As a teen it went right over my head. It was just soldiers fighting bugs. Watching it now it's incredibly on the nose. The outfits, the war propaganda commercials, the school scenes teaching war...it's far from hidden. No doubt they'll get a hundred comments about it.

Earth is a peaceful planet where everyone can live how they want and live in luxury, even officials are elected former military. Joining military service is not encouraged and in fact they do everything they can to discourage people. It's something you have to want and be willing to fight for, that is one of the points of the book. People in government should be those that know the sacrifice and cost of war, so they choose when to enter a war very very carefully. Verhoven didn't read the book and didn't understand what the book was even about, it's why he passed the book on to the guy that helped him write the story.

And the hilarious thing is that the book was written to be a social commentary on who should have the right to vote, rather than 'all has the right'. It's a powerful thing after all to have political influence and we happily give it to everyone that's a citizen of voting age... yet you have to go through hell to get a driver's license (and it's not exactly cheap either), etc.

Another viewpoint--held clearly by the movie makers--is that the idea of having a military controlled government is most concerning and worth attacking with satire. And driving a vehicle isn't some ultra important right, and having to study for and pass a test isn't exactly having to "go through hell."

Old people that votes the same political party they did back in the 50s or 60s cuz they always voted that even tho the political party is very different today, thus their vote is harmful for the intended election. And nope, the movie maker never read the book except for like an overview of 3 pages worth of info. If you've read the actual book you'd know that the setup for it is that the political system they have WORKS: that's why it's still kept. Nothing better has arrived that keeps the same low unemployment rates, high living standards, etc. etc. It's like how if you want to own a gun, you really should be able to prove that you SHOULD own such a dangerous thing and know how to handle it and when NOT to handle it. Same should go for the right to vote.

@@ScaredPale In my opinion, the best is comining both, practical effects and CGI. One advantage of using only practical effects is, that you are limited to a certain degree. A lot of modern Hollywood movies overuse CGI to a degree, where the story and characters become burried under an avalanche of CGI. Sometimes it seems, more engery was put into superficial visuals than into writing a decent script or even coming up with a story that‘s worth being told. And I also strangely feel, that a lot of recent movies looked far too fake, even though the technology has evolved and the CGI stuff should look more realistic than in used to.

Much of it actually was CGI... they just knew their limitation of the technology of the time and used models and practical effects when it was necessary. But still... the rendering and compositing of the CGI at the time was absolutely state of the art and some of the best at the time. That’s also why it holds up today.

7:30 Funny thing with the lashing scene is, the book goes on and on about how and why corporal punishment became the norm in that society, even outside of military settings. People who were flogged, rather than serving a years-long prison sentence were less likely to be repeat offenders, and faced less discrimination, as the punishment was a once-and-done thing, instead of marking them as an ex-con permanently.

For what it's worth I wasn't trying to idealize this approach. The society described on the book idealizes violence to a huge degree in many ways, and while fascinating to read about it, it's fairly obvious why it wouldn't jive with actual human nature.

No. The location of the first part of this film takes place in Brazil or nearby country. A whole buncha people from the Axis ran to South America, especially Brazil, which is why there are a lot of Europeans with Latin (and Axis member) names. They had a huge communal affect on the countries where they settled, with many becoming the upper and elite class. This is likely at least part of the reason the costumes reflect the history of the people who became a part of, and changed, the fabric of Latin American life in Brazil and other countries. Just adding a bit of history into the mix. Thank you for the fun video.

And together with those uniforms it visually seems to be called that. Most people do not undestant what fasism or nazism is in its core, they are happy just to be tolt it is bad, not carrying how and why. So I understand why they may call this movie that way. Lack of knowledge (which is actually one of the problems the book calls out and make you think about) Lets face it - this movie is bad parody of that book. They took the least important plotline that takes like 10% of the story, mixed it with propaganda that have nothing to do with that book, made nazi looking uniforms, shoot it like a parody of all of it and send it to the theaters. The only time they actually took something at least a little bit important from the book is the school lesson at the begining of that movie. Shame that lead to nowhere there. Because that was one of the main things of the book. To show you the good and the bad in every decission. Make you thing. To learn. Becaouse learnigh history and psychology is basicly what this book is about. (With some mention of some random war agains bugs here and there just as reminder that you are reading scifi.) Don't take me wrong. I like this movie. It is kinda guilty pleasure one for me. I like how it is weired. But it have no important message like the book. You cannot take it seriously. This movie ages like fine wine oddly enough, or it's just that the older you get and as things change during the decades, the movie kinda becomes more and more meta. The movie was definitely ahead of its time with its satire and even its effects, but I feel its humor fits well with every generation growing up and especially older ones where the world was kinda seen through these misty "everything is great" glasses and anything that was upfront, honest and had dark humor surrounding it was more "in the dark". Nowadays however that's way more out there and mainstream, and everything horrible happening is viewed in a more nihilistic humor this movie is fits so well into.

