcoconutgun But the fact that they're 32-bit doesn't really have anything to do with their ability to render 3D graphics. Sure, it might *help* if you can manipulate a fractional value in a single register, but it's perfectly possible to write 3D games without that. The difference between the DS and the GBA is primarily that the DS has hardware support for polygon rendering, but again: nothing to do with the side of the registers.

@JoshuaBarretto The model also actually used LESS polygons than the OG 64 model (thanks to optimization), so helpful for performance as well.

Projects like these show that the software is always AGES behind the hardware. Stunning work!

Imagine how groundbreaking this would have been if it was released during the Gameboy Advance's lifetime.

With the new camera and animations, this is the first version that i think starts to "feel" like Mario 64. Amazing work 👍

I was struggling to see how this would look on an actual GBA, and the picture-in-picture view gives you a good idea. It looks pretty damn good when you shrink the window down. Either way this is incredibly impressive and truly exciting. The GBA is probably my favorite device to date so it's amazing to see it continue to get love.

I feel like the hud/sky and game world should probably be rendered at the same resolution, the noticeable disconnect between what you can see in the 3D world and on the hud/sky just feels a bit jarring IMO very minor nitpick though, overall this is crazy impressive
