I'm not an overlander, but as a backpacker/hiker, I'm a firm believer in the Hudson's Bay Start: your first day is a short distance, so if you've made the awful mistake of forgetting your tent, it's a short distance back.

Tip, if your traveling with children toss the electronics in the back, pull out the paper maps, & tools. Now, let the children work your route along the way & help guide the way. After all, we need to insure the skills of navigation without electronic assistance are kept alive as common sense abilities. Plus it adds something for the kids in holding the responsibility & needing to stay aware of their environment for telling you where your going. Trust, tell a child your willing to let them boss the route & tell an adult where they need & go. Their usually ALL in on that deal!

Being Intentional. That was an important one for our family. Several years ago that word was put on my heart and my wife and I spent the next year doing everything intentionally. This included two long-ish road trips up to Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon (6 months apart). We did it intentionally to have that time as a faimly. The next year, the word Perspective. Lot's of things happened to our family...good and not so. But we kept perspective. Several of our acquaintances had much situations happen, and that helped to keep our perspective on what was going on with us. And, we did that intentionally (wrapping in last year's word). The third year, the word was Purposeful. Similar to being intentional, this time we did it all with a purpose...to grow the family in depth. By this time, though, our family was really humming along and things were just coming naturally to us. This video (and I'm sure the series) will certainly help folks figure this stuff out. There's sooooo much info out there that it can be mind boggling. But if you just do one step. Take one bite. Just focus on one word. Start from there, then expand. Keep up the great work.

Great series, Kevin! I'm a newbie at overland camping so this series helps me to organize myself, my gear and my vehicle. So far I'm just testing the waters and camping in state parks and wilderness areas I'm familiar with, e.g. Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. At nearly 74 I have 62 years of backpacking experience with some car camping experiences (with family). I know what my body can do, just need to see what my rig is capable of doing.

Patreon supporter here and loving this series. I’ve already steered several new overlanders to the channel. We use Gaia, AllTrails, and Overland Bound while out on the trail, but nothing beats a nice big topo map (or 3) laid out on the kitchen table for planning. It’s nice to see scale, distance between points, and camping spots/land features you might not see panning and scrolling on a computer screen.

Nicely presented and informative. As someone who has been involved with wilderness and urban search and rescue for decades, I believe you hit all the high points. The only thing missing in my opinion is making sure someone knows where you are going and when you are expected to return. Also, set expectations with individual(s) as to when they are to call the authorities if your return is overdue. People all too often delay calling authorities soon enough. Take the indecision out of the situation by establishing a mutually agreed upon date/time when help is to be called. Great job. Love what you guys are doing. Keep up the old work.

Don't forget to check your lugnuts. We went camping this past weekend at a state park to get started. Were 100 miles from home and nearly lost a wheel. Almost spent the weekend camping out in the firestone parking lot insead of the park.

I really enjoy your videos. You have something for everyone, the experienced and beginner. I look forward to your upcoming videos, especially the vehicle mods. This summer I'll be going deep into Sweden and Norway again with my F150. It just has a 3 inch lift with 35 inch tires to get through the logging trails and severe back country, but that is sufficient so far. More important is the gear I take and communication. Out there there's no cell phone reception so no way to call for help should something happen. That's why we all have the old fashion CB radios. All the locals out back monitor the CB and will rush out to anyone in need. I guess that would fall into the "be prepared" video. LOL Anyway, thanks for all you do and know that many of us overseas watch you and your beautiful family adventure like we do. Take care but have fun.

Lol Before I did my build and left on my six month trip in 2019, I watched every single one of both of your videos. Got so many good ideas from the both of you. Not sure if you’ve been keeping up with me but when I got back from my trip in December of 2019 my church hired me as a full-time pastor. Also, when I got back I started putting some energy into a Christian Jeep Association. I now have 26 chapters across North America. My nonprofit, Mission For Hope continues to do outreach to help the homeless across the US. Appreciate everything you do Kevin to educate people to be responsible and overland safely. So happy you are doing this series and passing on your knowledge and experience. My wife and I are Jeep campers and have not had (made?) the chance to truly overland. We have traveled to several local state parks and usually "glamp" - that is we set up in an "improved" spot with water and electricity. However, recently we started to go off-grid (bring our water and a solar generator) within the state parks. This is a HUGE confidence builder that is preparing us for bigger adventures! Looking forward to the next video. :-)

I've just begun doing some day trips out in the PNW wilderness and one thing that I constantly catch myself doing is being impatient. Whether it be getting through obstacles or buying new gear, have patience and really think about what you are doing first.

I've watched almost all of your videos and it made me want to explore the US especially in the 4 corners area but this video made me get started. I have a Subaru Forester which can handle all the North Maine Woods roads (nothing difficult and I live in Maine)) and there are lots of places to camp. I already have lots of backpacking equipment so will try it out with the equipment I already have. I have been considering what would be my ultimate rig but will wait to see what the future brings before making any commitments. Thanks for the inspiration to get out and go.

Caroline is awesome. So glad she is becoming more interested in the channel. I am a firearms instructor and have taught hundreds of people gun safety and basic storage, maintainance and beginning accuracy skills. Gun storage in vehicles especially around untrained people or kids is serious. The balance of safety and being prepared is not one to take lightly. I am currently truck shopping , but my truck selection will be what works for me, not really biased toward overlanding..

My bear spray is an M1A Scout. Not trusting a spray with a human life, especially my family. Everything else mentioned here is super important. Never wonder off alone. Know the local wildlife and have an alternate means of communication like a Ham radio.