I think you guys are completely missing the real thrust of Verhoeven's work, because he is not simply making popcorn action flicks. All three of the movies of his that you've watched are extremely satiric, and very critical, at various times, of almost every element of American popular culture. I think that this is because he came to America as a foreign adult, and thus was able to see how much of popular american culture, when taken to its extremes, becomes inherently fascist. The similarity of the uniforms in Starship Troopers have with SS uniforms is not a coincidence.

Verhoeven's childhood home was near a Nazi military base that was bombed by the Allies, and he remembers housing burning and bodies in the street. He and all of his work is absolutely obsessed with fascism and resistance to fascism, how the media makes violence appear sexy, and how people succumb to fascist ideologies without realizing it. If you pay attention, it's clear that the bugs are the victims of a relentless war of aggression from the humans and are simply trying to defend themselves. The fact that so many people thought the film itself was promoting fascism still confuses me.

"I'd buy that for a dollar" and the way everyone seems to find the stupidest possible television show hilarious, the way newscasters report on regular national tragedies as if they're reporting the weather, and the way the fancy new car is called the 6000 SUX are only a few examples of the movies' brilliance.

I like the think that the asteroid was random, it wasn't sent by the bug. If you look at where the arachnids section is and where humans are, that's a huge distance. So for the arachnids to throw an asteroid that far with that much precision is incredible, incredibly unlikely. It probably took thousands if not millions of years to reach Earth. I think the asteroid was random but the humans used it as an initiative to drive forward their militaristic ideas. it's been done before in the past, sure as hell seems like something the people in this movie would do.

One of my favorite sci-fi movies ever. The Oscar nominated visual effects still look great today and awesome soundtrack by the late BasIl Poledouris( who also composed for Conan the Barbarian and Verhoeven's Robocop). What a fun movie. It's so unique, and I love how it kind of comes back on you in terms of satire. I think it's interesting that the movie infers that the bugs started the war, but it was most likely caused by humans. Like, maybe if we didn't try to occupy their planet, they wouldn't try to throw meteors at us.

They do show that earth is in a war with these bugs, and that this system works well to fend off the bugs. It's effective. You kind of feel patriotic while watching it. Glad you enjoyed it. The acting was deliberately over the top and brainless, as I think he was trying to show the stupidity of war and the human desire to invade and use militaristic patriotism to induce young people into pointless battlefields. In a way this follows a similar path to All Quiet On The Western Front as a satire, except it has nude scenes and CGI in the sci-fi genre. I'm glad that you felt you understood what the director was trying to do in this movie, rather than just judging it as a trashy action movie :) I like that it can be enjoyed as silly entertainment as a witty social commentary on America and xenophobia.

So far as Verhoven's three sci-fi movies go, this is my favorite. Robocop second and Total Recall a distant third. A friend of a friend worked for the company which did the practical bug effects for this movie, so I had occasion to be in the workshop where (among other things) the full-scale prop for the brain bug's face and head was. That thing is huge- seems like it was as large as the front of a Mac truck.

I love this film, my favourite Verhoeven movie, it's a brilliant subversive satire that delivers the action. Though funnily enough I get caught up in it every time and completely unironically agree that Dizzy is super fine match made in heaven for Rico, and Carmen is a shameless, heartless wench! Fun fact, all the special effects wizards were due to be drawing unemployment on completion of the film as their effects studio was being dissolved, so they went the extra mile and busted their ass pretty much doing unpaid overtime to deliver some of the greatest effects ever, so as to make the film an industry calling card to show what they were capable of. It worked, and for me Starship Troopers has special effects that still looks better to my eyes than most stuff today.

In this film Michael Ironside had both his legs cut/chewed off and he was missing one arm in the first half of the film, (later on he got a bionic replacement).

2nd one we don't talk about. I'll give the 3rd one props for actually continuing the story (not accurately but at least something is happening) but the low budget absolutely killed the film. 1st animated movie is solid but is something most people have overlooked as it's pretty much completely unrecognizable if it wasn't for the title on the package. 2nd animated film I do somewhat have mixed feelings on. Although I do feel I would like it more on a rewatch. Actions scenes in it were great though and so was the voice acting was on point especially if you liked the dynamics in the original Starship Troopers film. I do enjoy the advancement of internal political affairs though and how corrupt it is.

Fun fact, the starship troopers body armor stuff is used for the military folk dude in Firefly. :3 Also the missiles you see them fire? tactical-use nukes. It's like Oxygen-fusion design or some such iirc. Aka. it's made from a non-radioactive material that is capable of low-yield fusion. It's not even a kiloton range it's like just 'tonnage' yields.
