“It’s the things we don’t really talk about that make us feel so alienated.” I have really felt like this recently. Thanks for saying it out loud! Not being able to talk about certain things has become THE thing we don’t talk about. Deep down, it feels like fear. You give me courage with your openness. Thanks!

I think we all feel this. It has become so difficult to interact without fear of offending someone OR in the online world having people attack you or harass you for having differing opinions or views. It's sad that we cannot come together and share and respectfully agree to disagree when needed. I can still love someone if I don't agree or like a view they have. DIFFERING VIEWS DOESNT EQUAL HATE!! love to you Jess for rocking content as usual! ❤

I’m in a motel currently; house fire Monday Jan 8, damaged my living room and laundry room and water heater. I smelled the old wiring burning and we got out safely; fire dept stopped the fire at its origin, preventing EXTENSIVE damage. Will be another week or so in this motel before we can safely go home…. And I’m so homesick. Prayers from those believers, if you’re inclined. Thank you

Oh no! I hope that you are back in your home really soon, and that all traces of damage are dealt with. How scary for you. Thank all that is good that you were there to see what was happening. Had you been away from the house, and it be undetected when it started things would have been significantly worse. Prayers that all damage to the house and your feelings of security at home are soon repaired xx

1) Tucker, my 18 lb Havanese, loves peeping the sheep. He watched that whole part intently. 2) I’ve built 2 houses. The first was a nightmare and the 2nd a dream. The difference was the contractor. Knowing that Jeremiah will be doing a lot of the work will make so many things much easier. It’s going to be so great and I can’t wait to see your progress. I do know that it is an anxiety provoking process. It will all work out! 💜

I have built my own house, being the general contractor and much of the labor. At that time, I was married and there were two of us. Now I'm a single mom....and I'm getting ready to do it again all on my own. I have ZERO doubts that you can do this. Yes, it's overwhelming to think of it all. So don't do that. Make 2 lists: 1 with the BIG steps that need to happen, in order (Septic, foundation, walls, roof, etc), and a second that breaks down those 'big' things into their smaller parts. Even go to a third level if you need to. Then when you look at your lists, they shouldn't be so overwhelming. Only look at the 2nd (or 3rd) layer list of what you need to get done and don't pull out the next list until you're far enough along on the one you're working on to start on the next. That said, it does also help to keep at least a mental list of appliances & fixtures you need so that when you go to the hardware store, you can always check their clearance/reduced areas for them. You can save a bundle that way.

We love Builder Bridgade here on KZbin! He has a massive checklist of all the things to consider when building - put together by builders, contractors, and the big community of people who have joined their FB page while building. Some things are definitely upgrades, but its chalk full of practical advice on making your new build FUNCTIONAL. 🎉 There is a lot of content about important things to do if you want to set yourself up for being able to do upgrades later on as budget allows - many electrical, plumbing, and framing decisions that are wayyyy cheaper at build than later on.

Jess you can truly do this house. Miah really is up for this. I am 76 years but as a just 18 year old married high school drop out i drew the plans for our first home. We rarely hired anyone do do anything, as back then you did things yourself. I made mistakes, such as I didn't allow for the 2x4s in the walls and my father in law was up set because he had to adjust the walls and my brother in law was upset because I instead they take down the walls because they were a bit off square. However my family and my husbands family built our home. We did hire someone to dig out the basement and someone to dig the well and septic field due to not having access to the equipment. We were young !8 and 20.You are much older and more experienced than we were so you will do a fantastic job with your home, so don't stress it. We built a 4 bedroom home with a full basement in 1965. I believe it was still standing last time I drove by. Our property was sold when we divorced in 1988. I raised 6 children there. I really miss the 4 acres we had. The property is where my grand parents, parents and later my family lived. I really miss the country. I had a 1 acre garden and put up 1200 jars a year. I now garden on a city lot in Joliet just south of Chicago.

Anything you don't know how to do you can find a step by step process on the university of KZbin 😅 we are selling our house this spring and building again because we only had 4 kids when we designed this house and now we will have 7 kids😂 just expect Everything will take twice as long as you expect!

