Anything can be a server. You don't need to have a dedicated hardware for it. I use an old Android phone with a micro sdcard as Plex server, SMB Server, Transmission and aria2 server. The phone has a busted screen so I use scrcpy to interact with it. It's also rooted so the possibilities are endless.

ooh that's pretty cool, I am going to use this computer as a server, because I am buying a laptop (my lifestyle has changed). I have not decided how I am going to use it though....

What about power? Is it a model with removable battery, so you have the phone constantly connected to it's charger without (or with the battery, but who cares for a near dead phone)?

Also, I would be very interested to read/watch a how-to-setup for this particular approach

I'm just getting into this world but I have an unused android phone (probably like everyone else) and would be really interested in a tutorial for this (specially since I don't have to pay for an extra hardware)

Intel up squared boards are also a really neat option. They have sata, m.2, mini pci-e, and a lot of networking.

As a side note, you can have a progressbar with dd by adding : status=progress.
@Lierofox
@Lierofox Жыл бұрын
I hate using older versions of dd that don't have that option, though there's ways to do it by using pv between two dd commands. If you know the size of the source file (say it's 2GB) you can do: dd if=foo | pv -s 2G | dd of=bar

@@Lierofox but I think that new distros have a relatively new versions.

@@keikun2004 Yeah on modern distros it's not a problem, I'm talking about working on old installs, or for weird embedded systems like networking gear or something like a waves sound grid server, they can have base installs with some packages that are years old.

In addition to the comment from @Damien to add the progress bar on the `dd` command, you can run the `sync` command to be sure everything is flushed out to the card.

It doesn't seem to say on their website whether that IR is a receiver only or a transceiver. If it can transmit then it would make a pretty good remote consolidator.

You stated there is no way to view the progress when using dd to flash. But there is, 'dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/null status=progress' for example without the single quotes.

In stead of wasting money on ARM SBC's for homelab/desktop replacements just look into tiny/mini/micro computers of Lenovo/HP/Dell

Yup, this is what I've been leaning towards for a Plex server. Especially if you can score a used one for a good price. Not to mention you're preventing e-waste

I would think that this used as a server, you would set as 1st step to change the default "root" password! Before anything else... Why crreating a new sudo user and overlooking the major root security risk by not changing the root password?

. ?? 2gig not enough for a desktop? Myn uses 800mb while watching yt etc. 2gig is plenty. Its the speed thats limiting if its below 2k mhz. Even less so if ur runing headless.

Using vanilla distros from board vendors doesn't look like a good idea. They tend to have a lot of bloat which might hurt you badly, if you're relying on the services you're spinning out on your SBC to be rock stable. One such thing is unattended installs/upgrades. It can install updated packages somewhen when you expect it the least, like Microsoft does. Or this shitty "update notifier" you have in your top, ordered by used memory.

You make a number-related mistake about once every minute. 2021 is "two thousand and one", 2022 is not "twenty twenty", and eth0 is not "e.t.h. Oh !" (it's zero)
