I like how you touch on the difference between scheduling and planning. What really sets a planner apart is when it is used to think through and use your time intentionally. Just keeping track of your schedule is great, but thinking through everything else is the next level.
@AllTheArtsy Жыл бұрын
Same with the difference between tracking expenses and budgeting. It's good to track and know how you spend, but if you really want to take control of your finances, then you have to budget and set intentions for your money *before* they are spent. It's a really great distinction to make.

This is the best beginner planner video I’ve seen, and anyone starting out should just watch this, and make a start. I’ve been bullet journaling for over 5 years now and have made all the mistakes, started, stopped, started again… and it’s only been the last year or so that I’ve started to concentrate on adding reflection moments into my journals for recall. Being able to go back to specific times to track a health moment or a meeting note or memories of an event is so extremely beneficial. Reflection pages for each month feed on to reflection pages for the year are good place-holders to easily find what you’re looking for. You also become better at the kind of information you leave for your future self. And it becomes so much easier to review your year, to reflect on how you can do your next year. But to get to this stage, you just need to start: monthly, weekly, daily… and reflect your week or month in bullet points and move on. Pre-printed planners never work for me, there’s never enough space to just turn to the next blank page spread and have a brain dump for an idea or an interest… and then the next day on the next blank page write the days day and date and resume your daily’s… But they do for other people, so experiment, and just start😊

When I was in high school, they started handing out basic planners when we were in sophomore year to get us used to planning out our schedules. I color coded my classes and always knew my homework based on the color. I will never forget my Psych teacher using mine as an example of how to use it (apparently I was one of 25 in the entire school who actually used theirs). I never forgot the pride and how easy it made my life and never looked back. Now I have a planner for everything and couldn’t be happier. A5 for work, Weeks for personal, TN for financial, and A5 Day Free for media (books, movies, shows, and video games).

I started planning two years ago. I started out with a horizontal planner with only checklists and I thought that I wasn't "doing planning right", so I bought myself a big vertical layout Happy Planner and a whole bunch of stickers and started using it last September- and now I'm overwhelmed... and I've still for the "I'm not doing planning right" feeling. I refer to my phone's calendar app more than I do the planner that is always sitting open on my desk right next to me. What you have shown here is closer to what I want to do: it's very simple and looks quite manageable. Thanks very much for this video 🙂

This is an interesting video. Very thought out and definitely covers a lot of information. But I disagree with the recommendation of a blank notebook for a beginner planner. Although it is cheaper and very versatile for many people that need a planner it requires time they don’t have - they need to get into their planner and no matter how simple drawing your own spreads takes time. And many people, especially newbies, are very overwhelmed by the blank page. They fear messing up their planner and it not being “perfect” and they don’t know what they want or need. Figuring out what they want to add, the order, the layout etc is a lot for someone that’s new. And I also don’t recommend sticker boxes for newbies because they are costly and overwhelming. You don’t know where to use the stickers, where you’ll want them, how much functional space they need etc. I believe that the easiest thing to start with is 1) a store bought inexpensive planner - target, office supply stores, Walmart etc all sell them and a pen. It’s cheap and simple and ready for you. Or 2) printables that you stick in rings or a TN. There’s tons of free ones and inexpensive ones too and you can easily text out different layouts and sizes and see what you like. You can even print them and not put them in any cover and just carry them in pencil bag or glue them in a cheap spiral notebook until you find your way.

I want to second how key it was to see the same month and the same items in two different displays!! I had the opposite reaction, but that's the thing, we both figured out what we prefer! I would love to see a video that includes something similar for the vertical/horizontal weekly layouts. Also the two horizontal layouts (horizontal all in one page or horizontal as a full spread on both pages). I personally like the vertical month in my digital "perpetual calendar" (reference calendar for people's birthdays, events, things to do in certain months, etc.). However, for the actual current month/year, I need to see it in calendar form for my brain to process it properly.