Jess, I’ve been in my waiting room, we built a 30x40 metal building with a covered porch. We sprayed closed cell spray foam through a contractor 2” . During this Artic Air,1* lows with only a small DR Heater set on 66* our building, still under construction has stayed warm and comfortable. Of course I have live plants in there waiting!!! They are thriving ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Closed cell spray foam is the way to go!!!!

We built the same 30x40 metal building “house” in late 2019/early 2020 that was supposed to be the future shop. We have 3 mini splits that heat the different zones and although they’re working hard, the closed cell foam has been so helpful! We will build our forever home someday & it will attach to this building. Hang in there! Our waiting room can be a blessing…

Loved this short video! Not very often I actually get a tip on seed starting of instead of moving the lights, put something under the trays! DAH! I never thought of doing that! I seriously hate moving the lights up and down and it is one of the things I dread doing....I am for sure going to get some boards to use instead, that is going to make things so much easier. I never thought of that. Plus my plastic racks that I have my trays on are not level and tend to dip in the center of them, so a board under the trays should help that. Thanks for that! I am so excited to see your house build! I am very happy for you!!

But that's when a good project planning notebook comes in handy to comparmentalize all of that and keep it organized. It's like any project. You make a plan and work it step by step.

We are currently building our house completely by ourselves (well mostly my husband). We bought raw land about 1.5 years ago. When we first decided to go on this journey and told people about it people got weird. The amount of snarky comments and nay sayers, including friends and family, was unbelievable. I just quit telling people. But we have been doing it! Block foundation, roof trusses, metal roof, electrical, well pump and tank, etc. We are about 80% done and I can't wait show all those people that doubted us.

Building a house is easy. Step 1 decide on how many beds and baths you want and what other rooms you use Step 2 go to an online source of house plans and decide what you want your house to look like on the outside. Step 3 either find a house plan online or an architect to design your house plan. Step 4 find a contractor to work with to help you decide which pieces of the building process you can do and which are best left to the professionals. Most people are able to build the frame of the house, lay the foundation, and do the insulation. If you have experience with electrical, plumbing, or roofing then you can do those. The electrical and plumbing should be designed and installed by professionals, but you can hook up the electrical outlets, light switches, lights, and plumbing fixtures. If you want to do the digging then you will be able to do the hook ups for sewer and water, but I would recommend you have a professional build the well and layout the sewer if you are off grid. Finding inexpensive fixtures at online marketplaces with sales for new or the habitat for humanity restore store or something similar for used. Create a book of ideas of what you want your house to look and feel like. That will help with decision making of the final look of the house. Good luck and enjoy the process!

We built it ourselves from the ground to the roof and the entire interior. It was great although we were close to 50 years old then. You and sweet miah seem very much like we are. So even though it will be aggravating, gratifying, exhausting,& satisfying. You can do it. We did use trees cut to clear our home spot and hired a man to set up his sawmill on site so that helped with lumber costs and hurt feelings too. I get hurt feelings over cutting down trees.

I fill up my eyeballs with stuff about the things that are overwhelming so that they pass through my field of consciousness (damn i sound all woo woo-ey) that way eventually it becomes less overwhelming. FB groups have been a tool used for the same thing. Sometimes I engage in the conversations... mostly I just sit on the sidelines getting used to the lingo and concepts. So we remodeled our kitchen and built a dining room where the heck porch was. We did it ourselves and asked for friends to help. I know it is not the same as building a house. You have a lot of friends, ask friends for help. Find deals at stores. We did all of that for under$6000. When we got an estimate for just the kitchen and it was$14,000 and that was not including installing the cabinets but ordering them. My husband wound up looking at how to build the cabinets himself. He built them and got the doors off the cabinets he used, used paper wood.

My husband has been watching the KZbin channel Renovision. He really likes how he explains things and that he gives different options on ways to do things. We just bought about 40 acres with a rundown farmhouse that needed completely gutted. My husband has done construction jobs before and this took him by surprise with how much work it really is especially without a crew and working a full time job. It has taken a lot of readjusting of our timeline and a change in mindset for him to realize he needs help and that's okay. I think the biggest issue we are running into is that he feels he's letting me down. Not that he can't do the work but that it will now probably take an extra 2 months than he thought. A lot of prayer has gone into it. He started praying with the guys that come to help him and it has opened up so much good conversation and relationships. We are exactly where God wants us. It is personal and humbling growth in the best way. Good luck with your build and remember to keep God in the details.