PAPER MAPS!!!! Learn to use a paper map, don’t rely on electronic gadgets!! The best maps you can acquire are the paper maps made for hunters. The best brand is Ram. They make maps of each wildlife management unit or area and are highly detailed in every way. Out here in the west we swear by them and every hunter and/or overlander worth their salt always carries one of their maps for the area they are in. These maps will show every single teeny tiny little detail, logging road, dirt track, natural spring, creek etc. I’ve used Gaia and onyx as well as a few others and they’re ok but they are never as good as the paper maps we use out here. I’ve even started to have small portions of these maps enlarged at the copy store to 11x14 then laminated because they have so much detail it’s easier to read them sometimes after enlarging them lol. That and I need reading glasses now so you know lol. Anyway find out who’s making those kinds of maps for your area and get one yourself.

Hey There - for those of you that either don’t like firearms for some reason or maybe you just aren’t familiar with them there’s an interesting alternative that should look into. I found this item at a Sportsman’s Warehouse recently while I was there for other reasons. First let me say that it is NOT a firearm and it is legal in all 50 states. It’s basically a modified version of a paintball gun lol. It looks just like one and it uses a small CO2 cartridge to propel a small “ball” out the business end lol. The biggest difference is instead of paint in the ball it has a type of pepper spray inside. Their might be other substances available but I forgot to ask about that, I would think bear spray would be a good one to have. Anyway, it’s being promoted as a non-lethal alternative to firearms. And you know what? I think that’s a great idea. I’m certain that there are plenty of people out there that don’t necessarily dislike firearms and dont want to take away other Americans rights to bear arms they just aren’t comfortable with themselves having and using a firearm. Maybe the thought that they might kill somebody even in self defence is to much for them, and that’s ok. Not everyone can handle things like that and that’s ok, as long as they don’t try to take away everyone else’s rights. Ok back to the “air pistol”. It looks like a large handgun and fires a small “ball” a little smaller than a standard paintball. I’m not sure why they didn’t just make them the same size other than maybe they thought some idiot would fill their paintball gun with pepper spray rounds for a laugh and of course we all know that it wouldn’t be funny lol. So if you want to defend yourself and loved ones from the animals that tend to associate humans with the presence of food but want to do it in a non-lethal way and be able to cross state lines with it in your vehicle go check it out, it just might be the perfect solution for that dilemma. Getting lost and staying calm is a great thing to learn from. Have water and gas and a gps and maps. Learn to find your way with the least amount of tech. And stay calm..

@@pnw_element9822 The best advice I can give you after a lifetime of wandering and getting myself temporarily un-found - #0 Tell somebody where you are going and when you'll be back. #1 Study where you are going beforehand, so you know what to look for and what to expect, what's out there and where you might go. #2 Pay attention, all the time, to where you are, how you got there, and what it looks like behind you. If you know how you got to where you are, you always know at least one way back. Seriously, turn around and check behind you often, especially when there's a fork in the trail. Things look different going the other direction. #3 When you don't know exactly where you are for a moment, don't panic, you knew where you were a few minutes ago, you just have to backtrack to there. #4 If you get well and truly lost, don't know where you are or how to get to anywhere you do know, stay put, make yourself visible, and make sure you did number zero back at the start of this list. You'll be fine. One of those satelite communicators comes in handy if you ever get this far down the list, but as long as people will be looking for you, and you're making yourself easy to find, you'll be all set. Time to make camp and settle in for the wait. #5 If you neglected #0, you better have done #1. Remember helpful things like: you can see more from a hilltop so go see if you can find your way from up there; water runs downhill, almost always, so if you follow the water, you'll come out somewhere recognizable on your map, because you for sure brought a map, right?; people are noisy - listen for people noises, and go where they are. Mostly, though, do #0, every time. Fact is, most of the people who really screw up and get permanently lost made a bunch of mistakes, not just one. We all make mistakes, so plan for that ahead of time and make sure you are backed up when it's your turn to make one. And then relax and enjoy :)

@@pnw_element9822 I got a SPOT locator device last year which was not too expensive at all, the InReach family are more expensive but do more. Any of them is cheap insurance. A long time back I used to sell mountaineering boots, which were not cheap at all. People would say "wow that's expensive" and I would say, "well, $500 seems like a lot, but if you're going to where you really need these, it's only 50 bucks for each toe you get to keep". That put it in perspective. A $500 winch comes in handy and saves a tow, but a $150 locator device and a cheap subscription fee could save your life. And in my case, it means my wife will let me go at all! Cheers, and enjoy the adventure - just do it smart and learn your way into it.

New to overlanding myself, and I'm looking forward to more in this series. Any chance you can do a video for us ham operators on how you integrate amateur radio in your nav/com processes. I'll be ordering an FTM-400 as well (just love the display and APRS features) but since you're not just in one area all the time I'm curious if you've discovered a way to always have repeaters/simplex frequencies at hand as you're moving without having to enter in repeater pairs and PLs on the fly. Do you find GMRS handy in overlanding as well?

hey, I do like what you are doing. great show, some fantastic shots. especially with the drone. First I am not a newbie long ways from it But I have a safety question about camping in the desert. I am more of in the mountains and don't really have to worry about it. do you guys ever run in to rattle snakes and scorpions while camping in Utah? My wife is worried about it, I am not. And understand this: when you finally get your rig modified to perfection and have gathered together all the various items you need/want for your journeys and have eliminated all the junk that was just taking up space - that’s when your rig will have too many miles on it to go any further without blowing up, your kids will have grown up and moved out to have their own lives, your wife will no longer be that cute little petite hottie that you married instead she will be that rather plump overweight snack monster sitting in the passenger seat of the very vehicle that has bounced her around so much that she has had a dozen concussions leading to early onset Alzheimer’s and gas is now so expensive you can barely afford to drive to the gas station, so you work from home and stream Netflix every night, falling asleep to reruns of NCIS (name of city) and the sound of chips being crunched somewhere in the darkness that your life has become.
