So here we are 6 years later, and I am about to do this to my 2000 Windstar with 255000 miles. I drive it every day to make money. Thanks for the help 2CarPros.

OK. Did it. Took little over 1 hour, stubborn bolt issue. The original starter (over 20 yr old), leaked at the end plate, so shorted the armature. Now, starts first time and fast. Prob have to put in a new battery soon, as it is over 5 yr old. Thanks again for the helpful video.

Let me ask you, have you ever had a power steering fluid leak either from the lines your somewhere else on your van? I have the same year as yours and cant find where its leaking from!

This is good information. Good video, also, but this still doesnt quite show me where exactly the starter is located. Is it located on driver side? Passenger side? It looks like it is towards the bottom of the engine and that seems common but I do t have access to a shop or I would just dig in and replace some things.

Couldn't get any more simpler than that but I did that very same thing and now my battery is being drained by the starter? I know I followed everything on the video and I didn't cross any wires, so what would you guys suggest me to do? I've been watching videos on computer and electrical system on my Ford Windstar and I'm afraid to attempt any of them cause I don't want to burn anything out. Please Help! They go from 30 seconds on removing battery cable to BAM we are under the car . No mention of jacking up the car, or the VERY iMPORTANT step of taking careof the cap on the starter wire which is hot at all times and very easy to leave off. NO mention of what wrenches to use, where the starter bolts are.....

Hello, I am having this strange problem in my Ford Windstar. The car will start up without any problem as long as it has been sitting for a while. But if it has been recently driven, it will not start, and there is no sound whatsoever when I put the key in the ignition and try to get it started. I was told I need a new starter, I was told I need a new alterrnator, I was told I need a new thermostast and/or switch, but I am so confused now. Which one is it, or is it all? The car was fine, and then I took it to be smogged, and ever since it has been overheating and has this starting problem. Does anyone have any suggestion or advice? Thank you. :)

do you mean the motor will not turn over or does it turn over fine and not start, slow turning over when turning your key on a hot engine usually points to a bad starter

Pop Sugar Country Girl hi did you ever get it figured out? My 97 Windstar is doing the exact same thing? Had new battery installed, Then the car still was doing the same thing? My engine light is on , Oreilys ran a code check and found nothing? They said both battery and alternator is good. I hope you get this message, I know this post and video are old , But I’m in desperate situation in need of advice.

2CarPros thanks, my car won't start, I replaced the battery and alternator but when I turn the key all I hear is a single click. Is it the starter? It's a 1996 windstar. I can't afford a mechanic so I'm trying to figure out what's wrong. Thanks for your help. -Nick

Sounds like the starter to me.

Yes but you don't even need to jack it up to get to it. It is right in the front. I changed mine in a parking lot, took about 10 minutes. It takes more energy to change a tire on this van than it did a started. You can do it!

I didn't have to jack mine to get to it, I'm 6' and around 200 pounds. Another person's requirements may differ.

No crank, no start after replacing starter. Tried jumping, nothing, fuel pump sounds like it's working. 2000 Ford Windstar SEL. Jiggled keys, moved shifter, nothing. Go to start no turnover just click like before I installed the starter. Any ideas? I'm broken...

UPDATE!!! My 2000 Ford Windstar SEL started finally! My buddy brought over a voltmeter, went over entire charging system, everything read good, I even bought a new battery jumper same results. Finally at wits end my buddy decided to try the highly dangerous screwdriver trick (DO NOT ATTEMPT! ⚠️). He was under the van, parking brake on, in park.? Told me to turn the key and it started. He came out from under and said he actually hadn't done it yet! So...after some head scratching we realized that the only thing he disturbed/did was MOVE THE POSITIVE CABLE!!! We replicated the problem. Got it to not start, click again, repeated, JIGGLED POSITIVE CABLE GOING TO THE STARTER, van started! Found you can reach the cable from above and no worries about getting caught up in moving parts. As I first verified the no start/click, jiggle cable, got back into driver's seat and started from the safety of inside the vehicle! Not a permanent fix but I'll try to post updates if it gets me to payday for repair/replacement as I've invested enough time and money this week folks! Thanks to this channel for reaching out with some directions to head in! 😉👍 Hope this helps others!
