It’s a beautiful instrument. I sat in front of mine today making a drone - my foot was tired so I put a weight on the sustain pedal - I thought that I was there for half an hour but in fact I so lost track of time that it was three hours! I’d lusted after the PPG sound for years , really since I first heard one when they came out, but I could never afford one until this recreation. Thanks for the video, I really enjoy your take on these machines.

Excellent overview. I had access to an OG in the 90s, which I was told to "learn how to program" by John Arbiter (This was at Turnkey) as they had a unit in to sell. It was a beast, and such a unique sound. If they made this in a compact mini form, I'd get it in a heartbeat, simply no space left in the studio, but a great demo of a great instrument, which Behringer have nailed

@@lundsweden I think it was the sample I was using was better paced as a short literal transient - a choir tone, but it sounded weird on the loop point. I've since tried using other samples like DX7 bass, Rhodes piano, grand piano and it's working. So it was probably the sample not being the best - it's not a sampler after all. I can do a short choir tone but not a sustained one ...yet!

Behringer crushed it with this. People seem to really like this Wave. So far, I've only heard good things about them in the forums and the FB pages, which is weird because Behringer is sort of known for having glitches, bugs and hardware issues on their first run of machines. I heard a couple people complaing abouth the knobs being to easy to spin. not loose or wobbly, but like frictionless guitar knobs. I think Behringer really did the work and put out a great synth, we'll see as more people get them, but I like what I've seen. I'm a really stingy cheapo, but I'm seriously considering getting one. Behringer is so ramped up/ backed up production wise (partially due to that chip shortage) that they keep releasing something more tantalizing than the thing they just released. Stairsteps in the waveform aren’t only accurately depicted in imaging, its also what they look like with low sample rate and bit depth. The cause of the stairsteps in the different cases are different so they end up sounding different, but the steps are what cause the higher frequencies associated with lo resolution digital sounds. Whenever you have a sharp edge in the time domain, you get higher frequencies. I think a lot of people saw that video from xiph “debunking” the stairsteps in digital audio, which was misleading because I'm pretty sure they were talking specifically about consumer digital audio products, trying to debunk the "analog is better" mentality. But you absolutely do have stairsteps in the waveform whenever you hear aliasing, quantization, and interpolation artifacts. And actually, there are many consumer grade products, mostly vintage tech, that produce the stairsteps. Just not like CDs and stuff... for the most part lol

Great video, and I appreciate the tech talk. I have an (ultimately useless) question, but one that has been nagging me irrationally: are the number pad buttons and the right side buttons actual mechanical keyboard buttons, (switches/keycaps, etc?) Just curious, I'm in the states, so the Wave is still a couple months out, shipping-wise. I try to nudge the volume up at specific points on all the Wave demo videos so i can maybe hear the sound the keys make when pressed, but to no avail haha.

Someone else has asked that, or at least mentioned the buttons. They feel like an old computer - maybe a little softer. @@StarskyCarr yeah the lack of a click could just mean this Wave uses mechanical linear or tactile switches instead of clicky, which uses an additional mechanism on the stem or bottom housing - the same as it was in the past & today! I’ll try to put it up against the M and 3rd wave when I get the chance. The comparisons always take a lot longer as I have to get things bang on between them which take a lot of time. If I’m even slightly off I take a hammering 😂

Hi mate. Thank you for your video. I'm an amateur musician. I don't know much to be honest but would this synth help me in getting me closer to the early to mid eighties tangerine dream sound? I know they used them a lot. Budget wise I'm looking at this or the korg modwave. Sorry for the annoying question. Thank you. Best wishes.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 9 күн бұрын
They did use the PPG, and folks have asked if I could emulate some of the tones. I'm not sure it's the first Id pick up though. If you're on a budget the ModWave probably has more to offer, but may not sound quite as crunchy.

most users are probably unfamiliar with the Hardware PPG - maybe the VST - so the expectations are wide open; i'd think it can do the Fairlight ARR1 & TalkTalk "It's my Life" Patches (Roland RS-09 & Jupiter) all just OK. Fantastic for the price , tho

Is the mini OLED screen *just* showing the wave, or is it used in any meaningful way in the UI? (Hoping not, since I'm much more likely to buy this if it doesn't rely on a cheap fragile OLED to function.)

already own and love the waldorf M, but this sounds like it can do a LOT of the same textures and timbres. not as deep modulation i guess, but it has a lot of the same elements or components and digital algorithms combined with the analog filters/vcas i would be torn if i didnt already/currently own the M

It's fine, nothing 'bad' about it, but if you're a connoisseur of keybeds it might not be up to your exacting standards. It's much better than my mates clicky original. Its very subjective so I'm scared to give it marks out of 120!

after playing with it some more... I find it hard to play anything gently without missing notes. It's a little bit spongey to do anything really delicate. Fine for bashing out chords with no velocity.
