Because if you read the book you know it's not that good. It's only loosely (and poorly) adapted. That's why the tiny unrealistic nukes are in the movie. In the book the mech suits they piloted in the Mobile Infantry had backpack launchers.

@Biggus Dickus I always thought star ship troopers in particular compared idealised societies. The bugs represent a fully functioning form of communism, unlike humans they are actually capable of fully devoting themselves to the collective and thus form a functional example of such a situation. (I like the idea of the bugs declaring war on humanity because they cannot understand the idea of the actions of the colonists not being an action of the whole human race). Humanity is in a form of functional fascism (there is no need for an hostile 'other', instead they glorify service) essentially elevated the idea of service to a near sacred role.
@VadulTharys4 жыл бұрын
@@Enourmousletters Only in this movie, in the book it is very different. Military service is seriously discouraged. Everyone has equal rights but only those willing to sacrifice for the whole are allowed to vote. It is not just military service, they actually do everything they can to prevent people from joining the military, and anyone who chooses to serve in the military can resign at any time they choose. Another issue I have with this is that the totally whitewashed the characters, there were very few whites in the book. Johnny (Juan) is Pilipino, Zim is Chinese, nearly all the main characters were not white. The director never read the book and just slapped the name on a movie to show his intense hate of the writer and the ideas the writer put forth in the book. The basic idea in the book is all citizens have equal rights, but to vote you must serve the community, be it in a work group like the peace corps today, or as civic engineers helping maintain infrastructure or other non military jobs. That is where they encourage people to serve, and those who choose to join the military are actively encouraged to quit. Yet those who stay evolve into a devoted intensely trained force. They never leave a man behind (in the book yes women were serving as well), and are fanatically loyal to each other, the unit, but are encouraged at all times to question superiors. One of their final tests as officer candidates is to find something in the military and challenge it even going so far as to have other officers arrested for criminal acts. Heinlein's book is the exact opposite of fascism and is highly critical of it, as it is of communism and liberal democracies. It is about only those willing to serve the community being able to vote or hold office, and only those who showed they were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the community could hold high office. That is nearly identical to how the privilege of voting was granted in the UK and US until the late 19th century. Only men who served in the military were granted the right to vote, or those holding large estates, or running large companies. The idea is that the average person who does not have a vested interest in how the government runs will vote for whoever promises them free stuff. Where those who have served the community know the costs and realize there is nothing free.

A big part of the reason why the film wasn't as popular at the time is because it's based on one of the big classics of mid-20thC science fiction, but it's tonally very different. So when the film came out most fans of the book HATED it, while the people who would like it saw all the "based on a book by" advertising and didn't go. The book does a much better job of explaining why their society works the way it does and it isn't really about everything being militaristic. That's just the main character's perception.

I saw this movie when I was a kid (three times in the theaters!) and only looked at it as a fun, straightforward, gory sci-fi action movie but it's such a clever film with a great take on anti-fascism. The sad thing is that by the end, Rico and his friends have totally bought into it.
@nerofl894 жыл бұрын
Weird take considering the society wasn't fascist. Verhoeven never read the book, but thankfully it seems the writers did. The political system was a republic, the civilians have economic and societal freedom, and service was entirely voluntary and intentionally discouraged so as to weed out people who were simply looking for easy power. The movie often displays things out of chronological order which if played in chronological order shows that the bugs are the clear aggressors and the human were simply reactionary. The only thing "fascist" about their society was the uniforms and that was because that was how Verhoeven wanted them to look like.
@BuckRodgers34 жыл бұрын
@@nerofl89 Both the book and the movie are really divisive the movie because Verhoeven wanted to satire a fascist government and the book because Heinlein saw Militarism as the way to fight against communism and moral decline It's fun reading the Wiki for the book it has spawned so many discussions about politics and is considered the father of U.S. Military Sci-Fi you can understand how it took a dude that had been alive for both world wars, served in the Navy, and was in the midst of the cold war when writing this.

