Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

I've seen a Facebook video of a lady yelling at her horse for looking dead because he's sunbathing. She gets multiple phone calls from concerned neighbors lol. I teared up seeing the coffee house on the front page. Watching the farm grow and seeing the coffee house become a real thing that started as a dream gets me in the feels. I'm so happy for the success and triumphs even though it's not always been sunshine and roses to get there.

Enjoy the yarn that you spin early. We call it "novelty yarn" and it looks great when it gets worked up. Once you get really good at spinning, you won't be able to make that type of yarn anymore (or so they tell me...I'm not good yet, still creating novelty yarn). Have fun with it!

Darling Girl....this is right up there on my shortlist of favorite R&R vlogs ever for all the feels it brought. The front page is just the beginning of so many more...so happy for you! When you brought out the fibers and talked about crocheting I suddenly remembered how when I first discovered you early 2020 I sent you your Amazon wishlist crochet hooks never dreaming that 3 yrs later those might be the very tools you use today. And biggest chuckle was you showing the train rolling by. I have only lived in 2 houses my entire soon-to-be 62 yrs and both of those have been within 100 yards of the railroad tracks! I can tell which road miles away a train is crossing by how far away the 4 whistle blasts are. My mother told how during the Depression the coal man would shovel off coal as it passed our house for the neighborhood kids to gather to heat their homes. You just keep on making these Day in the Life vlogs. They've become my favorites. ❤

Very different and enjoyable non-farm video Jess. Congrats on the front page coverage! That is so cool! Danial was sure jazzed to see that. BTW, for anyone wondering, horses are non-ruminants but rather monogastric, meaning have only one compartment in the stomach. They don't chew cud but rather rely on a lengthy intestinal tract to break down the herbaceous things they eat with enzymes and bacteria.

But I have had to go out a prove it more times than not cus they didn't believe a horse would let a goose nap on top of him.

I had a Botson terrier/pug mix that love crochet and knitting as much as I do. whenever I sat down to work my yarn, she HAD to be up under it. It was really nice when I was doing a blanket or larger project. She was that warm pressure in my lap, napping in contentment. However, a little less charming when working on smaller projects she did not quite fit under. Then the insistent battel of what was supposed to be happening began.

Love you, Jess. So nice to have a few minutes doing regular things with you through the little black box in my phone. We moved to our first homestead at the same time you moved to S.C. Somewhere in the last year my soul pushed me to get a spinning wheel and a bunch of wool. I made a bunch of tools and brushes, spun once. And now it sits waiting for me to have systems in place (like irrigation) that will free up my time so I can fulfill sitting on the porch, spinning and watching the chickens forage. All of this to say, I can relate!

I love the train. We live one block from train tracks in a relatively small town in NC. The sound of the train is soothing to me. I can tell approximately what time it is by the train whistle. And different conductors use a specific whistle cadence. I am so pleased for all your success. I have been a subscriber for many years. Loved this video! I’ve owned alpacas for almost 20 years now and the panicked run to the pasture because you think your sunbathing alpaca is dead is some kind of rite of passage in the alpaca world. No one tells you about it yet we all have stories of the first time it happened to us! Someday I’d love to sit and spin with you. Your spin looks really nice. It’s a little over twisted in a few spots but that will even out when it is plied. Also, your fiber stash looks like mine, purple and green. If you ever get invited to the local spinners and weavers guild, go, you’ll learn a lot and I bet the women will love you! I’m heading to an annual spinning retreat next week, so relaxing and fun!

Congratulation on the article in the paper. Every little steps count. It is time to start a scrapbook with all the cuttings from the papers. How lucky you are Jess. Going anywhere with a friend it is one of the best time I remember. Unfortunately these days I am on my own shopping. Moving to the country did stop those times. My "new friends" are mostly farmers and have no time to wonder when it is shopping time. Something sometimes you have to give up. Big noisy city to peaceful countryside but I still miss my friends.

Learning to Spin! When I decided to learn, I was advised and did use a drop spindle for a bit before I started using a wheel. I had to save for a couple years to get a used spinning wheel. We had local yarn store where I could take classes. It really helped me learning how to do all the basics. A drop spindle is small portable, goes anywhere, and can be done when you only have small amounts of time. I practiced 15 minutes a day for a month then took beginner class for the spinning wheel. They got me started with mechanics and operating wheel and all during (half day) class said just keep spinning. Everyone asked about why it came so much easier to me and so I explained my prior practice. All this to offer suggestion for you and encourage you. It can be small and portable to start. I’m still very much a beginning spinner. I have had several life events that have prevented me from spending time at my wheel for a few years. I’m just now getting back into it some.

I really enjoyed following along on this day, as I do all the rest. Seeing you set up your hobby equipment always inspires me to get up and take part in my hobbies instead of increasing my screen time! I just can’t get over how gorgeous your office is. Congrats on the newspaper 🎉

I call that the "treat theory" and I get to decide what the treat is.....sometimes its a choice of which thing do I NOT want to do more and do that first so the other thing becomes the treat. I'm not always sucessful with this route, but I always try!

I have been here from almost the very beginning, I went back to watch every video you had up then and the first one was the young man using a toilet wax ring to waterproof his boots. I was there for the live when ya'll rolled over the 100K subs. I enjoy spending time with you and am really loving this more honest you! Taking us along for the day no matter what it is. You have been a blessing. The very first time I met you and Miah was the HOA and I spied you praying over a young woman in the crowd and I cried with ya'll. Be you in every way and I know that there will always be dissented voices telling you wrong things to try to bring you down but they do not represent the majority who watch! Remember satan is the thief of joy and a liar. Bless you!, Jess Thank you!!!

Hey Jess, if you were on the receiving end of your videos you might also see a lot of us cooking dinner, waiting for a friend at a doctors appointment or sitting and enjoying a cup of tea or favorite beverage! I always think of my time watching and listening as spending time with a friend! So if others share they only want the gardening videos, don’t mind them! The rest of us are just waiting to hang out! Blessings on your evening! ♥️

Beulah can only thrive with such great press. Nice cover article! And I truly love these casual, come -what- may kinds of videos. It feels like hanging out with a friend, for sure.

Oh Jess! You must listen to the tune by Calexico, Minas de Cobre. They were recording in a studio in Tucson by the train and it came by when they were working on this song, giving two perfect train whistles in the beginning. They kept it and…chef’s kiss. I know it’s distracting for you, but I love living by the train. My house is right under the landing path of our tiny local airport. I love that too. No jets, mostly propeller planes, but I love the energy.

I have two of those craft baskets in the same color in my kitchen for the things that I use commonly and don't want to go looking for in the pantry. Mine are on wheels so I can pull them around easily and they fit under the lip of my island so they aren't out in the way. I love them.

I love the reward method you mentioned. I'm in a counseling grad program and all I want to do is start my seeds and finish building my beds but I have to finish these papers first. I can't wait!

lol the train! You learn when the train schedule is and then the trains keep you on schedule 🙃 That’s how it was for me when we lived by a train. I knew if we waited we would be late for church or work.

I don’t have any links…you have to play around with the settings. For vinyl I use the permanent vinyl + setting, if you’re using sticker paper, the washi tape setting worked well for me for that.

I clearly love the garden content or I wouldn't have found you and stuck around but I also love the everyday stuff. I especially love hearing about your crafting! As someone who knits, crochets, sews, quilts and has an e-spinner by that same company I'm ALL about watching anything crafty alongside gardening and cooking! You've motivated me to pull my spinner back out! It's been a long time! Your yarn looks great!!
