This video goes over how to remove an intake manifold off of a 2012 BMW 135i N55 Engine. I also show how to replace the starter on this car from the engine bay. I would recommend replacing the Oil Filter Housing Gasket, Oil Cooler Gasket, as well as the Intake Manifold Gaskets during this job. Another job to complete at the same time would be an intake valve walnut blast. Thanks for watching!

@@ShopLifeTV At 28:07 there is a cable or little hose line traveling across the back of engine, to the right side it attaches to the body. You never mentioned it, or disconnected it. This hose disconnected from the left side, and I can't figure out where it goes over on the LEFT side? What is that hose, and where's it go?

Excellent video. Replaced the intake manifold gaskets on my girlfriend's 2014 535i and addressed two 102A01 and 108001 signal electrical fault codes. One tip I have learned for the removing the electrical connectors is using a small pair of vise grips to pinch the connector clip and then I can work it loose.

Hey man, just wanted to thank you for having this video up here. I spent way too long changing the starter, replacing gaskets, cleaning valves and so on today. Had it not been for your video, I probably wouldn't have made it half way through disassembly. Thank you for the very detailed video up here. I will say that I wound up using an E16 Torx on that rear starter bolt and that's how I was finally able to get it off. It was nearly stripped with the 14, and 12 was too small. You are a saint. Thank you for posting this video.

Great video and honestly felt like I couldn’t have done it without this. The attention to detail is great and I’m forever appreciative. I did a 2002 z4 a while ago and was so much easier than this. I would suggest a ratcheting e12 wrench. It was a life saver and so much easier to get the back bolt off the starter.

Thanks for a great video! I wanted to add for everyone complaining about all the wires. It's like this because of him having the more compact 1-series. I have a 3-series with the same engine it's a lot more spacious in the engines compartment. The intake manifold is a lot easier to remove with almost no wires going over it, the charge pipe is however a little bit more difficult to remove since it goes more toward the bottom of the vehicle on the F30 rather then towards the front like here.

Awesome video. My first time I worked on my car, I used ribbons around each cable I took off. If the job is really involved and has many removals, label the ribbons numbered 30 to one and attach 30 to the first thing you take off going down to lower numbers. When you are done installing, start from the lower number and go to 30. This way you're less likely to bend or crack anything and you wont miss any connections.

Update: Job done! 👏 changing this starter was an absolute see you next Tuesday of a job. Getting the rear bolt off was such a headache. Flex head ratchet didn’t work. Ended up having to use a small swivel ratchet and pry bar on the tunnel to get enough room. Such a shit design. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤌 The charge pipe on the M235i goes down and the space with the bolts on the throttle body is so awkward. We literally ended up essentially having to take everything off twice after forgetting to put sensors on that went under the inlet manifold 🤣 Most useful part of this video for us was how to get those connectors off. Although it was a headache I loved the process and feels satisfying driving around knowing we did it ourselves and saved over $1000. Next sports car I buy will probably be 90’s model JDM 😂

Yes, indeed, much more sensors and connectors to unplug than previous E39 or E46, but once you go over the fear of not remembering what is what and where they go (labels if needed is a good idea for beginners), then it becomes a less stressful work. The key is to have time and room and never panic, take tons of pictures if needed.

Thanks for the upload. Looks like you've done this process once or twice before. Haha. My 2016 M235i has not started a couple of times recently and othertimes its been slow to crank before starting. Battery is at 90%, Alternator is fine, so I suspect the stop/start fuction has started to wear out the starter. Shit scared to drive it anywhere and turn it off, incase it doesn't start again, so bought a new starter and will beusing this video as a guide tomorrow.

Hi. Thank you for all the insightful videos, I am new to the BMW world and i am learning a lot. I have an E46 318i 2004 model, Then engine runs smooth on start up but when it warms up in a minute or two it starts shacking. After tests, it seems like its only running on cylinder 2 and 3. i installed new Bosh spark plugs. The spark plugs before any further tests and swapping were running rich (Dark black) on cylinder 1 and 3. I tested the coil packs, swapped them around and they all seem to be working fine, the problem does not travel at all. It remains on cylinder 1 and 4 i tested the injectors and swapped them around and they all seem to be working fine. The only other thing that i can think of is testing the electrical plugs which connect onto the coil packs for 1 and 4 seeing that there is no sign of electrical power going through and causing spark. Can you please tell me what else i might need to look into. Thank you for your time.

If you have any questions about this, please reach out, happy to help anybody. '11 e90 335. He mentioned plugs and coils and breather tube, but there is a lot you can do while the intake manifold is off as CHEAP and quick preventative maintenance that I highly recommend. Prevent expensive and inconvenient failures. Fuel rail pressure sensor, access to alternator for voltage regulator/brushes, oil filter housing gasket, hpfp, check or replace your ground strap near the driver side tire and clean/tighten if needed, check for leaks throughout. The first 3 are less than $50 each and tend to fail around 100k. I recently had the voltage regulator start dying, the low voltage caused my FRM module to stop working (lights, windows etc). Shipped it out on ebay for someone to reset it. Pulled the alternator, did the voltage regulator and brushes. Did the oil filter housing gasket while I was there. You have to take the intake manifold off (at least a little bit) to access a oil filter housing bolt underneath it as well as to wiggle out the alternator. I find myself coming back to reference this video for other work. Very useful for these things.

Hello, good morning, your video is excellent, I would like to ask you a question with a comment that you put in the recommendations, for example. change the oil cooler gasket, change the oil filter base gasket and other work to complete at the same time would be a nut blast from the intake valve. The latter I do not understand what you mean? Another question, friend, to be able to put that motor on time, it is necessary to lower the starter because I do not see a hole to place the pin

Did you mention a little troubleshooting? One need to be very sure it is the starter before doing all that work. :)

I own a 2010 328i xdrive coupe.and just spent 900$ to replace a starter.they could have found an easier place for it.other then that no other problems have had the car for 4yrs now.you must keep up with maintenance before things go wrong.imo

Nothing you can do if things like a start goes bad other then just replace it as soon as you get have symptoms of it about to fail. Parts fail in all old cars there is nothing you can do about that. Just learn how to work on your own BMW you will save tons of money