I sometimes get over perfectionistic with the way I am doing things and then it’s like my brain just shuts down and doesn’t want to think about it anymore. I just can’t handle the stress and sheer mental effort. For example I was today looking at my monthly reflections from back in 2020 and I wrote some pretty useful stuff about habits I need to establish to be more productive, things that worked for me that I have since abandoned, and a bunch of other useful stuff, but I just experienced this wave of information overload. I just don’t know how to keep things simple but progress at the same time.

Funny you should mentioned that June-ish reassessment of your planner system… 6 months into the year and I have discovered I overcomplicated things. I'm staying in my Sterling Ink for weekly/monthly schedule, common planner, journaling, but going back to my Weeks for work. It was a really good idea to try the Franklin-Covey one page a day for work, but discovered that I need a lot of note space and for strategizing and planning and it doesn't have that. Weeks is a little better, but again not sure if it's the right move. But I have another six months to figure out alternatives! Enjoy your camping trip!

Thank you Rachelle. I am getting ready to start one of these and learning so much from your videos. I did subscribe of course. Just ordered my journal and some stencils tonight. In my head, I am already calling it my TaDa Journal (instead of To Do), as I am going to watch how much I get done. Then I get to go TaDa at the end of each week. LOL Here's some thoughts running through my head at the moment, in case they help someone. I was thinking that the "What worked" and "What didn't work" each week would be really useful. But I thought I'd call mine. "What to celebrate" and "What Can I learn from" Then list all the things I learned that week from what didn't work as planned to remember and look back on later. For me personally, I am the world's biggest procrastinator, which I am going to work to improve on through this journal, My thoughts of what might help me most with that is when I list monthly goals.... to put a letter next to each, R=I feel completely ready to do it. H= I am feeling hesitant. Then write all the Rs into the week to be done. And stop and break the H's into as many smaller steps as feels comfortable and then find some fun way to do them and/or a reward as each is completed Love the idea of adding in inspirational quotes too! Thanks again for all your help.

I suggest an even easier approach: RING PLANNER. With a ring binding you can change things freely and is super flexible! Ex: forgot the yearly? Just open and add it in. The monthly spread is not useful? Open the rings and remove it. You like the notes page but need them in another position? Just open and move the pages. Plus you can print pages more seamlessly, and have any format and a clean layout all the time.

Well the good news is, you can set up whatever spreads you want in a blank notebook. So, what pages are you missing from your preprinted planner? Just add those in! There's also no rule that says you can ONLY have monthly or yearly views for the time period that that blank notebook "covers." If you need to plan ahead to July of next year but you know you typically only get 6 months out of a blank notebook, who cares? Dedicate a few pages to it anyways! I’ve had a planner since 2000, mostly generic pre printed ones from bookstores. I’ve found I need 1) a big monthly view 2) vertical week layout 3) lots of space. I’ve used the big Planner Pad for the past 4 years and love it, although it took me 3 years to figure out how to customize and use it to keep me coming back to it. I am chronically ill so I have a challenging relationship with “to dos” and schedules as I can’t trust my health from day to day. So I use my planner for 1) journaling about the day and tracking what I did and how I feel 2) scrapbooking 3) managing to-dos and appointments. Once I started doing active scrapbooking/art in my journal it all clicked…now I can’t wait to use my planner.

What does this video have to do with ‘normal’ i find that word very triggering. This video has absolutely nothing to do with people so why are you naming it ‘for normal people’ what is a Normal person?

I took it as people who don’t need/want all the ‘extras’ typically that are the norm within the planner community, or for people who are overwhelmed with making things so aesthetic that they end up not using their journal for what it’s meant for - to keep you organized and to get things done. Obvi, I can’t speak for her but that’s my interpretation!

Elena has my intention spot on as well! A lot of planning/planner content is inaccessible to people who are just looking for super simple solutions. Becky, I also appreciate your comment voicing how the words we use might have effects beyond our intentions!

@@RachelleinTheory I didn’t think of it that way at all it does make sense now though. I really enjoyed the video. Sometimes we need to strip back to the basics
