Great idea. Amazon has 12 bags that comes in two separate metal boxes that are actually selling for Less than six bags, seems somebody made a mistake so I'm going to grab it. Very handy if there is an emergency.

Thanks Luke, I really like the Idea of carrying magnesium shavings. It looks like a great time saver, and much easier than scraping your own. I have tried scraping in windy conditions and the fine particles scattered, the magnesium you have looks a lot bigger and more course than scraping a mag block. I ordered some from the same EBAY Seller. I will add this to all my fire kits. Thanks for all the great videos, I have learned a lot from watching, keep up the great work.

Ferro rods have a low amount of Magnesium, around 4% and don't burn as intensely or produce as much heat as Magnesium does. But of course as the saying goes, different strokes for different folks. ;) Be well.

I think it's the fact that I used so much of it for the sake of the video. Magnesium needs a lot of air for it to burn at it's maximum. If you use less or spread it out, it will (like you said) almost blind you.

Hey There Luke! I think your videos are just plain awesome. I really have camping withdrawals every time I watch your videos lol. They are very inspiring and entertaining. Thanks for doing all these gear reviews, they help us figure out what works best and what doesn't. Now that its winter I go in my backyard all the time and have campfires, my neighbors think I'm crazy but who cares right? lol, I'm just dying to get outside. I live in Idaho, so it can get pretty chilly at night but there is nothing like a warm fire on a cold night :)

ferro rods produce the same ammount of heat but in a really short time. The longer burn time for magnesium shavings helps to light your tinder in hard conditions. Actually the military magnesium block from Doan works in the same way: a big block of magnesium with a small ferro rod glued to it. But you have to use your knife to get some magnesium shavings first

It is dangerous to carry pre-shaved magnesium - at best, it loses potency, at worst, it can spontaneously ignite and is then nearly unquenchable
@MrTangent
@MrTangent 4 жыл бұрын
Magnesium is not spontaneously pyrophoric, despite what you’ve heard. It requires sufficient heat to ignite. Completely safe to carry, as long as you keep shaved pieces away from fire.
@Ripa-Moramee

@@MrTangent exactly, and even then the heat required you would have to be IN the fire.

I had stored a magnesium rod for some years, the day I needed I shave it but didn't catch fire, nothing! I heard after that experience that they go bad after some time.

I bought some of the magnesium shaving from the seller nancybtown that you recommended in your video. What I got wouldn't light even with a torch. It just melted. My flint had no affect on it. Might want to avoid that seller.
@Toastmaster_5000
@Toastmaster_5000 6 жыл бұрын
I recently just got some from the same seller, and I got the same problem. I could get some of them to light, but I think the problem is the thickness of the shavings - too much of the metal isn't exposed to air, and dissipates heat too quickly. It also just might not be as pure as the seller claims.
@cjwright79
@cjwright79 6 жыл бұрын
yeah there's no way it's pure, it probably contains zero percent magnesium. It's some shoddy Chinese knock-off and it's probably just soldering material.

I ordered 5 small bags from ebay and when i received them they wouldnt ignite with a match or a lighter....thankfully i didnt spend alot of money on them..now i am weary about buying magnesium in any form
@SavageVoyageur
@SavageVoyageur Жыл бұрын
The reason that a match or lighter won’t ignite the magnesium shavings is because they are not hot enough. A Bic lighter is about 1100 deg Fahrenheit. A match temperature is only 700 degrees Fahrenheit. This is too low of a temperature to ignite magnesium. A ferrocerium rod will throw sparks higher than 3000 deg fehrenheit, and this will light the magnesium on fire.

Nancy BTown is 5*****! I purchased a few bottles to play around with. Like a previous posting mine did not ignite with an open flame from a lighter. I concentrated the flame for some time without it igniting. I'm assuming I need more education on how to handle this shaved magnesium. Can you provide any insight?

Tried shavings (not sure of seller) and couldn't light with fire steel, a lighter , arc lighter or soto torch lighter. Had to get the butane torch out. At that point I really don't need the shavings. It burned bright but was was too fussy especially when there's vaseline and cotton balls...

I don't know whether its my camera or what but I don't think that magnesium is high quality or maybe it's because it's so finely shaved but it usually burns with a really bright white light that's almost blinding but oh we'll as long as it starts a fire who cares :)

Great job. Im too lazy to scrape the mag bar so thats awesome. Today I used a magnifying glass on charcloth to get an ember from the sun which is pretty easy but I burn my thumb. It sucked haha.

Great Video, and I appreciate your time filming it. I have a question, and as well. Does the Amt. of magnesium Dictate how Long it Burns? (In other words, could I use a Smaller Amt. but balled up tighter, and get the SAME Burn time, as say a 'bunch' twice its size?) I'm asking, because I believe that Knowing this, would let me know how much to consider buying. (Thanks bud!)

It was a ferrocerium rod (ferro rod aka firesteel aka mischmetal) using a carbon steel striker/scraper. Then the spark ignited the magnesium.

This may be a silly question but if you are prepared enough that you have magnesium shavings, and the flint thing then why would you not have just packed a lighter instead?
@Pigman1969
@Pigman1969 8 жыл бұрын
A lighter is definitely handy, but they can fail. Think of this as a backup solution. I like to have a redundant solution for fire and water in survival situations.

Luke, Just watched your video on the powder capsules magnesium fire starter. Since you have used both, do you like the shavings over the powder? Which burns longer given a similar amount? Thanks Keep up the great videos.
@cjwright79
@cjwright79 6 жыл бұрын
the problem with that big bag is that in a real survival setting, it's inconvenient to carry it around, compared to a six-inch stick you just put in your pocket or small backpack pocket. And my god man, can you imagine if a spark got into that bag? It'd be a freaking meltdown! You'd have to run for the hills or the resulting inferno would give you a sunburn.

Hey luke.....how are you doing.........there are different qualities of magnesium. ....the Doan bar is the best...which is military. ..but stay away from the bars made in china...absolutely worthless. ..won't even light with a flame.....but seeing how already shaved magnesium is dangerous in that form......best if scraped from the bar...and if you wrap a long piece of duct tape around the bar...1 inch wide...you can shave some magnesium on the sticky side of the tape..just a 2" piece... and the glue from the tape will ignite and give you a longer time to start a fire....even after the magnesium goes out. ..take care luke......your awsome..
