Check out Charles Liu’s book: amzn.to/2VOM8v6
On this episode of StarTalk Radio, we celebrate World Space Week! The annual event has been celebrating the “contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition” since its ratification by the United Nations in 1999. This year is no different except for the fact that our own Neil deGrasse Tyson, comic co-host Matt Kirshen, and astrophysicist and StarTalk geek-in-chief Charles Liu, PhD, are joining the celebration by answering your fan-submitted Cosmic Queries on a variety of cosmic topics!
Explore the possibilities of higher dimensions in our universe. We investigate certain theories that allow for “compactified dimensions.” We also discuss Edwin Abbott’s iconic book, Flatland, and ponder how to explain a third dimension to someone in a two-dimensional universe. Next, we raise our sights to asteroids. What are the most common metals found on asteroids and how do mine them? Neil explains why, even if there is an abundance of curiosity, money is still always the driving factor.
You’ll hear about the state of solar energy. Find out the real costs inherent in the solar marketplace. Charles sheds light (pun intended) on the difficulties of switching from old technology to new technology. We harken back to the rapid switch from horses to cars and debate why the switch from fossil fuels to renewable resources has taken so much longer.
Discover more about speed of light travel: how you would protect those traveling in a vehicle at the speed of light, how The Flash is able to travel at the speed of light, and why it’s possible that you might not even be you at the speed of light. You’ll also hear about terraforming Mars and why the lack of atmosphere presents a big problem. Learn why it’s beneficial to put space telescopes on the far side of the Moon. Our trio weighs in on who will lead humanity’s journey through space? Governments, the private sector, or a combination of both? All that, plus, we discuss how to market space travel to those who find it unnecessary or extravagant.
This episode originally aired on October 4, 2019.

Same! The wonderful thing about it, too, is that even after you've watched them all, you can start back over again having almost entirely overwritten what you learned in the beginning with what you've learned at the end. I feel like you understand them all better, the more you watch. At first, I just watched out of sheer curiosity and love for all things Neil deGrasse Tyson. Now, I actually understand a great deal, so when I re-watch episodes I'm still learning something new.

Thank you for your service. What does your quote mean? I read somewhere else that it has to do with space exploration. If that is the case - space exploration *¹can* alter the course of civilization today and this would inevitably change the price of bread that same day. ⪢ ¹ Signals from earth (Voyager Golden Record) induce alien invasion. If we don't believe in Jesus then alien-conquest is possible.

I am in Europe and have been picking up on my rusty physics knowledge through Star Talk because it is so interessting and FUN☺️Even my kids are starting to ask more questions about the laws of nature on earth and beyond, and they are 4 and 6. As children and adults by evolution we learn the best when we play, I wish the education system would evolve and adapt more to those natural tendencies somehow🤔.Anyway a big thank you as always🙋‍♀️🌷

16:30 actually Neil I have to correct you there. They did have to have special advertising because cars were expensive and horses were already there and convenient. The roads were small so a car wasn't necessary and the care of horses was actually a lot more streamlined than it is now *because* people always used them. Not to mention that horse and buggies were actually mainly for public transportation and mounted police. Personally, people used bicycles which are still far more efficient than cars. Henry Ford had to go through a *lot* of work to make people buy his cars specifically and get them to believe that they were the future of transportation. I reference Ford and say his cars specifically because electric vehicles were already on the road for quite a few years before Ford came up with his petroleum-based vehicle. The only reason electric vehicles didn't actually pan out at that time is because they were more expensive to produce than the petrol vehicles since electricity was a newer form and source of energy. Nowadays, the only reason we aren't using electric vehicles despite the incredible access to this energy form is because people are stubborn and they're still expensive because of the same reason no one bought Ford's vehicles: The petrol-based vehicles and the method of production already exist and work for everyone. They're thinking to themselves; "this works, why should I change it?" The biggest problem in all of this is the consumer. Humans don't like change no matter how beneficial it will be to themselves or the environment.

Hi Dr Neil DeGasse Tyson I was Wondering, now that we are at the stage where we could possibly live in space. We also have expertise in how to alter dna to improve on physical attributes to life in space but also short term planet life or do we go the cybernetic way? A shift in species i suppose

Oh I'd give anything to be able to ask followup questions to these when it is going on. Unfortunately we can't

first time viewer, scientific less than nothing, love the cast! my question to the more scientifically inclined... so as a heathen i get we shoot a rocket into space, and there are phases as the rocket sheds off its bigger rockets to get it into space to smaller rockets and into even smaller ones. while i get that the smaller rocket shells burn off close to earth and the larger ones are caught in the earths gravitational pull brought in and burned up, but what about about things outside that pull, does it just float in orbit around us?

can someone awnser this for me Question: with the earth as it is now we have only been around 12000m deep and cant go deeper cuz of the heat but what if they find a way to go deeper is there a chance to find new minerals that could help ur in the far future and if not will there be more of rare minerals that are strong enough to make better cars, ship, planes etc.
