Hey so just a pro tip from a former art teacher…for using oil pastels-if you use baby oil on a q-tip or something like that they blend better and you don’t get as messy and you don’t have to touch the paper…and use a tooth pick to help scrap some cool effects…for all the cool artists out there!❤

@@aimsanimations2905 you will get different effects based on the different blending techniques. So short answer is yes, you can just use a qtip. Have fun and experiment with different techniques 👍

@@aimsanimations2905 the baby oil helps smooth and blend. I would try both and see which you like better. With out the baby oil it will work a bit like using your finger and if your pastels are a bit more dry it would be slightly more difficult to push the colors around; you might feel like you have more control. With the baby oil you can push the colors further and it will be more smooth

I personally love oil pastels so so much because they mimic oil painting results without the need to prep and have good ventilation [ a god send for someone who uses their bedroom as a makeshift studio]. I actually don't do the rubbing thing because it irks me, instead I build up a pretty thick coat of the pastels and afterwards I just kinda mush it around, imitating the feeling of painting, if that makes sense? It gives this very scrumptious texture jkfjkdf

It's nice to see artists speaking about the discomfort of sensitivity issues with certain textures and products. I related so hard to the comment about rubbing paper, the cakiness of oil pastels sticking to your fingers, and not liking how it feels to touch certain things. Acknowledging that out loud is so beneficial to your watchers who may struggle with the the same thing but are embarrassed to admit it to others. Its hard for some people to understand what that sensation feels like and it can be a massive hindrance to wanting to try new mediums

the sound and feeling of charcoal bugs me badddd. i went to art school for a bit and i almost died in drawing having to hear the sound of charcoal over and over. i wore gloves in painting too. as an artist, i never realized until i was older how many sensory issues i had with mediums and how i avoid certain art forms because of that!

i'd just like to say that i had the same opinion on oil pastels until I got ahold of some really good brands and paper. the cheaper brands feel like glorified crayons but the nicer brands are so creamy and blend really nicely, couple that with pastel paper and oooof it's so satisfying. Schmincke and Rembrandt are really good, a bit on the pricier side but so worth it imo, and as for paper i'd recommend hahnemuhle velour paper, works so well with blending and quality

I would suggest you try other oil pastel, at least professional munguo line, or even Sennelier. They are very different in experience. I used student line munguo and it is awesome. It allows blending with other colors, 3-4 layers. You can get fine detail by strategic scratching (you can scratch 2-3 layers and see the 1st one) or by adding colored pencils. I could achieve very painterly look, like it is oil paint, without oil paint mess and price. I would probably buy another set and try plain air with oil pastel.

If you want a great midway supply that’s both a crayon and an oil pastel then the Caran Dache Neocolour crayons are the best. PLUS! They’re water soluble so you won’t get patchy blends by adding water and it would be easier to incorporate with your existing supplies.

I think the frustration with using any medium comes from lack of knowledge more than anything. You have a vision in your head that just won't come out like you planned. Obviously you have grown as an artist since you were a kid, and with that knowledge about art and your ability to now control the medium, your results are much better. Enjoyed the video!

I have the same problem but with soft/chalk pastels and charcoal- I have since warmed up to Charcoal and sometimes prefer it over graphite. They're so messy, and the dry texture is a sensory nightmare. I actually love oil pastels but they're still very messy for my current practice so I haven't used them in a while. I never want to touch chalk pastels unless I'm using them to add more depth and color to a more tactile and three dimensional craft. The others I wouldn't mind picking the others up again!!

You can use a 50/50 turpentine linseed oil mix and a brush for blending oil pastels, it makes them really work like a paint. You can also you baby oil. I think oil pastels are better for artists that aren't as detail oriented. They're great at covering a large area at once but you can't get them to a fine point.

I don't know if you've tried them before or not, but I'd be really curious as to your thoughts on Caran d'Ache Neocolors (and specifically Neocolor ii's?), they're wax pastels, I'm not usually a pastel person either, I'm not a fan of how messy they tend to be for one thing, but with the neocolors they act basically like a really buttery, highly pigmented crayon, they blend nicely together, and the perk of the neocolor ii's in particular is that they're also water soluble, so you can use them like a watercolor, basically :D They're really fun, in my opinion, and much more pigmented than crayola crayons lol :) Additionally, they tend to be minimally messy, in my opinion, and with the neocolor iis you can largely blend them through layering and/or you can also use a damp brush and blend them that way rather than using your hands or other materials. I'm an artist who's pretty picky about supplies getting on my skin, too, so I get where you're coming from with certain supplies not being appealing in that regard :)

I had an advanced art class in 7th grade. And the art teacher brought out wax crayons. I thought you have to be kidding. But he put up a picture he did with them. He used a soft technique with them and it was a beautiful picture. He had the rest of us pick a photo to copy. I chose the same one he did. It was an albatross. I use a less soft method. It looked like an oil painting when done. The next time I saw it. It was hanging on the hallway wall next to some other select pictures. You will be surprised what you can achieve with crayons. Though some are better than others. I don’t like oil pastels too.

I really dislike that brand of oil pastels. I use the Mungyo Gallery Soft Oil Pastels, as my cheapest option. But they are REALLY GOOD. And I also have the Paul Rubens which I don't like as much as the Mungyos, and then the Neopastels, which I buy open stock, and the white from Sennelier for really bright highlights at the very end. But I don't like the Sennelier in general cause they are SO soft you fill the tooth of the paper too quickly and there's no way to layer a lot, which I love to do. Ps. I think that u should try the Mungyos cause judging oil pastels based on that particular brand you are using is not giving you the real deal. Plus with the Mungyo you can blend with the pastels. I barely use my fingers!

I'll often use some of the crumbs to blend with oil pastels. Also, putting a tissue or napkin over the finger you're blending with can also help. Neither of these are "pro-tips" but I've dedicated this year to teaching myself how to use oil pastels, after hating those stinky,crappy pentel ones in Primary school

I'm more so into construction (Form) more so than how saturated and glossy a piece looks! Unless it's a final work! More perspective, anatomy,body facial expressions! Doesn't always matter which medium it is! Beautiful work though.💯👍

Oil pastels are awesome if you pay good money for them. Why brand you have isn’t the best.

If you like blackbean's art (dope) you should take a look at misako flodin's channel. That lady is doing witchcraft with these things. I like both of them, and everytime I watch their videos I feel like trying oil pastels again. Everytime I do I hate it though. Lol. I'm okay with the chalky ones although I don't really use them anymore.

alot of supplies i hated as a student i really like now. its not the schools fault but they never really taught you how to use them. i love graphite now where i used to hate them. i think if you hate something do some research and try again

Why is being left handed a problem?

@@loati94 for me, I get the stuff all over my hand because I end up dragging my hand against the ink rather than some people being right handed not having to go over that same spot again
@loati94
@loati94 2 жыл бұрын
@@ripley528 Yes I know that writing as left handed sucks because you end up smudging ink or pencil, I was refering to the comment about the oil pastels. If you start the paintings or drawings from the right its exactly the same as being right handed and starting form the left.
