For anyone trying to figure out how to use gouache, this is how to do it! There's a reason color theory classes so often use gouache, because you have to mix distinct steps of color rather than just smudging gradients. This was so much fun to watch!

What you mentioned at around 7:00 really resonates with me ! I feel like as artists we just like to hoard supplies and put them on pedestals with caution tape around it lmao ! This year I'm definetely gonna try to pull the expensive stuff out and use it !Loved this video and the painting

The pink underpainting really makes it pop! I just finished my sketchbook after only drawing in black brushpens and ink for a personal challenge and I'm moving to another one with no "rules" feels so weird rn but i'm trying to experiment and stuff in it

you could try giving yourself prompts. like a three marker challenge or limited color palette. or there is also colored ink.,

I love being able to see the previous layers reacting a little while youre painting - that aspect of gouache scares me so it’s fun seeing you just flow with it! What a lovely painting. The blues are just stunning ❤

What a fantastic first page! I love the way you placed lots of different shades of gouache next to each other rather than blending it smoothly… if that makes sense? ❤

Beautiful painting ! My goal for last year was to use all the art supplies when I wanted, expensive or not, just for a doodle using luminance pencils etc. It brought me a more relaxed way of sketching and making more random pieces. In October I started an a2 size art piece with polychromos pencils and 4 luminance ones, which I never would have done before. Like using so much expensive pencils on an insane piece of papier 😂 I hope you have an amazing art year (for everyone here) and don’t save the good stuff for a good time that in the end will end up with art supplies unused

so worried about starting my first page. hearing your thoughts and struggles is comforting :) I wanted to use primarily watercolor in my new sketchbook, but also picked up a brand new tube of white gouache and I've never actually used gouache, so it's nice to watch your process. thanks for sharing your process!

Bruh this is so good! I feel the same with artist grade gouache vs the Himi gouache, like it's easier to tile stuff like Holbein or W&N cuz it's opaque for most of their colors. It's extremely hard to get an opaque laydown with Himi because the paint (even the white) is more transparent, so endless layering occurs rather than laying down a color from Holbein and moving on

That is FABULOUS!! You really captured her feels in that painting! I love the palet too...just beautiful. You are so right too about saving things. I have dishes that I don't use because I'm saving them for some special occasion that may never happen - SO I'M USING THEM!!! I learned quite a bit from this video that I can apply to my new found love of painting. I've been doing it since this past January and I'm LOVING it. Still discovering all the different mediums too and that is so much fun. I'm just starting to use guache too. Thank you so much for your video!!

I absolutely love The Cars and I saw this video suggested and thought... wait! Is that...? It is! Really lovely work - doing believable transparent things can be a challenge - I've never tried that in gouache, but I can see how it would be even harder because you can't really blur stuff easily. I dunno! I'll try! New subscriber :)

I always fall into the trap of being too precious with my more expensive art supplies and I always think "no this is just a fun piece, it's not going on someone's wall" but I do art for fun and I think I need to let myself use my cool, good quality stuff even if the painting is for me. It makes me happy and I'm excited to use them and I enjoy the stuff I make with them a lot and it doesn't help my art supplies either if they're sitting in my closet for months and months untouched. I consciously tell myself to use the good quality art supplies when I'm making art just for myself, sometimes, and i find it more enjoyable that way. I don't think you need the most expensive supplies for everything, but I have them and it's okay to use them just for art that's for me.

maybe something fun you could try is redraw a childhood drawing of when you were like... below the age of ten or something. Imo it's different than a standard redraw as most kids draw the funkiest stuff around that age which will make you wonder if the thing they drew is an apple or a cat :'-) I think it might also help with exploring your creativity, see what you make out of it now

I feel the hardcover being weird to work in, I use the softcover but got hardcovers two different times for christmas and its just so weird having the extra size, also I would for you to talk about the differences you see when reactivating the artists gouache vs straight outta the tube and what you prefer

Can I ask you a question about your process on this? What is the purpose of starting with the pink underwash, when almost none of the pink remains visible in the final painting? Why include that step at all?

2020 helped me get over my fear of using my "good" supplies until I'm "good" enough to use them. I had the realization I might die, dark, but true. Faced with mortality I imagined someone cleaning out my apartment and throwing things I value in a trash bag. Now I stick my stickers and use my nice paints. The idea of them being thrown away without having been used sobered me up to actually using them. Would the person who cleaned up my stuff even know or care what daniel smith watercolors are to donate them? Idk.
