Edible container gardening can be very rewarding, especially if you are someone who wants to garden with limited space. Container gardening is also a great way for beginner gardeners to begin their learning process on a smaller, more manageble scale. If you follow some basic guidelines for container gardening and take good care of your plants you are already off to a good start. I hope this video helps you get something growing! There is still plenty of time in the season to start a garden. 😀 There is some extra info and links down below!

Don't forget to "harden off" your started plants! “Hardening off” refers to the period of time you will take to slowly adjust your plants to the area they will be planted in. This will help them to slowly adjust to the wind and sunlight your area receives. On the first day you will bring your plants outside in this spot for 30 minutes to an hour. The next day you will bring them out for a bit longer like 2 hours. The next day 3 hours and so on. This process should go on for about a week to make sure you plants are truly adjusted to their new home. It is important to keep them well watered during this period.
Lastly, I forgot to mention that the smaller your container the quicker it will dry out. Just thought I'd mention that. I always feel like I am forgetting points I wanted to make in my videos so if you have any questions please feel free to ask!

Oh wow I didn’t know you are such an experienced gardener!! Very cool. I really hope container growing goes well for you! It really is nice to have everything right there in a small space. It’s quite manageable this way and there are so many great containers/container plant varieties to choose from. Thank you and much love!

Maddy, again a great informative video as usual. Unfortunately we are not allowed to plant any small garden this year out front, so I bring my plants in and out on my window sills, which is working out fine I have about 12 nice plants that are producing babies which I separate them into another pot and donate them to my gardening friends in my area. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience so we all grow better plants properly. ❤

Oh, your videos are such a delight! So professional, so well done. When you were moving your hand over those herbs, rosemary, sage and thyme, I could almost smell them. They are among my favorite to cook with. The tiny tomatoes looks amazing too, and you simply cannot over use "beautiful", it's perfect for your creations! This is great advise and encouragement for anyone, (even an old timer like me, haha) Thanks so much.

Thank you!! Ahhh I love doing that with herbs. Just smelling them makes me happy 😊 if you haven’t tried lemon thyme yet I highly recommend it! And thanks haha. As I was editing I realized I said beautiful at least 10 times 😅 but you’re right! How else would I describe my favorite plants/things?

Thank you! I was thinking of doing something like that with some recycled bottles but have been wanting to try the terra-cotta ones out too. It seems like this will be the time to try them since I am still having problems with moisture retention in the grow bags. Thank you for the great suggestion!

@@SmallSeeds okay just got done watching. Lots of good tips here: shop in the winter for deals, use most whatever for containers -doesn't have to be expensive, vertical planting and more. I totally agree with you about grow bags and clay pots. They dry out way too fast for me. Glazed pots and plastic pots are a better choice in my situation. Now I am motivated to add a 1000 more container pots to my collection!
@SmallSeeds
@SmallSeeds 2 жыл бұрын
@@VirginiaFruitGrower Thanks! Yeah I’m hopping I can still use the grow bags and clay pots we have in different areas where they won’t dry out too quickly. I killed a bunch of plants in those grow bags last year 😔 but I think it’s working out better this year already. Thanks for watching as always. I hope it was informative. Hope all is well with you, G!

Excellent video. I’m in a new build property on a brown field site (former cotton mill). Tried growing in pots the first year and everything literally got savaged by slugs. We have had to pave over most of the garden and put in false grass. Just bought a large kitchen planter (wooden) so I’m hoping to get some herbs and salad leaves in next weekend. I’ve also just bought some of those black fabric planters. 🤦‍♂️
@SmallSeeds
@SmallSeeds 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I hope it goes well for you. Those wooden planters seem really nice btw! I've been thinking of trying one out myself. We have trouble with slugs sometimes too. Have you ever tried crushing eggshells around the base of your plants? It's helped with deterring slugs from eating our smaller seedlings after planting. Im finding with the black grow bags having them in the shadier area is helping. They just dry out quickly so that's the main thing to stay on top of with them.

@@SmallSeeds thanks for the tips! Apologies btw. I didn’t realise you were American, the accent is quite subtle and only realised when you were talking about 50 cents seeds. Brown field over here is the site of an old building torn down and new housing built on top. The soil is usually awful, if indeed it is soil. More often it’s just rubble with a lawn on top. Being able to grow plants and identifying them in the wild should be taught in schools, (at a practical level).
@SmallSeeds
@SmallSeeds 2 жыл бұрын
It’s funny because I never consider the fact that I may have an accent 😆 thanks for elaborating. I agree that a lot of this information should be taught in school. I’m so happy I get to teach my daughter. Even if she chooses not to use this information in the future I’m happy she has it. Hope you enjoy the summer and have a successful gardening season!