You absolutely can build your own place. We had builders do most and the groundworks we were able to do ourselves. We are in Scotland so some things I could advise may be different. Couple of things 1) don't look at the whole project, break it into stages but keep that final picture in mind and where you will get to. There will be moments you need to remember that! It will be worth it in the end. If you are looking at heating - we put in ground source heating which was 400m of pipe in loops in the garden. Install was ok but we now worry if anything drives over the ground (thats a large area to lose use of). Also found it wasn't worth it. Our pumps are so power hungry we would never recommend it. Solar water panels put a huge more amount of hot water into our system. The solar water panels were commissioned on a sunny but frosty 2C (35 F) day and was still producing 67C (153F) water. The sheep can often start producing milk and still be a week away from lambing. We would look for the 'gunk' coming from the back end and the nesting instinct. Once they get that far keep an eye out. If 1 lambs and there is another close to lambing no.2 may steal the lamb and will then reject hers. That's why they find somewhere to hide if they are out the hill to lamb. In the shed we keep them together and quickly move new lamb and mum into a separate pen to bond. After 24hrs they can get to a back field if both doing ok. Good luck. The lambs are cute as buttons but don't jump in to help too quick. Nature is awesome. Exciting times ahead.

So, black absorbs light, right? Well, I'm wondering if you'd consider rethinking the black on (at least the inside of) the greenhouse.... baby plants need light more than 85 degrees especially once they've germinated. Always a pleasure to watch you Jess!

Jess, I only have a window sill to start seedlings If they lean, I rotate the trays or containers about a quarter turn every day. It keeps them straight(ish). Good luck on the learning curve for the home build. I know you guys will do an amazing job. I hope you will have some help though.

Jes, My husband and I built our house 2 years into our marriage. He was 24 and I was 21. We did as much of the work ourselves as we could - framing, roofing, trim, tile, brick, etc. It took a lot of prayer and help from knowledgeable people. But, if we could do it at a young and naive age- ya'll will be just fine!!! Praying for you!

So happy and excited for you guys on your new homestead build. Watching Miah build the tree house and inside of barn shows some mad skills. I watch a channel good simple living. A Seattle policeman and his wife move in the middle of nowhere and build themselves a home. If they can do it I know you will be extremely successful. Blessings as you move forward in your new venture. I look forward to Miah realizing his dream.

JESS, you stated seeds without taking us along, telling us what’s started, having a chat while popping them in ??? 😂 I miss those varieties going in, the reminder of how deep to sow and how long they take to be ready for going outside chats. ❤

Hi Jess my husband and I built our house 53 + years ago. Everything but the frame, masonry siding and roof. Everything else my husband did with some help from his Dad, who built his own house 50 years before that. I can still remember the first time the water ran it was sooo exciting. It is stressful but you and Miah have a strong foundation for it. Take your time and remember it’s Your house and Your schedule. Good luck and May God bless your building.❤️

My kid admitted in a recent teacher conference that she feels afraid to ask questions because she feels dumb and my heart just went out to her 💔 I said Babe, I can guarantee at least one other person in that room has the same exact question and feels the exact same way as you. Being brave enough to ask it would help so many people, and it helps the teacher know when to rephrase a concept. They don't know if you don't tell them. But I now how hard it is to take the responsibility of the criticism of being "stupid" on yourself. Kids can be especially mean. Ahhhhh SPEAK UP! Everyone learns different and at different speeds! ❤❤❤❤

If you haven't watched "Good Simple Living" on KZbin, You will be inspired by Malissa and Jeremy, who built their own home almost entirely by themselves, in the Idaho mountains. I am jealous of your screened in porch plans, but we have a porch that wraps all the way around our house and it protects our windows and doors and allows us and the dogs to walk around the house no matter the weather and see our land in all directions.
