Shaping, glassing, and finishing a surfboard is NO JOKE! If you have never had the luxury of making your own surfboard... let me tell yah - it's a doozy INDEED. It feels 10x longer when I make one or two mistakes in any process. Just to correct ONE imperfection took so much more effort! OOF!

I'm going to be making a new one at some point in the future. I actually bought this second hand off a guy that used it to shape a couple of boards and decided it wasn't for him. I will make a video on that build if you'd like! 🍻

Nice work bro. Why don't you install the fins plug before the lamination?
@paulzeye_surfboards
@paulzeye_surfboards 26 күн бұрын
Thanks Victor 🙏🏽 I added it after the lam because I added a tint to my resin and I wanted the Finbox to show. This is a lighter tint so I could’ve added them before the lam. It’s an aesthetic choice 🎨

Looks great! How come you don't glass the fin boxes in earlier in the process?
@paulzeye_surfboards
@paulzeye_surfboards 3 ай бұрын
Thank you! I learned that the fin boxes should be installed after glassing if there is any color to the lamination. It looks a lot cleaner this way especially if the tint or pigment is heavy. You can't see the detail of the inbox (functionally it would be fine though). If the lamination has no tint or pigment I would cut in the boxes directly onto the foam and you can still see the details well through the lamination. Hope this helps 🍻

@@paulzeye_surfboards I did a board with tinted resin, did the finboxes first and didn't blank off the foam around the boxes..its just clear resin right? so shouldn't be an issue...after lam and tinted resin there were blotches of the remains of the resin from the fin boxes that I thought we had wiped away before lam...so yeah, clear lam, no issues, any tint, lam first and then add those extra glass patches around each finbox before hot coat...live and learn!

Definitely! Ive seen a couple of boards that did the Finbox before the lam on a lighter tint and it looked pretty good, but I think it needs to be a really light tint. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sick one! I have a question. When you use a marker/pen to write the dims and sign the board, what kind of marker do you use? Do you write on the foam before glassing, or on glass between the lamination and the hotcoat? When I use a sharpie on foam before glassing, the ink bleeds into the lamination every time. Thanks!
@paulzeye_surfboards

Hey, that's a great question. I've been experimenting with that. I just use a pencil with a dull tip on the foam. It seems to work okay for now. Still looking for something that works better. I have used an acrylic paint marker after the hot coat and sprayed a clear coat on after that (extra work if you decided to sand and polish the clear coat). I have a pencil from green light surf supply that seems to write a little darker, but I think any pencil with not too sharp of a tip can work. Test it on some scrap foam and see if it comes out the way you want. That makes sense with the sharpie. I feel like the resin messes with ink and makes it run a bit. That happens with the ink on my rice paper logo. So I have to work the resin in lightly. If you ever figure out a better way - let me know (and I'll do the same)!

@@I.Nicoll-SeaCritts thank you 🙏🏽 Do you use the paint markers on the foam, over the lamination, or on the hot coat?
@I.Nicoll-SeaCritts
@I.Nicoll-SeaCritts 3 ай бұрын
@paulzeye_surfboards I have done it both ways. I have only used epoxy resin but it shouldn't be a problem with poly. If using on resin and having another resin coat over the top of the pen don't put too much pen ink on it, as in several layers of the pen as it may cause fish eyes.
