And Philip Quast is an absolutely amazing actor as well as a fantastic singer. He should have been the movie Javert.
@malachimizori3058 жыл бұрын
RC's version of Javert is also different. My first les mis experience was the movie so I didn't have any bars to hold the actors to, but I know Crowe said he wanted to bring a different purpose and reasoning to the character. I think his version of this song in the movie is much more mellow, but it fits the Javert that he portrays. Quast has a very powerful voice and it was clearly meant for broadway. His performance of this song is brilliant, and I'm sure he plays an amazing Javert on the stage. And in this video it looked and sounded cool. But I still think the version Crowe did was meant to be more mellow to and sadder toned. I think it fits the setting of the movie and the way we see Javert portrayed.
@ComedyLoverGirl7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Crowe's Javert is a sad, cold, miserable and broken man who definitely doesn't love himself and probably doesn't find much meaning in life aside from his job (his tendency to walk on the edges of buildings, apart from foreshadowing his death and showing his faith in God, also shows his disregard for his own life). I think Crowe wanted to create a different take on a famous character, so he played to his strengths of having a lot of magnetism for sympathy, whereas the Broadway actors are much louder and more bombastic, usually portraying a Javert that is the passionate, zealous, and intimidating law enforcer, which is rather more similar to how he is portrayed in the novel.
@charliecampbell68514 жыл бұрын

This is very well done. I saw Quast when he first played Javert in London in the regular production. I went back soon after, just to see him again. He was always the best, and a favourite with the audiences, hence being picked for the Tenth Anniversary. Crowe was never going to be the same, but I liked his presence, even though the voice did take the edge of my enjoyment of the movie. And bear in mind that Quast was also too old for the part by the time the movie came out. He sang in the 10th anniversary concert in 1995. By the time the movie rolled around in 2012, he was already in his mid-60s. Javert is 35-52 years old during the course of the story. Colm Wilkinson, who plays Jean Valjean in the 10th anniversary did appear in the movie, he was the bishop since he was also too old to reprise his role. A lot of the lovely ladies were the same actresses from the 10th anniversary concert though, since they were bit parts and their ages less important.

They should do this to the entire movie wherever Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Sacha Baron Cohen are singing. Hell, if the strings were up to this level in the movie, it would still be way more impressive without changing anything that Russell did... The live orchestra from Quast's version of this song just blows the movie version out of the water with the string swells, like at 1:55 in the video. I'm guessing the people who made this film decided to calm down the song to make it easier on Russell and cover up his vocal flaws.

+Racie Mae Crowe's interpretation of Javert made the character a cold, broken man who harboured a lot of sadness and didn't find much meaning in life apart from his work, and couldn't empathise with other people. He acts accordingly, being a stone cold character who only gets emotional in a few key scenes. Quast, and most of the other stage actors, portray a more passionate and arrogant Javert who is the ruthless and zealous law official. I think Crowe tried to bring some of his own charisma for sympathy into the character because he wanted to do what he does best and bring out another version of Javert, a classic character. With mixed results, of course. He kind of woobified the character too much.

@@fairfeatherfiend Well remember, he was born inside a jail, the son of a convict and a gypsy. He hated his parents and the people he grew up around, that's what motivated him to become such a law fanatic. There's definitely a lot of insecurity in the character though from how he was raised, that when he ends up losing faith in the law he literally kills himself, because he had nothing else to live for.

you guys have to remember that russell crowe isn't a broadway regular. So yea, his voice might not be as developed and as opera sounding or whatever as the other guy, but stop being so hateful. It was something he got to do for the movie and he loved it, it's not like he performed it every night and projected his voice for a large theater on the regular. I know people like Philip Quast better, and I can agree that his voice is far better for broadway stuff, but I also like Crowe's voice in the movie and think he did a good job with what he had. People are always going to be upset when their broadway favorites don't make it into the screen adaptations, but you don't have to be so harsh on the actor who filled that spot. They're just filling that spot on film, it's not like Crowe is going around trying to be Javert on broadway across the world and claim he is the best or anything. Haters are going to hate I know that, I just wanted to say something positive for Crowe for once since everyone seems to be against him. I think he did well in the movie and enjoyed himself. Either way, the movie is done and you can't change it.