@@CliffuckingBooth 'Fascism is a form of far-right, authoritarian ultranationalism characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition and strong regimentation of society and of the economy which came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe.' From memory, that's all in the movie(or very close on same aspects), along with the uniforms, flags, copying the visual style of Nazi propaganda films, schools teaching things like "the failure of democracy", people aren't citizens & can't vote until they've done military service. This is also semi-hidden in the movie: 'tucked away in a galactic broadcast, you'll hear that humans started the entire conflict by colonising an off-limits galactic sector - ie, we invaded, and when the bug inhabitants defended themselves, we declared all-out war. ' Sure, it diverts in some ways, and extremist governments often circle around & tend towards the same things(eg: controlling & militaristic) The director(who grew up in the Netherlands under Nazi occupation) & screenwriter have said it was anyway. The book the movie is based on is widely viewed as pro-fascist, and they decided to play the movie against that as satire. eg: '‘I borrowed from the films of Leni Riefenstahl to show that these soldiers were like something out of Nazi propaganda. I even put one in an SS uniform.' “Our philosophy was really different [from Heinlein’s book],we wanted to do a double story, a really wonderful adventure story about these young boys and girls fighting, but we also wanted to show that these people are really, in their heart, without knowing it, are on their way to fascism,” Verhoeven said.'
@DoubleMonoLR4 жыл бұрын
@@nerofl89 It doesn't need to be identical to a stereotypical version of fascism to be a satire of it. The Director & screenwriter previously made Robocop which also contained satire. Why would they give Starship Troopers obviously Nazi-like uniforms & flags & speeches & propaganda(even the filming style on occasion) if they weren't trying to satirize it? They apparently exaggerated aspects of the book to amplify the satire. The director grew up under Nazi occupation, so understandably he has more reason than most to want to satirize it. The movie is pretty clearly not intending the viewers to simply view it as an action movie with the usual heroes. Anyway, both the director & screen writer said it was a general satire on fascism and right-wing American politics of the time. eg: From the movie commentary: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJyyopytmr6ZrbM Also an excerpt of the screenwriter talking about how they echoed the nazis(particularly young people joining before realizing they were getting into the wrong thing) in the movie: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGrLoZSrrt-rqKc

I would strongly suggest to look up some of the deep dives on the Starship Troopers movie. There's so much more to it than what's on the surface of it. Same with most of Paul Verhoovens movies. A lot of social commentary in the form of satire.

That’s friendly fire. Nope, no such a thing as friendly fire. Remember any bullet or missile heading your way, ain’t friendly.

Yes! I’m trying to find a reactor to react to that as well... it’s such a great movie with so many reaction-worthy moments.

Weird question... why is everyone calling it "Leon: The Professional" instead of just "The Professional" as I grew up know it as. There is also a Movie with Samuel L. Jackson called "Formula 51" but the new name is "The 51st State". I've never heard it called that before.

I remember when this came out, freaking loved it, all my friends did to. Kinda never realized it wasn’t popular 😂. The sequels mostly suck although there is one that’s a bit closer to the book in terms of the power armor. The cartoon had an odd animation style but was really dang good. That said the movie is so different than the book they are essentially alternate versions of each other. If you haven’t read the book I highly recommend it, really good read.

Two things: 1. Thanks for pointing out that the biology teacher is Blanche from Golden Girls, didn't know that and 2. Thanks for saying that Diz is way better looking than Carmen cause it's true. Plus Diz and Rico seemed to have better chemistry.

I love that the style of armour shows up again in a Power Ranger series, Megazords vs Alien Bugs, I think there are several series with that premise Modern political discourse (bugs with intelligence)

Fun movie but I wish they stayed a bit more true to the original Robert A. Heinlein novel. It takes place about 700 years from now. Society developed after the fall of 20th century Western democracies and developed into one run by the militaries. The novel is much more philosophical than the movie (which is,admittedly, mostly action). If you like really good science fiction books, most anything by Heinlein is good. Of course, he wrote the seminal classic "Stranger in a Strange Land" as well as "The Moon is a Harsh Misress" and "Time Enough for Love" among others. Well worth your time.

Well, to be fair, the movie wasn't originally an adaptation of the book. The movie was well into development when they got the rights to Starship Troopers. So they added a surface gloss from the book - lifted some scenes, some terminology, character names, etc. And Verhoeven couldn't even be bothered to read the novel. It's one of the things I love about this movie. It's made by people who don't understand the book, thinking that they're making a satire of a future fascist police state, but they inadvertently lift enough from Heinlein that they undermine their own satire. So their attempts to make a bad, satirical adaptation of Heinlein winds up being an awesome adaptation of Heinlein. Heinlein beats Verhoeven, and Heinlein wasn't even trying.
