The reason the cgi looks so good here is because of Phil Tippett, one of the great pioneers of modern effects work alongside Stan Winston and Rob Bottin. He also worked on Robocop doing the ED-209 stop-motion effects and then learned and oversaw the cgi animation for Jurassic Park. All the animation, rendering, compositing was done solely by ONE effects house, Tippett studios, under Phil's supervision and in close collaboration with the director Paul Verhoeven. Back in the 90's there were only a handful of effects houses and only 2 or 3 that could do cgi as it was still fairly new. Whereas now, there are hundreds if not thousands of cgi "studios" all competing for film projects and for the most part, the studios will hire whoever is cheapest and can deliver to deadline (the post production process is also much shorter now and effects companies are given far less time to complete shots). You may have several different effects houses in other cities, even other countries, doing different scenes and different jobs (animation, compositing, etc) and probably with very little communication with the producers or the directors. So by the time the finished effects shots come in, it's too late to correct or fix any problems because the studio has a release date that can't be pushed back because they've spent the majority of the budget on advertising and marketing. Which is probably why so many modern movies have such badly done or unfinished looking effects.

Don't need a AAA game for this. They have a game out right now that's very close to being starship troopers. It's called EDF 5 or you can get EDF iron rain. Both are good and you kill hordes of big alien bugs. Sadly they are big ants, spiders, robots and flying saucers but still terrifying when you have to fight through hundreds of then at a time. It's on PC and PS4. If that's not good enough for ya then the people who made EDF should be the ones to make it. Them or the ones who make a game called Serious Sam.

fun fact: the tower MGs are hybrids of 2 different guns, its a Browning M2 fitted with modified soviet DShK barrels, during the time of the movies production only the barrels were available and not the whole gun, so any DShk you see in any US movie that have them could be either the hybrids, mockups that look like them or real deals, some examples is the horrible mockup one from the 1984 red dawn which was a M60D with a long ass thin barrel, the 1998 film soldier which had hybrids mounted on the crawlers when they attack Arcadia 234 and Rambo 3 which had and actual DShK since it was filmed in israel, (they captured tons of them during the wars against the arabs), a rare sight on US films of that era but then had a mockup when filming was moved to the US
